Warning sounded on web's future

The internet needs a way to help people separate rumour from real science, says the creator of the World Wide Web.

he was increasingly worried about the way the web has been used to spread disinformation.

Sir Tim told BBC News that there needed to be new systems that would give websites a label for trustworthiness once they had been proved reliable sources.

I'd be interested in different organisations labelling websites in different ways".

Sir Tim spoke to the BBC to publicise the launch of his World Wide Web Foundation which aims to improve the web's accessibility.

Alongside this role it will aim to make it easier for people to get online.

The Web Foundation will also explore ways to make the web more mobile-phone friendly.

will also look at how the benefits of the web can be taken to those who cannot read or write.

will also look at concerns that the web has become less democratic, and its use influenced too much by large corporations and vested interests.

"A Declaration of the Independence of Cyberspace" was an influential early paper on the applicability (or lack thereof) of government on the rapidly-growing internet. It was written by John Perry Barlow, a founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and published online February 8, 1996 from Davos, Switzerland.

The Declaration sets out, in sixteen short paragraphs, a rebuttal to government of the Internet by any outside force, specifically the United States. It states that the United States did not have the consent of the governed to apply laws to the Internet, and that the Internet was outside any country's borders. Instead, the Internet was developing its own social contracts to determine how to handle its problems, based on the golden rule. It does this in language evocative of the United States Declaration of Independence

Normally, I wouldn't click through, but the name U-Man grabbed my attention since I happen to know it's a scientology affiliated organization "selling their Tech" in management circles.

Are they're trying to "get some raw meat into the shop"?

And it just so happens I'm looking for work right now. What do you think, should I apply? Should I mention that I graduated doing thesis on Scientology?
Sure they must be interested ... ;D

The important thing to remember is that the sharing of ideas is quick, is a low-barrier of entry for other collaborators, and is easy to share.

Trust other people

Pretty soon you’ll have people questioning every aspect of your idea. This is a necessary and healthy aspect of collaboration

Vannevar Bush's 1945 article, "As We May Think," has been much celebrated as a central inspiration for the development of hypertext and the World Wide Web. Less attention, however, has been paid to Bush's motivation for imagining a new generation of information technologies; it was his hope that more powerful tools, by automating the routine aspects of information processing, would leave researchers and other professionals more time for creative thought. But now, more than sixty years later, it seems clear that the opposite has happened, that the use of the new technologies has contributed to an accelerated mode of working and living that leaves us less to think, not more. In this talk I will explore how this state of affairs has come about and what we can do about it.

There is a fascinating review in Nature Reviews Neuroscience this month about the cognitive science of magic tricks

The article attempts to list and describe in neuroscientific terms the techniques that magicians use to trick their audiences. The authors break down these into "visual illusions (after-images), optical illusions ('smoke and mirrors'), cognitive illusions (inattentional blindness), special effects (explosions, fake gunshots, et cetera), and secret devices and mechanical artifacts (gimmicks)." The use of visual illusions to study perception is certainly nothing new, but the emphasis on cognitive illusions -- illusions that trick higher order perceptions like attention and judgment -- is novel.
