Metal detectorist finds historic gold and black diamond ring

A metal detectorist was stunned when he unearthed a beautiful and historic gold ring with a rare black diamond set inside it in a muddy field.

John Stevens, 42, couldn't believe his eyes when he rubbed off the soil and saw lettering indicating the ring was from the early medieval period, possibly the 11th century.

It is believed the ring would have belonged to a wealthy person either from the Church, or possibly even royalty.

Black diamonds are rare today and would have been even rarer nearly 1,000 years ago, having come from Africa.

The ring has not yet been valued but is thought it could be worth tens of thousands of pounds.

It is currently being examined and will go to an inquest where it will almost certainly be recorded as treasure.

Mr Stevens, a businessman from Hinckley, Leics, has been metal detecting for 30 years, and this is his best find yet.

Stevens said he was with friends in a ploughed field when he came across the ring about five inches down.

A bizarre Government-funded campaign is being launched to encourage people to exercise while they’re waiting for a bus.

According to the campaign’s organisers, those minutes spent at the bus stop watching the traffic go by could be spent more usefully – by standing on one leg, pointing your toes or clenching your buttocks.

But the latest attempt to get Britain fit has been slammed by an MP as ‘a shocking waste of taxpayers’ money’.

And one angry passenger said last night: ‘Fares are ridiculously high as it is. So why don’t they use the money they’re spending on this nonsense to cut the cost of bus travel?’

Leaflets and posters setting out six Pilates-style exercise moves to do at the bus stop are being distributed to passengers travelling on buses between Blackburn and Manchester.

Organisers claim it will help people with busy lives to fit exercise into their day and avoid health problems such as heart disease and obesity.

A ghostly apparition of a young girl is being blamed for a series of crashes on a stretch of country road.

David Taylor, chairman of the Parasearch group, said he had received reports that the apparition had been the cause of several accidents along the road between Wollescote and Cradley.

Paranormal researchers are investigating the sightings of a girl in Victorian dress on a road in the West Midlands, which locals say is an accident blackspot.

"There could be a logical explanation for this, it could be an optical illusion of some sorts.

"The image had been described as a small girl between the ages of three and five years old and wearing Victorian clothes.

"We are trying to find out any stories locals might have of the area which might explain what or who this could be."

Resident say most of the crashes have been minor, but there have been a couple of serious incidents over the years.

The bizarre discovery was made by a doctor in Darwin as he made dinner earlier this week.

Peter Beaumont broke open an egg and was shocked to find a dead gecko inside. “I was cracking the eggs into a pan when I noticed one of them was all cloudy. I looked at the shell and saw a tiny gecko,” he said.

The lizard could not have entered the egg after it was cracked open because it was embedded between the interior of the shell and the egg’s membrane, he said.

Dr Beaumont believes the lizard climbed into the chicken’s bottom, perhaps to feed on an embryo, before dying and becoming cocooned in the developing egg.

Dr Beaumont, 60, the president of the Australian Medical Association in the Northern Territory, said his unusual find could be a world first.

He has handed the remains of the egg to health authorities who will try to work out exactly how the gecko got inside the egg.

The Australian Egg Corporation said it had never heard of such a case before.

A Quebec coroner is raising a red flag about the cotton swab, following the death of a man who used the common bathroom product to clean his ears.

Daniel St-Pierre, 43, died March 25, 2007 in Montreal after developing meningitis-induced intracranial complications caused by an ear infection.

The coroner says the best way to clean an ear is with a pinky.

Ramsay said St-Pierre likely developed the infection after perforating his eardrum with a swab, and that he didn't realize what had been bothering him was an infection.

"We think that prompted him to use a cotton swab and that's when he ruptured his ear drum," Ramsay told CTV News on Tuesday. "This allowed the infection to move to the inner ear and once the infection is in the inner ear, you're basically millimeters away from the meninges (the three membranes covering the brain and spinal cord)."

It's thought that the man died within 48 hours of the infection develoing.

On first drink, I think my gag reflex was activated as I nearly spit it out.

It tastes like a watered-down, carbonated bloody mary.

This is without a doubt the most disgusting "beer" that I have ever encountered. Stay away.

Smells like vomit, looks like a pink soda.

Wow, this is like mixing a V8, one of the worst drinks ever, with a Budweiser, also one of the worst drinks ever.

The result truly is the worst drink ever. I drank a 1/3 of an ounce, maybe, from a 24 oz. can and I think I’m sick.

Aroma of tomato and slight hints of beer.

The flavor also had black pepper notes in it.

DON'T poke your eye with a sharp stick. It has nothing to do with dogs, but it's a good rule nonetheless.
