The Ten Habits of Emotionally Intelligent
    People
Copyright 1999 Steve Hein, The EQ Institute
    - May be copied for educational uses.

High EQ people:

1. Label their feelings, rather than labeling people or situations.

"I feel impatient." vs "This is ridiculous."

"I feel hurt and bitter". vs. "You are an insensitive
          jerk."

"I feel afraid." vs. "You are driving like a idiot."

2. Distinguish between thoughts and feelings.

Thoughts: I feel like...& I feel as if.... & I feel that

Feelings: I feel: (feeling word)

3. Take responsibility for their feelings.

"I feel jealous." vs. "You are making me jealous."

4. Use their feelings to help them make decisions.

"How will I feel if I do this?" "How will I feel if I
        don't"

5. Show respect for other people's feelings.

They ask "How will you feel if I do this?" "How will
        you feel if I don't."

6. Feel energized, not angry.

They use what others call "anger" to help them feel energized
        to take productive action.

7. Validate other people's feelings.

They show empathy, understanding, and acceptance of other people's feelings.

8. Practice getting a positive value from their negative emotions.

They ask themselves: "How do I feel?" and "What would
        help me feel better?"

They ask others "How do you feel?" and "What would help
          you feel better?"

9. Don't advise, command, control, criticize, judge or lecture to others.

They realize it doesn't feel good to be on the receiving end of such
        behavior, so they avoid it.

10. Avoid people who invalidate them, or don't respect their feelings.

As much as possible, they choose to associate only with other people
        with high EQ.

Head for the kitchen and enjoy one or two of these 10 foods. They relax tense muscles, quiet buzzing minds, and/or get calming, sleep-inducing hormones - serotonin and melatonin - flowing. Yawning yet?

Bananas. They're practically a sleeping pill in a peel. In addition to a bit of soothing melatonin and serotonin, bananas contain magnesium, a muscle relaxant.

Chamomile tea. The reason chamomile is such a staple of bedtime tea blends is its mild sedating effect - it's the perfect natural antidote for restless minds/bodies.

Warm milk. It's not a myth. Milk has some tryptophan - an amino acid that has a sedative - like effect - and calcium, which helps the brain use tryptophan. Plus there's the psychological throw-back to infancy, when a warm bottle meant "relax, everything's fine."

Honey. Drizzle a little in your warm milk or herb tea. Lots of sugar is stimulating, but a little glucose tells your brain to turn off orexin, a recently discovered neurotransmitter that's linked to alertness.

Potatoes. A small baked spud won't overwhelm your GI tract, and it clears away acids that can interfere with yawn-inducing tryptophan. To up the soothing effects, mash it with warm milk.

Oatmeal. Oats are a rich source of sleep - inviting melatonin, and a small bowl of warm cereal with a splash of maple syrup is cozy - plus if you've got the munchies, it's filling too.

Almonds. A handful of these heart-healthy nuts can be snooze-inducing, as they contain both tryptophan and a nice dose of muscle-relaxing magnesium.

Flaxseeds. When life goes awry and feeling down is keeping you up, try sprinkling 2 tablespoons of these healthy little seeds on your bedtime oatmeal. They're rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a natural mood lifter.

Whole-wheat bread. A slice of toast with your tea and honey will release insulin, which helps tryptophan get to your brain, where it's converted to serotonin and quietly murmurs "time to sleep."

Turkey.

Tags: sleep, diet, food, science

<clipSource>http://food.yahoo.com/blog/beautyeats/746/top-10-foods-for-a-good-night-s-sleep/print</clipSource>

PIMPIN OUR DAUGHTERS

clipped by: Eaglewings
clipper's remarks: In the words of Hillary Clinton ' It takes a village' why does it take scientific studies and polls to make us aware of what is going on in our own families and culture? I mean does it really require society to tell us what is wrong with our families? DADS must someone else tell you what is appropriate behavior for your sons and daughters?

As long as there is pop culture and idols are made of television stars our young people will be tempted to look like what they see on TV and in the movies. Perhaps a return to decency and a little old fashion modesty is in order?

Clip Source: www.townhall.com

The American Psychological Association has discovered that too early sexualization of children, particularly girls, is damaging. How about that? Because I have well-developed views on this subject, I almost didn't read the long article about it in the Health section of The Washington Post this week. But I'm glad I did because just when you think you're up to date on cultural decline, you are surprised.

Here is reporter Stacy Weiner on the state of preteen fashion: "Ten-year-old girls can slide their low cut jeans over 'eye-candy' panties. French maid costumes, garter belt included, are available in preteen sizes. . . . And it's not unusual for girls under 12 to sing, 'Don't cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me?'" As Nora Ephron memorably put it in another context, "No matter how cynical I get, I just can't keep up."

