Good vibrations may help reduce falls

Less than ten minutes standing on a vibrating platform several times a week could help reduce older people's risk of falls, Australian researchers have found.

PhD student Sven Rees of the University of Technology, Sydney and colleagues report their findings in the Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport.

"We're trying to look at interventions to assist with physical function in old age," says Rees.

As people age, they are more likely to lose balance and muscle strength, which makes them more likely to fall over.

Rees says previous research has suggested that vibration of muscles can cause reflex contractions, which in turn strengthens the muscles.

Rees and colleagues tested how steadily participants were able to stand on one leg.

Then they got some of the participants to do light resistance training on a vibrating platform.

The exercise sessions lasted for less than 10 minutes and took place three times a week for eight weeks.

The Italian government declared a state of emergency at the Pompeii archaeological site on Friday to try to rescue one of the world's most important cultural treasures from decades of neglect.

Archaeologists and art historians have long complained about the poor upkeep of Pompeii, dogged by lack of investment, mismanagement, litter and looting. Bogus tour guides, illegal parking attendants and stray dogs also plague visitors.

A report in daily Corriere della Sera this week said most of the 1,500 houses at the site are closed to the public, its frescoes have faded to become almost invisible and restoration work that began in 1978 has yet to be completed.

Every year at least 150 square meters of fresco and plaster work are lost for lack of maintenance

don't mistake honesty, which is admirable, for trash-talking, which is despicable.

2. "I don't know anything about the company."

interviewer will wonder why you're applying for the job

3. "No, I don't have any questions for you."

signals a lack of interest

4. "I'm going to need to take these days off."

don't bring it up prior to the salary negotiation/offer stage

5. "How long until I get a promotion?"

be certain you don't come off as entitled or ready to leave behind a job you don't even have yet.

6. "Are you an active member in your church?"

Avoid topics that are controversial

7. "As Lady Macbeth so eloquently put it..."

Scripted answers, although accurate, don't impress interviewers.

8. "And another thing I hate..."

Save your rants for your blog. When you're angry, you don't sway anybody's opinion about a topic, but you do make them like you less.

For one thing, they might disagree with you. They also won't take kindly to your bad attitude.

To the unsuspecting eye, these pictures may look as if crazed horses are running wild through a crowd, endangering the lives of the thousands around them.

In fact, these are the famous stallions of Menorca's traditional Fiesta of San Joan (Saint John).

The festival, which dates back to the 14th century, is celebrated every year at the start of the summer solstice and sees the trained horses walking through the streets of downtown Ciutadella on their hind legs to the delight of the gathered crowd.

The riders each represent the church, nobility, craftsmen and country people.

After the parade, the horses and their riders gallop through the streets and entertain the crowd with mounted games.

During the three-four day festival, people take to the streets and party non-stop.

As well as gathering to witness the horse parade, another usual tradition of the festival is for people to throw sackfuls of hazelnuts at one another.

Stella Onions doesn't worry about people staring.

Whether sitting outside a cafe or walking round the park, whenever she breastfeeds her two children, she ignores the women gawping and men brazenly pointing her out to their friends.

But such reactions are hardly surprising; the babes sucking at this middle-aged mother's breasts are toddlers aged five and three years old.

Josephine has said she doesn't want to stop till adulthood. She really enjoys it and has actually told me she won't stop until she gets married.

She often says: "I never want to stop my mummy milk."

'Zac loves it, too - he says it's yummy and sweet.'

Now Stella has begun a campaign to normalise breastfeeding, so that it becomes as acceptable elsewhere as it is in her home. She says the benefits must be appreciated.

Even the most liberal of mothers find the sight of other babies sucking beyond infancy disconcerting, let alone their own.
