Deadly Disclosure

Jamar Pinkney, Jr., 15 years old, went to his mother with remorse and confessed he'd had improper sexual contact with his three-year old half sister. The mother told her son she would get him the help he needed. Later that afternoon, she called Jamar’s father (her ex-husband) to discuss how to get the boy help. Within the hour, Jamar Pinkney, Sr., showed up in a fit of rage. From his hip pocket he pulled out a pistol and began beating his son with the butt.

Jamar Jr. begged for mercy: "No Daddy, please, no!" before Pinkney shot him point-blank, execution-style, in the head.

When we live in a society where murder is justifiable, excusable or even understandable, we will all be at risk: We can shoot each other with impunity, with no need for laws or courts.

Who Really Cares About Missing Persons?

Everyone reads the headlines when a body is recovered or remains are found. Like rubber necks at an accident scene, we want to know what happened and why in all the grisly details. The media covers the scene, hovering around like bees to honey trying to get the inside scoop and be the first to report along with pictures and video. A body is brought forth, identified and justice is served. As if reality was that simple!

Laws are being presented to Congress that will insure that missing persons cases will be handled in a more uniform manner. By supporting the passage of The Help Find The Missing Act (HR3695 Billy's Law) we are showing our support for the families of missing loved ones. We are also giving a name to the thousands of unidentified remains that are housed all over the country and reconnecting them with their families.

"Every missing person is somebody's child."

Self-Worth; Fight For It, Damn It!

Why do so many women feel that they are not worthy? How did they lose their self-worth? Is it because of the way the world has portrayed a perfect women "today"? Is it because someone took it from them? Is that the void some fill by over eating? Did their partner breach a trust? Did their partner demean them with insults about how they look? Did their partner admire other women? Did they grow up being ridiculed by a family member? Have they been suffering from a controlling illness? Were they bullied and criticized through their school years? Were they sexually abused as a child? Were they laughed at in a moment of vulnerability? Were they ever raped or abused?

You must reconstruct your thought patterns to think WIN, not to lose. Immediately remove the words, "give up" from your vocabulary and replace them with "NEVER GIVE UP!" You must make a new commitment to yourself, the only one that you can reach out and touch!

Crime Victims deal with the aftermath three hundred and sixty-five days a year, seven days a week. Providing friendship and hope for just one day is a day less of painful thought and memory in the mind of a crime victim survivor.

Laughter as Ward Foley author of "Thank My Lucky Scars" and Why God Did Not Make Me a Woman Because I have Enough Problems" will tell you humor is the best medicine. Use humor (preferably not about the event.) Try to lighten up if you can. And whatever you do if you cannot say something nice then zipper up your lip and keep it to yourself.

Society provides wellness and support for those whom are survivors of various types of illiness, but what about crime survivors?

Searching Out Solutions For Victims Of Crime

On July 12, 1979, Vicki was walking home after her brother’s little league game in the tiny town of Andover, IL. It was then Evil crossed Vicki’s path - his name was Scott Darnell. He was someone she knew, he visited his grandparent’s often, he’d been to Vicki’s house, and Vicki knew he had a crush on her older sister. Darnell led Vicki into a desolate cornfield, where, he had dug her grave three or four days earlier.

A psychiatrist would testify a year later that Darnell was “a homicide waiting to happen.” The system knew Darnell dreamed of raping and murdering little girls. And yet they released him into a community who had no knowledge what he was or what he had done or dreamed of doing. They were not allowed to protect their little girls from this monster.

Dora keep that light shining your light has strengthened my faith and countless others.

"Thank My Lucky Scars"

About a year ago I was on Facebook and one of those instant messages came up on the bottom of my screen. Rarely do I pay attention, for some unknown reason I hit the response button and typed "hello." The person at the other end of cyberspace was a man whom unknown to me at the time, literally, across the country, makes the journey with those in the final hours of their lives. He had a difficult time typing and asked if I would be alright with calling so we could talk on the phone. His voice sounded like a cross between singer Kris Kristofferson and Pastor Rick Warren, with the ease and wisdom that comes with being wiser beyond ones years. We laughed and talked for hours as though we were long lost friends.

Ward Foley is a blessing to so many-I am humbled to call him my friend!

Behind Bars the Drama Of Drew Peterson Continues...

Illinois "Hearsay Law" will apparently be tested at the mini-trial allowing those with whom Stacy Peterson allegedly spoke with about how Kathleen was killed before she mysteriously vanished back in October of 2007. According to the tribune "Before hearsay comments can be admitted, Will County Judge Steven White will rule on whether the preponderance of evidence shows that Peterson killed ex-wife Kathleen Savio in 2004 and whether the hearsay statements are reliable."

Peterson, has claimed since the begining that Stacy Peterson decided to ran away with some mystery man who no doubt lives in a third world country.

Knowing What To Say

Although many of us do not know the best thing to say when someone dies, there are things that we can do to help our friends and loved ones during their grieving period. Here are some other things that you can do:

Remember that there is no right way to grieve and mourn. Be very careful not to impose your ideas, beliefs and expectations on someone else, no matter how much you think it might help. Instead, be willing to listen with an empathetic ear, as this will surely be a source of comfort.

Overcoming Fear

One common denominator for all victims of violent crime is the acrid taste of fear that is left behind. We victims and former victims struggle with fears that it might happen again, that we don’t have the strength to carry on with normal living, and that in some way we are responsible for the trauma.

We can try to deny fear and dismiss it. It doesn’t work for any length of time, no matter how many times we tell ourselves that we shouldn’t be afraid.

Expect fears to continue to resurface. Healing from trauma is a process, one that takes far longer than we would like. I’ve found that when fears resurface, dealing with them happens quicker and less painfully than the previous time. Progress is made. Healing happens in a deeper layer. My character is shaped. My life becomes more full and rewarding.

How easy it is to be overwhelmed by the problem that we paralyze ourselves and never work toward the solution.

I'm painfully aware of the public's deference toward an ordained minister. While wearing my collar, I've been allowed unquestioned access through many doors. Some are literal, such as to a hospital's intensive care unit. Others are figurative, as total strangers have shared with me the intimate secrets they denied to their spouses and even to their own pastors.

Tyler’s father was not only abusive towards his mother, but reportedly also physically abused Tyler. He recalled that on one occasion his inebriated father beat him with a vacuum cleaner extension until the skin came off of his back. In addition to the drunken beatings by his father, Tyler indicated that he was sexually abused by both a woman and a man on separate occasions, and witnessed his father attempting to molest a young female friend.

The truly sad thing is that Tyler’s story is not unique. In fact, it’s far too common. An estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse exist in America today.

Research has shown that the way a parent reacts to finding out that their child has been molested greatly impacts how their child will heal. Let them know in no uncertain terms that you do believe them, and that it was not their fault. Next, make sure that they receive therapy to address the significant trauma.
