was an influential early paper on the applicability (or lack thereof) of government on the rapidly-growing internet. It was written by John Perry Barlow, a founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, and published online February 8, 1996 from Davos, Switzerland.

The Declaration sets out, in sixteen short paragraphs, a rebuttal to government of the Internet by any outside force, specifically the United States. It states that the United States did not have the consent of the governed to apply laws to the Internet, and that the Internet was outside any country's borders. Instead, the Internet was developing its own social contracts to determine how to handle its problems, based on the golden rule. It does this in language evocative of the United States Declaration of Independence

Tags: barlow, cyberspace, history, future, literature, internet, web, freedom, eff, declaration

<clipSource>http://homes.eff.org/~barlow/Declaration-Final.html</clipSource>

Scientology recruiting via facebook?

clipped by: Djiezes
clipper's remarks: I was playing poker on facebook, & suddenly realized the advertisement on the left pointed to a vacancy for the company U-Man.

Normally, I wouldn't click through, but the name U-Man grabbed my attention since I happen to know it's a scientology affiliated organization "selling their Tech" in management circles.

Are they're trying to "get some raw meat into the shop"?

And it just so happens I'm looking for work right now. In fact, it’s contagious. When creative people start putting their heads together, some amazing things happen. It’s a rare occasion when an incredible idea is solely created by one person.

99% of the time the problem isn’t someone stealing your idea, it’s you not actually doing it. So what better way to put an idea into motion than having more people help?

Instead of using traditional methods like emailing ideas back and forth, try using one of the many online collaboration apps

The important thing to remember is that the sharing of ideas is quick, is a low-barrier of entry for other collaborators, and is easy to share.

Realize you can’t do everything on your own

Allow for the free exchange of ideas

Trust other people

Pretty soon you’ll have people questioning every aspect of your idea. Less attention, however, has been paid to Bush's motivation for imagining a new generation of information technologies; it was his hope that more powerful tools, by automating the routine aspects of information processing, would leave researchers and other professionals more time for creative thought. But now, more than sixty years later, it seems clear that the opposite has happened, that the use of the new technologies has contributed to an accelerated mode of working and living that leaves us less to think, not more. In this talk I will explore how this state of affairs has come about and what we can do about it.

Tags: david levy, levy, vannevar bush, thinking, creativity, knowledge, technology, science, video, google

<clipSource>http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHGcvj3JiGA</clipSource>

Computing Machinery and Intelligence (by Alan Turing, 1950)

clipped by: Djiezes
clipper's remarks: Full Text @ Source

Clip Source: loebner.net

COMPUTING MACHINERY AND INTELLIGENCE

The authors break down these into "visual illusions (after-images), optical illusions ('smoke and mirrors'), cognitive illusions (inattentional blindness), special effects (explosions, fake gunshots, et cetera), and secret devices and mechanical artifacts (gimmicks)." The use of visual illusions to study perception is certainly nothing new, but the emphasis on cognitive illusions -- illusions that trick higher order perceptions like attention and judgment -- is novel.

Clip Source: www.nature.com

Nature Reviews Neuroscience

Attention and awareness in stage magic: turning tricks into research

Box 1 | Pickpockets pick your brain
