Salzburg, Austria: The perfect break

Perhaps it is all those Christmas repeats of The Sound of Music, but Salzburg seems strangely familiar, even to a novice.

The wooded slopes of the Mönchsberg – the mountain that forms a backdrop to the city – rise to meet snow-capped peaks, while far below Baroque churches and palaces follow the bend of the Salzach River.

Graceful fountains gild cobbled squares and locals of a certain age wear lederhosen and the frilly peasant dresses known as dirndl.

But before Rodgers and Hammerstein came Mozart, and no visit would be complete without a nod towards his legacy. Chamber groups perform his music every night, and his homes are open to the public.

But it is not all Wolfgang and Maria — the city has other museums and some fine art galleries. And if you tire of the cultural attractions, there are always the coffee houses and beer gardens.

Eamon and Antoinette McGuckin were taken to hospital and their kids - ages 1 through 6 - were taken into care temporarily after the adult McGuckins apparently passed out in a hotel lobby and bar. The plot thickens as stories report that Antoinette says she only had three beers. Friends and neighbours describe them as devoted homebody parents rather than as, y'know, ginhead chavs.

Even for the most upstanding of us, drinking in front of children poses problems.

I've never gotten blotto around the under-18s but my daughter frequently brandishes her plastic stemware and says "This is my wine."

But so what? Drinking is part of the adult world. We drink responsibly. We don't drive afterward.

A big question is, does drinking around your children promote healthy drinking habits (witness the enduring story of Italian children learning to sip wine from their toddler years) or does it normalise a dangerous drug?

Kirsty Stanton is six. She was born at just under 24 weeks, weighing 11/2lb.

Yesterday, a campaign was launched to reduce the legal limit of 'social abortions' from 24 weeks to 20 weeks.

While the case for Hillary Clinton to stay in the race is shakier than ever, one ugly reason for staying in could be found Tuesday amid the ruddy, sun-kissed Hoosiers who cheered her on to victory at the Indianapolis Speedway.

With Clinton posing alongside pioneering Indy speedster Sarah Fisher, there were almost no African-Americans to be seen

"I'm kind of still up in the air between McCain and Hillary," said Jason Jenkins, 32, who cited information from a hoax e-mail as a reason to spurn Obama.

"I'll be honest with you. Barack scares the hell out of me,"he said. "He swore on the Koran."

Obama did manage to pull in many white voters, but still encountered similar sentiments from a man who refused to shake his hand at a diner in Greenwood, Ind.

"I can't stand him," the man said. "He's a Muslim. He's not even pro-American as far as I'm concerned."

He has to convince people that he can win over working-class whites

That cold calculus, while not of Clinton's making, gives her a reason to stay
