UK celebs charged over Aussie rat meal

Two stars of a British celebrity reality TV show filmed in Australia have been charged with animal cruelty by New South Wales police.

Celebrity chef Gino D'Acampo, who won the I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here TV contest, and soap star Stuart Manning were arrested and charged after cooking a rat and serving it with rice as a meal for fellow contestants.

D'Acampo, 33, and Manning, 30, were confronted by RSPCA officers after filming ended late last week on the TV show's set near Dungay in north-eastern NSW.

News Of The World newspaper and the BBC say that the pair were charged with animal cruelty offences by Murwillumbah police.

They have been ordered to appear in court on February 3.

If found guilty, the pair face up to three years in jail.

The ITV network, which broadcasts the reality TV show in Britain, could also face charges.

A group of 60 Girls Scouts of eastern Massachusetts will act as the jury for the case at Northeastern University Law School.

Lawyers from the Massachusetts Bar Association will sit in as judge, prosecutor and defense attorney for the trial.

The six members of the Public and Community Service Branch of the bar association will then deliberate to decide if Gold E. Locks is innocent or guilty.

The event is dubbed "Innocent or Guilty: Commonwealth vs. Gold E. Locks."

DOPEY prison guards unwittingly allowed a convicted drug dealer to grow cannabis in his cell - and even decorate one 4ft plant as a CHRISTMAS TREE.

Gold-toothed Mohamed Jalloh, 28, convinced jail staff that his super-powerful skunk crop was really tomato plants.

He grew it for at least five months while unsuspecting officers and bosses admired his green fingers. And he got so cocky he put festive decorations on one to brighten up his cell at Verne Prison in Portland, Dorset.

Eventually he was grassed up by a jealous inmate - and guards then identified the plants using Google snaps.

A source said: "You could see the plants from the grounds as his cell looks on to the education department and communal outside area. They were on show for the world to see."

Jalloh, of Brent, North London, is serving eight years for supplying Class A drugs. An inquiry is underway at the Category C prison.

Lego gun sighting leads to police takedown

A Toronto designer became a participant in a real-life Flashpoint-style event when police tactical officers showed up at his workplace over a firearms call that involved a Lego gun.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Bell -- a partner with the digital design firm Teehan+Lax, located at 460 Richmond St. W. -- was assembling a replica handgun made out of Lego that had arrived.

"It arrived yesterday and at the end of the day, I decided to put it together. I literally assembled it, handed it to a co-worker (who promptly broke it) and then put it back in the box," Bell wrote in a posting on his personal blog.

Across the street, Michael Dent was working in his third-floor loft. He saw what he thought was someone assembling a firearm, so he took some photos and called the police.

"The SWAT arrived shortly thereafter."

"I don't really like guns right beside me -- and then it turned out to be Lego," Dent chuckled.

DUNEDIN — Joshua Harvey had just finished breakfast two weeks ago and stepped into the parking lot when he noticed a strange sign on the bar next door.

"Stop, Absolutely No Color's," it read, from the window of the Inn Lounge on the Dunedin Causeway. "You will not be served."

I just looked at it," he said. "I couldn't believe it."

Harvey, who is black, said the sign seemed like a call for segregation, using a misspelling of "colored" as a derogatory warning against nonwhites.

But bar owner Manny Kusturiss said it was aimed at a different group: gang members flashing their club emblems, or "colors," before a brawl.

"It's not for 'colored' people," Kusturiss said. "I had a problem with some bikers, and I put it up to nip it in the bud."

"There's no racial problem around here. But there's sometimes a biker problem."

World's Smallest Orchid Discovered (By Accident)

The world's smallest known orchid (pictured)—just over 2 millimeters (0.08 inch) across and nearly see-through—has been discovered nestled in the roots of another flower in Ecuador, scientists announced this week.

Lou Jost, an ecologist with the EcoMinga plant-conservation foundation, has studied the plants of the South American country's mountainous forests for 15 years.

Earlier this year he'd collected an orchid of a larger species to study in his greenhouse. "Several months later I saw this tiny plant," he said.

Ecuador's mountains are havens of biodiversity, where plants on one mountain may be entirely different from those on a neighboring peak.

In the region where the tiny orchid was found, Jost also recently discovered 28 new orchids in the Teagueia genus, a group previously thought to contain only 6 species. Ecuador as a whole is home to 4,000 known orchid species—a thousand of them discovered in the past 12 years alone.

Microsoft to plug critical IE hole targeted by exploit code

Microsoft said on Thursday that it will offer six updates for 12 vulnerabilities next week including a critical hole in Internet Explorer that affects Windows 7 and other current versions of the operating system for which exploit code has been released.

Late last month, Microsoft said it was investigating an IE vulnerability after someone released proof-of-concept code affecting IE 6 and IE 7 that could be used to take control of computers.

Microsoft described the problem in an advisory issued November 23: "The vulnerability exists as an invalid pointer reference of Internet Explorer. It is possible under certain conditions for a CSS/Style object to be accessed after the object is deleted. In a specially-crafted attack, Internet Explorer attempting to access a freed object can lead to running attacker-supplied code."

Of the six updates Microsoft will release on Patch Tuesday, three of them are critical

Scary ... tiger sprints head on towards cameraman

A FEARSOME tiger rampages head on towards a photographer — and he lived to tell the tale.

The terrifying beast bore down on British snapper Roger Hooper as he captured this grrr-eat picture.

It was just 20 metres from brave Roger when he photographed the big cat staring him down as it hurtled towards him.

But he says he did not flinch as he had come up with a cunning plan to draw the tiger away from him at the last second with the help of a big cat trainer.

Roger, 58, from London, said: "We came up with the idea of getting the trainer to dangle a big piece of meat in front of the tiger and then sprint towards me.

"Then the trainer would run passed me and I had to hope the tiger would keep following him and not come for me instead.

Thankfully the bait tempted him and I got the photo I wanted."

Roger took the remarkable snap in a wildlife reserve in Canada.
