Man Accused of Hiding Pot in Babies' Diapers

Associated Press: A Delaware man was accused of giving new meaning to the phrase "dirty diapers." New Castle County police said a 26-year-old man was smoking pot and planning to sell it when probation officers stopped by his house for a routine check. The man tried to hide the marijuana inside diapers that were intended for two infants inside his home.

Police found 45 grams of the drug in one diaper and 34 grams inside another. Police also found prescription pills and drug paraphernalia.

The man was charged with possession with the intent to deliver marijuana and other drug offenses. He's also charged with two counts of unlawful dealing with a child.

The man's brother and another man face the same charges.

clipper's remarks: After some nasty experiences with sucralose/Splenda, including severe migraines and nausea, I have done my best to avoid it like the plague (I don't even gargle with it--Listerine lists it as an ingredient in their flavored mouthwashes). I don't even chew gum with sucralose.

I don't feed it to my kids or my friends, either. The only "diet" or "fat-free" drink I offer in my home is bottled water. I avoid food that says "low fat" or "fat free" unless I can tell, by reading the ingredients that they do not include "sucralose" as an ingredient.

I'm thinking about getting my hands on some leaves from a Stevia plant to grow my own non-fat sugar substitute, produced with love from Mother Nature.

New Study of Splenda Reveals Shocking Information About Potential Harmful Effects

James Turner, the chairman of the national consumer education group Citizens for Health, has expressed shock and outrage after reading a new report from scientists outlining the dangers of the artificial sweetener Splenda (sucralose).

In animals examined for the study, Splenda reduced the amount of good bacteria in the intestines by 50 percent, increased the pH level in the intestines, contributed to increases in body weight and affected P-glycoprotein (P-gp) levels in such a way that crucial health-related drugs could be rejected.

According to Turner, "The report makes it clear that the artificial sweetener Splenda and its key component sucralose pose a threat to the people who consume the product. Hundreds of consumers have complained to us about side effects from using Splenda and this study ... confirms that the chemicals in the little yellow package should carry a big red warning label."

Pentagon reports U.S. troop obesity doubles since 2003

WASHINGTON — The number of troops diagnosed as overweight or obese has more than doubled since the start of the Iraq war, yet another example of stress and strains of continuing combat deployments, according to a recent Pentagon study.

There may be even more overweight troops than the report shows, Kilpatrick said, because the study includes only servicemembers diagnosed as overweight during a visit with a doctor. The actual percentage of troops who are found to be overweight during fitness trials could be higher, he said.

The weight-gain trend is among many strains shown within the military after six years of war and back-to-back deployments. They include steadily rising suicides and divorce rates among soldiers and Marines and increased prescription drug use in the Army.

"Overweight/obesity is a significant military medical concern because it is associated with decreased military operational effectiveness," the study says.

clipper's remarks: I ceased being a huge fan of OLTL a few years back, but I still tune in every couple of weeks to check in on the old-timers who've been on the show (off/on) since I was a child. So it's sad to hear that two of my favorite soap stars have passed away.

On a trivia note, Phil Carey (Asa on OLTL) played a gay man on an episode of "All In The Family" back in the day, a far cry from the burly oil-man he played on OLTL.

Two Real Life Deaths Hit One Life To Live

A double tragedy has hit ABC's long running soap One Life to Live.

On January 31st, the show lost actor Clint Ritchie, who played the role of Clint Buchanan for twenty years on the show. Ritchie last appeared as a Buchanan in 2004.

He was 70-years old and died in California after a brief illness.

And, then, just this past Friday, OLTL lost another cast member, Phil Carey, who died from lung cancer-related complications.

Carey was 83-years old.

He played the role of Asa Buchanan and was Clint's on-screen father.

Sad, sad.

Stormy Weather Ahead For David Vitter (R-LA)?

Last week, when we first heard that Baton Rouge porn star Stormy Daniels was going to tackle Louisiana obstructionist Senator David "Diapers" Vitter, we thought it was one big joke.

Then the plot thickened as it started to appear that Republicans even further to the right than Vitter -- if that's possible -- were looking to take him on in Louisiana's newly modernized primary next year.

Suspicion for recruiting Daniels fell on Family Research Council head Tony Perkins, a former Louisiana senatorial candidate who thinks Vitter's serial sex scandals make him unfit to serve in the Senate.

Now that Daniels is doing interviews, however (above on CNN) with Rick Sanchez and here with Max Blumenthal, it's becoming apparent that she's one smart cookie with huge charisma and a far more sensible outlook than Vitter.

Get Married, Live Longer? It's a Myth

Here's another myth about getting married that just won't die. Recently, the Washington Post teased its Valentine's Day story with this online headline: "Want to live longer? Try marriage."
Well, that's not exactly true. In fact, there is some evidence that people who stay single live as long as anyone, and longer than many. Let me explain.

The money quote in the Post piece came from a research brief from RAND: "Numerous studies covering 140 years have shown that married persons tend to live longer than their unmarried counterparts."

A book often cited by the Marriage Mafia (Waite and Gallagher's The Case for Marriage) claims that getting married "can literally save your life." In Chapter 2 of Singled Out, I scrutinized each of the studies cited in supposed support of that claim. Here I'll just briefly review some of the tricks the authors used to make the results of getting married look better than they really were.

Michael Phelps' Bong Buddies Busted

A Columbia, South Carolina, TV station reports that the Richland County Sheriff's Department has arrested eight people on marijuana charges in connection with the November party where Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was photographed taking a bong hit. After serving a search warrant on the house where the party was held, says WIS-TV, the department charged seven people with marijuana possession and one with distribution. They also confiscated the world-famous bong, whose owner reportedly was trying to sell it on eBay for $100,000. Phelps himself has not been charged, but Sheriff Leon Lott has photographic evidence linking him to the house, plus the gold medalist's public admission of "regrettable behavior."

Norm Kent, an attorney who serves on NORML's board of directors, explains why the case against Phelps is not the slam dunk you might think it is.

My concern is the push to force vaccinate for a non-communicable disease or rather for a disease that is not transmitted via casual contact (like measles or even the common cold).

Yet Merck has been trying (and has been successful in some states) in making this vaccine mandatory for our daughters to attend school, despite the risks that are still not completely known.

New Worries About Gardasil Safety

Gabby Swank was a straight-A student and cheerleader.

But that was before she became very ill following the standard dose of three Gardasil vaccinations, Attkisson reports.

You know the commercial. It showed teenage girls saying "I want to be one less" who gets the HPV virus, which is linked to cervical cancer.

"It was like a big hype among my friends, because we're like, 'we're gonna get it' because we felt almost pressured by the commercials," Gabby said.

Gabby got sicker after each shot, progressing to seizures, strokes and heart problems. It was her neurologist who suspected Gardasil was to blame.

"I think there are too many people having serious long-term side-effects," said neurologist Dr. Dwight Lindholm.

Last fall, the government and vaccine maker Merck concluded there's no link between Gardasil and serious adverse events like Gabby's. But a new analysis calls that finding into question.
