NEW YORK – In late September, the American press was filled with data on women’s happiness. Marcus Buckingham, a business consultant, made the case that the data showed that women have become less happy over the past 40 years. Blogs, newsmagazines, and daytime talk shows agonized over the notion that feminism – all that freedom, all those choices – was actually making women sadder.

What if we have externalized the feminist ideal primarily as a set of accomplishments and rigors, rather than embracing it as an expansion of all kinds of freedom – which can also sometimes include freedom from eternal aspiration?

The redefinition of feminism as “always seeking more” fulfills the requirements of consumer capitalism and a post-industrial work ethic. It is not necessarily a victory for women – or men – that, 40 years on, professional women are just as exhausted as professional men traditionally have been.

Christoph Benda’s first novel has already broken new ground with its use of Google maps. Senghor on the Rocks tells the story of Austrian camera assistant arriving in the Senegalese capital of Dakar. Readers are taken on a verbal and visual journey, the location changing with the story using updated satellite view Google maps. The book (in German), was originally written from 2002 to 2005, and was later adapted for the latest geo-novel edition.

Based on his time spent in Senegal, Benda’s collaborative partner on the project, Florian Ledermann explains the project:

We wanted to add something to the story that helps readers – especially as the story is set in an unfamiliar environment – to envision the mood of the story without illustrating it.

The satellite images provided by Google Maps do not constrain the reader’s imagination but are capable of actually triggering imagination by giving a rough impression without too much detail.

Since we first announced captions in Google Video and YouTube, we've introduced multiple caption tracks, improved search functionality and even automatic translation. Each of these features has had great personal significance to me, not only because I helped to design them, but also because I'm deaf. Today, I'm in Washington, D.C. to announce what I consider the most important and exciting milestone yet: machine-generated automatic captions.

we've combined Google's automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology with the YouTube caption system to offer automatic captions, or auto-caps for short. Auto-caps use the same voice recognition algorithms in Google Voice to automatically generate captions for video.

Researchers have added new weight to theories that a prehistoric "hobbit" found by Australian and Indonesian scientists in Indonesia is an unknown human species.

Bones belonging to a mini-human and believed to be about 18,000 years old were unearthed on the Indonesian island of Flores in 2004, sparking theories about our ancient relatives.

Since then, scientists have debated whether Homo floresiensis was a descendant of a known human species suffering from some sort of genetic disease that caused them to be so small, or whether they belonged to a new species.

A new study of the bones of a female "hobbit" (several skeletons were ultimately unearthed at the site) by American scientists William Jungers and Karen Baab has given fresh impetus to the theory that floresiensis is a genuine ancient human species and not a descendant of healthy humans dwarfed by disease.

'Unfriend': dictionary's word of the year

IT IS the online version of the "cold shoulder", and a word that will cause lovers of the English language to wince. But it's a term that defines the times we live in.

The New Oxford American Dictionary , the default dictionary included on Amazon's Kindle and the Apple iPhone, has chosen the term "unfriend" as its Word of the Year for 2009.

A verb, it means to remove someone as a "friend" on a social networking site, as in: "I decided to unfriend my brother from Facebook last night after we had an argument."

"It has both currency and potential longevity," said Christine Lindberg, senior lexicographer for the Oxford University Press American dictionary programme.

"In the online social networking context, its meaning is understood, so its adoption as a modern verb form makes this an interesting choice for Word of the Year."

clipper's remarks: In the 1780s, Thomas Jefferson opined in his “Notes on Virginia” that “both heats and colds are become much more moderate within the memory even of the middle-aged,” expressing views articulated as early as 1721 by Cotton Mather: “Our cold is much moderated since the opening and clearing of our woods, and the winds do not blow roughly as in the days of our fathers, when water, cast up into the air, would commonly be turned into ice before it came to the ground.”

FEW would argue that the debate on global warming engenders a lot of emotion. What else are we to make of comments that “within the last 40 or 50 years there has been a very great observable change of climate,” that “a change in our climate ... is taking place very sensibly” and that “men are led into numberless errors by drawing general conclusions from particular facts”?

That these comments were actually tossed around back in the late 18th century by the Pennsylvania doctor Hugh Williamson, Thomas Jefferson and Noah Webster reminds us that history has a tendency to repeat itself. (One can imagine what television talk shows would have been like then. Would Jefferson have promoted “An Inconvenient Treatise” only to be acrimoniously contradicted by Webster on “Hard Quoits,” assuming either could get a word in amid the jabbering of the host?)
