Fireboats hired by Dow’s public relations agency jetted huge sprays aloft over the Hudson River as Liveris told the assembled diplomats “Lack of clean water is the single largest cause of disease in the world and more than 4,500 children die each day because of it … We are determined to win a victory over the problem of access to clean water for every person on earth … we need to bring to the fight the kinds of things companies like Dow do best.”

Stirring words. But when asked if he would clean up Bhopal, where the drinking wells of 20,000 people have been poisoned by chemicals abandoned by Dow’s subsidiary Union Carbide, causing an epidemic of cancers and hundreds of children to be born malformed and with brain damage, Liveris replied, “We don’t feel this is our responsibility”.

Burma is ruled by one of the most brutal dictatorships in the world. It ruthlessly persecutes, imprisons and tortures human rights and democracy activists. Thousands of men, women and children are used as slave labour. Out of sight in the jungles of Eastern Burma, more than 3,000 villages have been destroyed, rape is used as a weapon of war against ethnic women and children. The United Nations is convening an emergency summit of world leaders in Rome this week to address the skyrocketing world food crisis. There is a real danger that rich country leaders will push half measures and band-aid solutions – we need a huge global outcry to demand rapid, massive, coordinated action.

clipper's remarks: The UK has taken the lead in the past, but further and faster debt cancellation is urgently needed. We are calling on the Government to cancel all unpayable and unjust debts owed to it.

This must include debts that arose from government-backed commercial loans, known as export credit debts. Other rich countries, companies, and institutions like the World Bank, must also pick up the pace and drop ALL the debt.
Please contact your government and tell them to DROP THE DEBT!

Our demand is the same one that united 70,000 people in Birmingham in 1998. We call for an end to unpayable and unjust debt.

We demand:

The cancellation of the unpayable debts – over $400 billion for around 100 poor countries.
A new definition of ‘sustainable’ debts, in terms of human need, to be used as the basis for cancelling unpayable debts.
The auditing of poor country debts and the cancellation of those that have resulted from irresponsible lending.
The establishment of a fair and transparent process for working out debt disputes.
The participation in debt cancellation processes of those creditors who have been least engaged in the process so far, especially commercial creditors; this would prevent ‘vulture fund’ activity.
An end to the imposition of economic policy conditions attached to debt relief.
The creation and implementation of enforceable criteria for responsible lending.

The world's poorest countries pay over $100 million every day to the rich world. Read the basics about how this works - and why it should stop.

How big is the debt of poor countries?
The poorest 53 countries have debts totalling between 290 and 380 billion US dollars, whilst for the poorest 149 countries, it is over 2.6 trillion US dollars.

Where did the debt come from?
Much of the debt of poor countries is left over from the 1970s - and often arose through reckless or self-interested lending by the rich world.

Poor countries are paying debts to the World Bank, the IMF, other international bodies (all controlled by rich countries), to rich country governments and to companies.

There are lots of harmful, undemocratic and irrelevant conditions attached to debt cancellation - we want these strings to be cut.

How do we prevent future debt crises?
We need economic justice - covering debt, trade, aid, tax, etc - and responsible financing in the future.

A total of 25 people turned up at Birmingham's International Convention Centre in their fair trade underwear.

Campaign group Pants to Poverty said the "pantathlon" showed "the unfinished business of third world debt".

The subject had been on the agenda of the world leaders, who included Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, a decade ago.

That meeting prompted 70,000 people to join the campaign calling for millions of pounds of debts to be cleared to help those in poorer nations and they formed a chain around Birmingham.

However, campaigners have said not enough has been done since then to help people living in some of the poorest countries in the world.

Take Action this Mother's Day

Almost every minute of every day a baby is born with HIV. Almost all are born in the world’s poorest countries. And almost all are born to mothers who have no access to drugs and health care to protect their infants.

But it doesn’t have to be like this.

Write to the Chancellor, Alistair Darling, and ask him to outline how and when the Government will contribute their G8 share of the $1.5 billion and ask him to encourage other G8 countries to do the same.

Help mothers in developing countries to protect their babies this Mother’s Day.
