doctors are calling for a ban on long pointed kitchen knives to reduce deaths from stabbing.

They argued many assaults are committed impulsively, prompted by alcohol and drugs, and a kitchen knife often makes an all too available weapon.

The research is published in the British Medical Journal.

The researchers said there was no reason for long pointed knives to be publicly available at all.

The study found links between easy access to domestic knives and violent assault are long established.

French laws in the 17th century decreed that the tips of table and street knives be ground smooth.

A century later, forks and blunt-ended table knives were introduced in the UK in an effort to reduce injuries during arguments in public eating houses.

The researchers say legislation to ban the sale of long pointed knives would be a key step in the fight against violent crime.

The manufacture, sale and importation of 17 bladed, pointed and other offensive weapons have been banned

A 7-year-old boy who took his grandmother's car on a joyride last month has been taken for a mental health evaluation after he allegedly beat her up inside a South Florida Wal-Mart

A man arrested for an indoor marijuana growing operation after a county worker smelled the illegal plant on a tax payment has been sentenced to 16 months in prison.

Eric Brian Michaelis, 37, also agreed to forfeit more than $65,000 in cash seized after Benton County sheriff's deputies found 230 marijuana plants inside his home in November.

Deputies found almost every room in the house filled with marijuana plants, from seedlings to bushes that were 4 feet tall. The operation included a back-up generator to power the grow lamps in case the electricity went out.

The investigation started when a Benton County tax clerk noticed that the $600 in cash that Michaelis used to pay his taxes smelled like marijuana.

"It's safe to say that it's at least the biggest indoor marijuana bust in the last 10 years," said Chief Deputy District Attorney Chris Stringer.

A man has been put on the sex offenders' register after being caught trying to have sex with a bike.

Robert Stewart was discovered half naked in his room by two cleaners at the Aberley House Hostel

Mr Stewart admitted to sexual breach of the peace

"They (the hostel cleaners) knocked on the door several times and there was no reply.

"They used a master key to unlock the door and they then observed the accused wearing only a white T-shirt, naked from the waist down.

"The accused was holding the bike and moving his hips back and forth as if to simulate sex."

The hostel staff informed the manager who reported Stewart to the police.

Although unusual he is not the first to be caught in a compromising situation with a object as Karl Watkins, an electrician, was jailed for having sex with pavements

Witnesses reported seeing him lying face down on the pavement with his trousers around his ankles.

Sylvester Stallone said he witnessed "a hellhole beyond your wildest dreams" while filming on the Burma border.

The actor and his movie crew were shooting "John Rambo", the fourth movie in the action series, on the Salween River separating Burma and Thailand.

"All the trails are mined. The only way into Burma is up the river."

Shots were fired over the film crew's heads and there were threats, he said.

He had first hand accounts, too, from the Burmese extras whose families were imprisoned.

Stallone returned eight days ago - before the crackdown last week against the largest pro-democracy protests in Burma in two decades.

He wants to retain the violence in the film - and is prepared to face the challenge from the film board

"This is full scale genocide. I want the violence in there because it is reality. It would be a whitewashing not to show what's over there," he said.

"I think there is a story that needs to be told," Stallone said. The film will be released in January.

An international counterfeiting gang tried to con the Bank of England out of £28 billion with “special issue” £500,000 notes that they had invented

They wanted the Bank to pay them the face value for thousands of forged notes, also including £1,000 notes - a denomination that had not been legal tender for more than 60 years.

Members of the gang told bank officials that they were representatives of Chinese families from the preCommunist era who owned the money and wished to exchange it.

They said that only six owners were left - ranging from 109 to 116 years of age - “so time is of the essence, every day counts”

It will not surprise you to know the Bank of England contacted the City of London Police

“As a matter of strict technicality, the name of counterfeit only applies to a note that has been legal tender, so actually the £500,000 note you see in this case would be better referred to as a thing.”

A store cashier struck a deaf customer in the head with a crowbar after he mistook the man's silence for rudeness and disrespect

"I can't believe someone would hit him for not speaking," said Goodnight's mother, Kay Goodnight. "When you're deaf, you don't make a point of starting conversations with people."

Cody Goodnight said he had walked several blocks from their house to the Family Dollar to buy a soft drink for his 5-year-old son. Inside the store, he put the soda on the counter to pay.

