TOE SOCKS

These pre-shrunk 'To Sox' were designed to act as toe protectors. Produced during World War II, it was claimed that they could reduce hosiery costs by up to 80 per cent. They were designed to be worn over the big toes, to protect socks from wear.

LIGHT SPECTACLES

Invented in the U.S. in the 1930s, these specs were adorned with two small, battery-powered lights, with a long wire trailing beneath. The experience was marred only by the likelihood of electrocution when it rained.

There's a reason comedians call it "dying on stage."

Research by a Washington State University linguist found that people who tell bad jokes often endure an astonishing outpouring of hostility from the listeners.

"These were basically attacks intended to result in the social exclusion or humiliation of the speaker, punctuated on occasion with profanity, a nasty glare or even a solid punch to the arm,"

We're not talking about jokes that contain offensive material, or the type of slurs unleashed by former "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards. The joke that Bell used in her research was:

"What did the big chimney say to the little chimney?

"Nothing, chimneys can't talk."

The responses to this childish riddle included insults, glares, silence or even blows.

Talk about a tough crowd.

There are several reasons for the strong responses.

First, such canned humor often disrupts the natural flow of conversation.

A sheriff's department in Texas believes it may have caught the legendary chupacabra on camera.

Dewitt county deputies on patrol recorded what they believe is the mythical creature.

"I've been covering these back roads for a long time and I've never run across anything like this, until that day."

Last Friday, hours before sunset, corporal Brandon Riedel and his partner were checking fence-lines near Cuero when they stumbled across the alleged creature of the night.
"We came around a corner and saw this running down the road."
Riedel says it's hairless, with a long snout, short front legs and long back legs.
"It's just strange."

Some believe the thing the eventually disappeared into the brush could be the legendary goat-sucker himself... The chupacabra.

He tells us it looks a lot like this creature found dead in Cuero last year.
It was first believed to be a chupacabra.
But tests at Texas state showed it was some sort of coyote.

Metal detectorist finds historic gold and black diamond ring

A metal detectorist was stunned when he unearthed a beautiful and historic gold ring with a rare black diamond set inside it in a muddy field.

John Stevens, 42, couldn't believe his eyes when he rubbed off the soil and saw lettering indicating the ring was from the early medieval period, possibly the 11th century.

It is believed the ring would have belonged to a wealthy person either from the Church, or possibly even royalty.

Black diamonds are rare today and would have been even rarer nearly 1,000 years ago, having come from Africa.

The ring has not yet been valued but is thought it could be worth tens of thousands of pounds.

It is currently being examined and will go to an inquest where it will almost certainly be recorded as treasure.

Mr Stevens, a businessman from Hinckley, Leics, has been metal detecting for 30 years, and this is his best find yet.

Stevens said he was with friends in a ploughed field when he came across the ring about five inches down.

A bizarre Government-funded campaign is being launched to encourage people to exercise while they’re waiting for a bus.

According to the campaign’s organisers, those minutes spent at the bus stop watching the traffic go by could be spent more usefully – by standing on one leg, pointing your toes or clenching your buttocks.

But the latest attempt to get Britain fit has been slammed by an MP as ‘a shocking waste of taxpayers’ money’.

And one angry passenger said last night: ‘Fares are ridiculously high as it is. So why don’t they use the money they’re spending on this nonsense to cut the cost of bus travel?’

Leaflets and posters setting out six Pilates-style exercise moves to do at the bus stop are being distributed to passengers travelling on buses between Blackburn and Manchester.

Organisers claim it will help people with busy lives to fit exercise into their day and avoid health problems such as heart disease and obesity.

Isaac Hayes dies aged 65

Isaac Hayes, the 1970s king of soul and funk who became known to a new generation as a baritone-voiced cartoon chef, died last night. He was 65.

The Oscar-winning singer-song-writer, who came to prominence with the theme tune from the 1971 “blaxploitation” film Shaft, was found by members of his family, near a treadmill – which was still running – at his home in Memphis, Tennessee. The cause of death was not clear.

Hayes was one of the dominant black musicians of the 1970s alongside Al Green, James Brown and Stevie Wonder, and is credited with laying the groundwork for disco and rap music.

Always an arresting sight, with shaven head, gold chain and sunglasses, Hayes became a musical innovator and a figurehead for the black civil rights movement throughout the 1960s.

Hayes was also involved with humanitarian work. In 1995 he established the Isaac Hayes Foundation, which worked to increase literacy.
