Like a week ago some other library returned this book that they'd borrowed. We have a copy of it, and not too many libraries do, so apparently people request it pretty regularly. One of my coworkers took a look at it and all of us read it, shocked. It's a kids book that would never, never, never get published these days. I love gender roles. I really do. But I just know that this would be like, a lawsuit on every page.

It is very much out of print, but if you want your own copy, you can purchase a used copy on Amazon for $300.

Anyhow, I'm posting the whole thing. Fair use?

The below video is a bit graphic. In fact you may need to verify your age by signing into a YouTube account in order to see it. The video shows the virtual birth of two HUD controled babies in Second Life. Yes many women want to go through a virtual birthing process for a fee. The video is pretty amazing though (disregard the German music of course). But it shows a women avatar with a big belly on the birthing bed going through labor pain animations. It is kind of shocking when the babies head pokes out. It is the birth of twins so it happens twice. If you skip or watch to the end of the movie you can see the two proud parents caring for virtual babies and holding their babies as they cry.

This image featuring Leonardo’s “Mona Lisa” with Vincent Van Gogh’s “Starry Night” is shown at its peak. These images drawn in the dust are obviously quite impermanent. One of the cool things about them is how they change over time. More dust accumulates as the car is driven down the road.

Saw Uncle Albert on the cover of a magazine and thought he might appreciate the relativity of dirty car art…

A friend confided to me that this is his least favorite of my dust drawings to date. For a cartoony thing, there’s a lot of unhappiness, here. This is one of the very first dust drawings where I explored the use of a fan brush to get intermediate tones. Mostly finger and fingernail for the linework. I’d better say right here that my lovely wife, Robin, is not a nag. Never. Really.

So we can speak of individual intelligence and collective intelligence. We can further distinguish different kinds of collective intelligence -- group intelligence, organizational intelligence, community intelligence, societal intelligence, and species intelligence, to name a few.

I often suggest to people that they recall meetings, relationships, organizations and crowds

and consider whether those groups of people were more or less intelligent than the individual people who made them up.

And sometimes quite ordinary people come up with brilliant solutions when they work together well.

Faulty hard drive - Witness recall is notoriously inaccurate. When asked to describe something they just saw, people frequently overlook critically important details, get existing details wrong, and add details that weren’t present at all.

Low RAM - You can only load and process so much complexity in your mind at once.

Slow CPU - Let’s just say you’re not the sharpest tool in the shed.

Infinite loops - Once a pattern of thought and behavior has become conditioned, it can be very difficult to reprogram. This causes bad habits, addictions, and Republicans.

Lack of error correction - Once errors get into the system, they tend to stick around for a while. One bad decision left uncorrected will soon see more errors piled on top of it.

Poor networking capabilities - Transferring data between two human minds is slow, tedious, and error-prone, and the protocols are beyond confusing. It’s a safe bet that Microsoft is involved.

Some moms say the health care giant has caused them real pain for running a tone-deaf ad and related content on its Motrin web site that appeared to poke fun at carrying babies in slings and pouches. The spot called this a fashion that mimics a bonding experience, but that using such devices actually makes those moms cry more than others who don’t carry their little ones around that way.

And so over the weekend, a growing number of mommy bloggers and other outraged individuals filled up dozens of pages of angry reactions on MotrinMoms, a new Twitter page created especially for this episode. J&J’s McNeil Consumer Healthcare has since taken down the page, but the damage is done. Some are calling for a boycott (check out this new YouTube video).

China to classify internet addiction as an official disorder

China has become the first country to classify internet addiction as a clinical disorder as growing numbers of people spend hours online every day.

Doctors in Beijing have released a diagnostic definition of the addiction amid increasing concern over psychological problems said to result from overuse of the internet.

According to the definition, based on a study of more than 1,300 problematic users, symptoms of the addiction include yearning to get back online, mental or physical distress, irritation and difficulty concentrating or sleeping.

It classifies addicts as those who spend at least six hours online a day and have displayed at least one symptom on the last three months.

'Eighty per cent of addicts can be cured with treatment, which usually lasts about three months.'

The condition is often a symptom of deeper psychological problems, according to Dr Tao, and all child addicts have behavioural problems, which are then made worse by their addiction.

New Study: Travel is no safer now than in the time of the Tudors

Travel is no safer today than it was 500 years ago, a study has found.

Despite centuries of advances the proportion killed on road and rail in the 21st century is almost the same as those who died on the move in Tudor and Stuart times.

In the past, travellers may have got around at far slower speeds, but poorer health, unsafe roads and shoddy carts meant life was fraught with danger.

Falling in ditches, being hit by a horse and accidents involving carts were the biggest transport-related killers in the past.

Researchers from the University of the West of England examined coroners' records from Sussex between 1485 and 1688 when 30 per cent of those who died as a result of injury were involved in an accident while travelling on land.

But figures from the World Health Organisation show that a quarter of injury deaths in 2000 were from road crashes.

study found 413 of around 1,000 adult inquests involved unintentional injuries, and 124 of these were from land travel.

Pete Quily has put together a case study on the search and social results of the Barack Obama and John McCain online presence among Google, Google News, Image and Video Search, Technorati, Wordpress and Yahoo along with subscriber numbers from Youtube, Flickr, Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and Friend Feed.

Key findings include :

Obama’s site had over 1 million pages indexed in Google, 5828% more than McCain

Obama’s site had 25% more pages linking to it than McCain’s

McCain has 173% more mentions on Google News

Obama has 2254% more Twitter Followers

The numbers are pretty interesting and make a good case for the importance of social media marketing not only for Presidential Candidates, but also for business online presence and social media management.