The cashier tried to speak to him but got angry when Goodnight didn't respond, Goodnight told police. The cashier threw Goodnight's change at him, scattering it on the floor.

A federal prosecutor accused of flying to Detroit last month to have sex with a 5-year-old girl committed suicide Friday in his cell in a Milan federal prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John D.R. Atchison was found unresponsive, taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 10:17 a.m.

He was charged with three felonies, the most serious of which was crossing state lines with intent to have sex with someone under 12. A conviction had carried a minimum of 30 years in prison.

A statement released Friday by his lawyer, James Thomas, said Atchison had "done a lot of good in his life."

"Unfortunately, he is going to be judged by his most recent charges and what we have read in the media, and not by the goodness, hard work or by the love of his family."

Atchison had attempted to hang himself with a bedsheet last month in a Sanilac county jail, but another inmate alerted guards who stopped the suicide attempt.

Danny Bonaduce is a felony suspect.

TMZ.com reports that last night, at the FOX Reality Channel Really Awards, Bonaduce jumped on stage, picked up "Survivor" star Jonny Fairplay and slammed him on his face, causing him to lose a few teeth and break a toe.

Fairplay was taken to a nearby hospital, where police were called.

Bonaduce is named as the suspect in a felony battery report.

Today on The Adam Carolla radio show Bonaduce said he's had a "thing" against Fairplay ever since he pulled the famous "grandmother stunt" on Survivor, lying that she had died in order to get sympathy on the show.

TMZ reports Danny said he thought the show was over and he was leaving, and Fairplay was on the stage, asking the audience why he was booing him. Danny says, as he walked by, he said "They're booing him because they hate him."

He then says he grabbed the butt of Fairplay's jeans and threw him over his head, not realizing how light he was. Danny says Fairplay face planted into one of the seats behind him.

"This is right at the top of the all time despicable crime list in Schenectady," said Schenectady Police spokesman Lt. Brian Kilcullen.

Wendy Cook of Saratoga was one of five women arrested during a police operation targeting prostitution in Schenectady. Police say Cook's five year old daughter and eight week old son were with her as she stayed out all night, having sex and doing drugs. Police say at one point, cook even snorted cocaine off the baby's stomach as she was breastfeeding.

Police say Wendy Cook, 37 of Saratoga, had been out all night, selling sex and smoking crack and snorting cocaine, while her children were with her.

Cook is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday. Her children were turned over to family members. Police say that the infant will be tested for cocaine.

According to the natives, there was a magic stone in the wilderness that possessed the ability to swallow anything that passed by. The Native Americans avoided the mysterious area near Glastenbury Mountain and considered it to be cursed, using it only for a burial ground.

Child Molester Attempts Suicide

The federal prosecutor arrested after officials say he flew to Detroit for a sexual encounter with a 5-year-old girl unsuccessfully tried to commit suicide earlier today, according to the Sanilac County, Michigan sheriff.

J.D. Roy Atchison, 53, of Gulf Breeze tied a bed sheet to the top bunk in his jail cell early and tried to hang himself, Sheriff Virgil Strickler said.

Atchison's attempt to take his own life came only a days after a federal judge removed him from suicide watch.

An inmate alerted a guard shortly after 4 a.m. that Atchison was trying to kill himself. The guard intervened before Atchison placed any stress on his neck.

"The guard had just finished his rounds when one of the fellow inmates of Mr. Atchison yelled to come back quick," Strickler said.

After the unsuccessful suicide attempt, guards placed Atchison in a suicide watch unit in the jail. He was later taken to an undisclosed federal facility where he'll be monitored, Strickler said.

Prisoners Pretty in Pink

Three county inmates in the jail here lay on their bunks, not saying much. They wore pink jumpsuits and pink slippers, and one was wrapped in pink sheets.

Despite the cramped condition of the tiny jail, the inmates said sitting there was better than working outside, where they might be seen by people they know.

"I'm not going outside in these things. It's a good deterrent because I don't want to wear them anymore."

"You can make that two," another inmate said from a different cell.

"You can probably make it three or four," the inmate added.

Low got the idea of pink jumpsuits from a sheriff in Arizona, Joe Arpaio, who bought pink boxers to keep inmates from stealing the underwear and other clothing. In Mason, Low dyed the jumpsuits and slippers pink, and the color later bled to sheets, underwear and other articles during washings.
