Carp Pedicures Now Illegal

Washington state officials have banned a procedure that uses tiny fish to nibble dead skin off the feet of customers getting pedicures.

Peridot Nail Salon in Kent began offering the procedure several weeks ago, with customers paying $30 to have small, toothless carp tickle their toes for 15 minutes.

But the state Department of Licensing decided the procedure was unsanitary and potentially unsafe, and Thursday declared it illegal.

Agency spokeswoman Christine Anthony says state law requires that all implements in pedicures be sanitized, and there's just no way to sanitize live fish.

Fish pedicures created something of a splash in the D.C. area this past summer, where a northern Virginia spa offered similar pedicures. John Ho, who runs the Yvonne Hair and Nails salon with his wife, Yvonne Le, began offering the practice in March and said 5,000 people had taken the plunge as of July.

With the credit crunch kicking in, shoppers will be relieved to hear a cost-effective alternative to steak is now available for creating classic meat dishes.

The Testicle Cookbook: Cooking With Balls has been hailed as the world's first testicle recipe collection and includes testicle pizza, battered testicles and barbecued testicles with giblets.

And if counting the pennies isn't enough of a reason to indulge in the delicacy, testicles are also renowned for their libido-boosting properties.

Several different animals, including stallions, ostriches, bulls, pigs and turkeys, get the Erovic treatment.

"Wash testicles thoroughly for 30-45 minutes," begins the recipe for testicles pie.

"Once softened, mince them in a mincer."

A "very sharp knife" is needed for traditional style testicles, which get boiled, cut up and deep fried in hot oil.

Erovic also organises the World Testicle Cooking Championship, held annually in Serbia

When you LOL at silly pictures of cats with even sillier captions, Ben Huh laughs all the way to the bank.

Huh, a Seattle entrepreneur, has built a mini-empire on the unique brand of humor illustrated by the "LOLcats" craze: photos with captions punctuated by deliberately misspelled words and mangled phrases.

His network of eight Web sites, which includes I Can Has Cheezburger and I Can Has a Hot Dog, attracts 5 million users and 100 million page views a month.

Since buying I Can Has Cheezburger, Huh has added companion sites devoted to dogs, politics and really bad translations of English, among others. A fan favorite is Fail Blog, in which people take joy in others' mishaps.

When the company posts job openings, it receives a flood of résumés. The subject line of one cover letter read: "I can haz dream Job? My rezumez! Let me showz u thm."

"We want to make people happy for five minutes a day," he said.

"LOLcats is a language that is going to continue to get bigger and bigger,"

There's a reason comedians call it "dying on stage."

Research by a Washington State University linguist found that people who tell bad jokes often endure an astonishing outpouring of hostility from the listeners.

"These were basically attacks intended to result in the social exclusion or humiliation of the speaker, punctuated on occasion with profanity, a nasty glare or even a solid punch to the arm,"

We're not talking about jokes that contain offensive material, or the type of slurs unleashed by former "Seinfeld" star Michael Richards. The joke that Bell used in her research was:

"What did the big chimney say to the little chimney?

"Nothing, chimneys can't talk."

The responses to this childish riddle included insults, glares, silence or even blows.

Talk about a tough crowd.

There are several reasons for the strong responses.

First, such canned humor often disrupts the natural flow of conversation.

A New Zealand judge has made a 9-year-old girl a ward of the court so that her name can be changed from Talula Does the Hula From Hawaii

Family Court Judge Rob Murfitt listed a series of unusual names that New Zealand parents had given their children, and said he was concerned that such strange monikers would create hurdles for them as they grew up.

"It makes a fool of the child and sets her up with a social disability and handicap," the New Zealand Press Association quoted the judge as saying.

Among the names Murfitt cited: twins named Benson and Hedges -- after a brand of cigarettes; Violence; and Number 16 Bus Shelter.

The Registrar General of Births, Deaths and Marriages said in a statement that it had rejected names including Fish and Chips, Yeah Detroit, Stallion, Twisty Poi -- a staple food in Polynesian cuisine -- and Sex Fruit.

The Wilhelm scream is a near famous stock sound effect first used in 1951 for the film Distant Drums

The Wilhelm's revival came from Star Wars series sound designer Ben Burtt, who tracked down the original recording (which he found as a studio reel labeled "Man being eaten by alligator"). Although Distant Drums was the first known use of the sound, Burtt named it after "Pvt. Wilhelm", a minor character who emitted the same scream in the 1953 film The Charge at Feather River.

Since then, it's been used in over 130 movies; Spielberg and Lucas use it an awful lot (and are responsible for the popularization of the kinda-cheesey scream).

There are some things about Japan that just don't translate: capsule hotels, Pepsi Ice Cucumber and sadistic game shows, to name a few.

Now we can add the following video designed to help Japanese kids learn to use the toilet. It's not that I object to anthropomorphic jungle cats instructing big boys and girls to dump out, it's the oddly communal, musical way they do it.

Honestly, if I had just managed not to wet myself for the first time, the last thing I'd want is a big show-stopping, Patti LuPone number with my parents flanking either side of me, capped by a confetti flourish.

is it really necessary to have both the cartoon baby tiger and a real Japanese boy (at the cartoon's end) grunting and straining in an effort to pinch a loaf?