The Post article and the APA report focus on the increasing rates of eating disorders, depression and low self-esteem among younger and younger girls. Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., for example, is now seeing patients as young as 6 with eating disorders. Girls are worrying about their weight and expressing dissatisfaction with their bodies at younger ages.

Tags: sex, modesty, pop culture, attire, feminism, adolesence, puberty

<clipSource>http://www.townhall.com/columnists/MonaCharen/2007/02/23/sexualizing_girls</clipSource>

The Great Global Warming Swindle

clipped by: Eaglewings

Clip Source: www.foxnews.com

Last week, the UK’s Channel 4 premiered a 75-minute film entitled, “The Great Global Warming Swindle.” Through interviews with prize-winning climate experts and others, this masterful documentary explains the origins of global warming alarmism; debunks claims of man-made global climate change; exposes the motivations of organizations, scientists and activists sounding the alarm; and explains why it’s been extremely difficult, if not downright dangerous, for climate scientists to question global warming orthodoxy publicly.

The entire film, which is creating quite a stir among tens of thousands of web viewers, can be viewed online at http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-4520665474899458831.

Tags: global warming, environment, al gore

<clipSource>http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,258993,00.html</clipSource>

The 7 habits of highly effective propagandists

clipped by: Aribeth
clipper's remarks: citing a qualified source is a good way to emphasize a legitimate idea. But you should consider whether or not the source being cited is really qualified to make judgments about a particular issue.

5. PLAIN FOLKS

The “Plain Folks” technique is at work whenever a speaker promotes the idea that he or she is “of the people,” just an Average Joe despite the fact that he or she may go home to a mansion at the end of the day.

6. CARD STACKING

“Stacking the deck” is a gimmick used by magicians where a deck of cards appears to be randomly shuffled but is in fact arranged in a specific way. The IPA borrowed the term to describe a technique where only one side of a topic is favored, or another side is ignored or played down.

7. BANDWAGON

The idea behind the Bandwagon technique is that, since everyone else is doing it, so too should you.

Clip Source: www.ironicsans.com

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Propagandists

1. GLITTERING GENERALITIES

The IPA used this term to describe virtuous words that mean different things to different people, but are used in such a general way that you can project your own meaning into the speaker’s words. So when people talk about freedom, strength, Democracy, or patriotism, you are likely to assume they think of those words the same way you do.

2. NAME CALLING

“Name calling” is a technique where someone uses words to link a person or proposal to a negative or emotionally charged symbol. The idea is to get you to reject the person due to the association with the symbol rather than actual evidence, which may or may not be there.

3. Along with the concrete elements that demand belief (that fire burns and that it's not wise to walk off cliffs, for example) there exists an apparent necessity for a belief in "the rock higher than I" - a belief in a superior entity that can inspire awe and gratitude, that can be turned to in hard times, that can act as witness to injustice and dispenser of mercy.

In fact, the apocalyptic is the major fulcrum of environmentalism, the axis around which everything else turns. It's environmentalism's major element of concern, its chief attraction, and the center of discussion and speculation, in much the same way that some Protestant variants of Christianity are obsessed above all with sin. So crucial is the apocalypse to environmentalism that there has been a whole string of them, one after the other, covering every last aspect of the natural world. If one don't git ya, the next one will.

The lessons of previous environmental panics have been carefully applied to global warming No other environmentalist program has been prepared with such detail, purpose, and conviction. A skilled cadre of scientists, activists, and publicists exist who have devoted entire careers to nothing else. A vast literature has appeared analyzing not climate as a whole, not the interactions of the entire system, but solely and uniquely global warming. In many ways, warming has become both more and less than an ideology: it has become an industry, one that with such financial elements as carbon offsets can easily support itself.

Tags: global warming, environment, environmentalism, darwinism, evolution, religion, atheism

<clipSource>http://www.americanthinker.com/2007/02/a_necessary_apocalypse.html</clipSource>

ACLU trying to control public prayer

clipped by: Eaglewings
clipper's remarks: I thought the ACLU sought to protect people from the overreaching government and discrimination against religion, race, or creed.

Researchers have believed for years that it rested on Mount Ararat in eastern Turkey.

But after studying the biblical account, Dr. Robert Cornuke, the team's leader, concluded that the ark wouldn't be located in Turkey. The reason, he says, is that in biblical times, Ararat was situated in the region that is northern Iran today.

So the men travelled there.

Arch Bonnema, a Dallas businessman on the Iran expedition, said, "We had archaeologists, we had geologists, we had scientists, we had biblical historians..."

After a seven-hour climb to over 13,000 feet above sea level, they found a 400-foot-long object that clearly resembles a ship; one similar in size and scale to the biblical account.
