Egyptian Cleric Plans to Ban Veils

The head of Egypt's top educational institution is facing criticism from fellow Islamic leaders after he declared his intention to bar women wearing face veils from attending class. Cleric Mohammed Sayyed Tantawi made the announcement last week after he ordered a student at a middle school he was visiting to remove her face veil, according to the Associated Press. Tantawi reportedly told the young woman that the covering "has nothing to do with Islam" and said he would formally ban face veils from the al-Azhar system of schools and universities he leads.

Tantawi's supporters argue that a ban on the niqab will serve as both a security precaution making students easier to identify and as a counter to religious extremism

The president of Mali has announced that he is not going to sign the country's new family law, instead returning it to parliament for review.

Muslim groups have been protesting against the law, which gives greater rights to women, ever since parliament adopted it at the start of the month.

Some of the provisions that have proved controversial give more rights to women.

For example, under the new law women are no longer required to obey their husbands, instead husbands and wives owe each other loyalty and protection.

Women get greater inheritance rights, and the minimum age for girls to marry in most circumstances is raised to 18.

One of the other key points Muslims have objected to is the fact that marriage is defined as a secular institution.

Obese People Have 'Severe Brain Degeneration'

A new study finds obese people have 8 percent less brain tissue than normal-weight individuals. Their brains look 16 years older than the brains of lean individuals

Those classified as overweight have 4 percent less brain tissue and their brains appear to have aged prematurely by 8 years.

Obese people had lost brain tissue in the frontal and temporal lobes, areas of the brain critical for planning and memory, and in the anterior cingulate gyrus (attention and executive functions), hippocampus (long-term memory) and basal ganglia (movement), the researchers said in a statement today. Overweight people showed brain loss in the basal ganglia, the corona radiata, white matter comprised of axons, and the parietal lobe (sensory lobe).

"The brains of obese people looked 16 years older than the brains of those who were lean, and in overweight people looked 8 years older," Thompson said.

A bill in the Bahamian legislature that would criminalize marital rape has sparked public debate. The lawmaker who drafted the bill, Minister of State for Social Development Loretta Butler-Turner, says the bill would combat attitudes about spousal relationships that leave women vulnerable to abuse

Currently, charges of rape can only be brought against a spouse if the couple is legally separated or in the process of getting a divorce

The bill has ignited debate among the public during government-organized forums and on radio talk shows. Many say they are opposed to the measure because it contradicts their Christian values or because they believe it will lead to women filing false charges against their husbands

One of the most vocal religious leaders in opposition to the bill, Senior Pastor of the Kingdom Life Church Cedric Moss, has said that sexual violence within marriage should not be called rape and should be addressed with lesser penalties than non-marital rape

Ahmadinejad to Appoint Women to Iranian Cabinet

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced yesterday that he will appoint at least three women to his cabinet. According to Agence France Presse, Fatemeh Ajorlou will be appointed as social welfare minister, Marzieh Vahid Dastjerdi as health minister, and a third currently unidentified woman will be appointed to a third minister position. If approved, these appointees will be the first women cabinet ministers since Iran's Islamic Revolution in 1979.

Both Ajorlou and Dastjerdi are reportedly hardline conservatives, supporting enforcement of Islamic dress codes for women and proposing gender segregated healthcare, respectively

Women played a major role in the public uprising that followed the election and were particularly visible during the election campaigns

There is speculation that Ahmadinejad's move to appoint women to the cabinet is a means of courting women's support after the post-election turmoil

Controversial Shia family law Published Before Afghanistan Elections

The controversial Shia family law, with some revisions, that restricts the rights of Shia women in Afghanistan was published in the country's official Gazette on July 27th, making the law's provisions official. The law applies only to Afghanistan's 10-20 percent Shia minority. President Hamid Karzai published the law as he courts fundamentalist Shia mullahs in advance of the presidential elections scheduled for next week.

According to Human Rights Watch, the final version of the law allows men to withhold food and basic provisions from their wives if they refuse sexual demands, grants guardianship only to fathers and grandfathers, and requires men's permission for their wives to work. There is also a provision that allows rapists to pay "blood money" to victims in order to evade prosecution.

The unique wildlife of the Galapagos Islands is under threat from disease-carrying mosquitoes arriving on board growing numbers of aircraft and tourist boats

Experts fear the spread of the southern house mosquito, or Culex quinquefasciatus, could have the same devastating effect in the Galapagos as in Hawaii during the late 19th century, when disease wiped out many indigenous birds.

Like many a village elder campaigning for a seat on a provincial council in rural Afghanistan, Okmina begins each day donning a black turban, strapping on a pistol and heading out to talk to neighbors.

The difference is she is a woman, dressed as a man.

Watching Okmina meet with villagers in traditional Afghan men's baggy trousers and long shirt, with a few strands of red henna-dyed hair poking out from the black turban coiled around her head, it is hard to tell she is not a man, until she speaks.

She says she started wearing men's clothing, ditching the all-enveloping burqa worn by many women in Afghanistan, when she was made a tribal elder in her community, settling disputes among tribes in Tani and neighboring districts.

Male villagers in Okmina's remote province seem to relate to her just as they would to a man, discussing their problems with her while their children scurry about her feet.

A group of rabbis and Jewish mystics have taken to the skies over Israel, praying and blowing ceremonial trumpets to ward off swine flu.

About 50 religious leaders circled over the country on Monday, chanting prayers and blowing the horns called "shofars".

The flight's aim was "to stop the pandemic so people will stop dying from it," Rabbi Yitzhak Batzri was quoted as saying in Yedioth Aharanot newspaper.

The flu is often referred to as H1N1 in Israel, where pigs are seen as unclean.

The 10:10 position gives the clock or watch a number of benefits:

The hands not overlapping, so they’re fully and clearly visible and their styling can be admired

The arrangement of the hands is symmetrical, which people generally find more pleasant than asymmetry, making the product more appealing to customers

The manufacturer’s logo, usually in the center of the face under the 12, is not only visible, but nicely framed by the hands

Additional elements on the face (like date windows secondary dials), usually placed near the 3, 6, or 9, won’t be obscured

the standard setting used to be used to 8:20, but this made the face look like it was frowning
