A government department of the State of Hawaii is demanding the retraction of a political cartoon published Jan. 18 on the satirical web site http://www.zeroshibai.com/ and reprinted Jan. 21 on http://www.hawaiireporter.com/ The demands come in response to images and text ridiculing the Office of Hawaiian Affairs' Kau Inoa campaign as "Cow Inoa." Kau Inoa, Hawaiian for "place your name" is building a roll of Hawaiians to participate in a Hawaiian tribal government. Haunani Apoliona, writing in her capacity as "Chairperson, Board of Trustees, Office of Hawaiian Affairs" (OHA) in a Jan. 24 statement demands: "The cartoon should be pulled and the secret author publicly identified." OHA's backers are calling and emailing businesses demanding they pull their ads from HawaiiReporter.

OHA's attitude should be a sharp warning to Native Hawaiians. Indian reservations are -- by law -- often places where constitutional rights do not apply.

Lord Darzi, the Health Minister, told the Lords yesterday: “The Government is committed to single sex accommodation, not single sex wards – they are two different things. The only way we are going to have single sex wards in the NHS is to build the whole of the NHS into single rooms (really?)…that is an aspiration that cannot be met.

“We used to have single sex wards 15 years ago but medicine has moved on.”

Note his words carefully. There is no mention of mixed sex wards – only “accommodation”. In other words, the Government is no longer committed to the provision of “single sex wards” but to “single sex accommodation”, a piece of fudging which means, in essence, that mixed sex wards will continue to exist

Individuals who pay income taxes would get up to $600, working couples $1,200 and those with children an additional $300 per child under the agreement. Workers who make at least $3,000 but don't pay taxes would get $300 rebates.

While folks who listen to Limbaugh can proclaim their core beliefs from the rooftops, liberal "values" must be slowly indoctrinated into the mainstream. This is why liberal talk radio is such a failure. Except for their radical base, not many people can take the left-wing mantra straight up.

Whatever polls may say, the majority of the American people do not embrace higher taxes, the culture of perpetual victimhood, government intervention in their lives, the taking of innocent life, and the defeat of our military at the hands of those who would see us all dead.

The first candidate who climbs up on the rooftop with the Rush and the rest of us and shouts these things out loud will be the one who walks away with the prize this summer.

Britain has slipped out of the ranks of fully "free" countries in this year's Heritage Index of Economic Freedom, reflecting the sharp rise in the tax burden and ballooning state sector.

The ever harsher verdict on Britain comes as Mr Brown's tax and spend policies begin to reshape the basic structure of the UK plc, transforming it from one of Europe's leanest fiscal states to one of the most bloated.

"Total government expenditures, including consumption and transfer payments, are very high. Government spending has been rising since the 1990s and in the most recent year equaled 44.7 percent of GDP," said the UK country report.

The winners as always are the island states of Hong Kong and Singapore, the poster economies offering open ports, minimal capital controls, and the rule of law.

Ireland (3) has held its place as Europe's beacon of freedom. Now the playground of hedge funds, private equity, and billionaires, it is unrecognizable from the super-tax backwater of the 1980s.

McCain's lying here. Alaskans want ANWR tapped. Trouble is, the Federal government owns the land in question. It's the Federal government making the decision to not drill in this Pristine Ecologically-Sensitive Wasteland and not the state itself.

You hear it every night on “Lou Dobbs Tonight.” You read it in newspaper editorials.

When I think of Democrats, I think about Big Government, socialism, countries-without-borders, negotiating with dictators, giving up in Iraq, homosexual rights, diversity, and people who oppose the death penalty except when the person being executed is in the womb. I DISAGREE with those people. I don’t want to compromise with them. I want to defeat them.

We could pull half the troops out of Iraq and hope our sons and daughters aren’t in that poor group that stays behind. We could outlaw half the abortions in the country. We could socialize some of the hospitals. We could tell Mahmoud Ahmadinejad that we’ll meet him half way -- wherever that might be.

The more laws Congress passes, the more miserable we all are likely to be. The Federal Government has a unique ability to mess up almost anything it touches with the exception of our great fighting forces.

Gordon Brown has thrown his weight behind a move to allow hospitals to take organs from dead patients without explicit consent.

The proposals would mean consent for organ donation after death would be automatically presumed, unless individuals had opted out of the national register or family members objected.

But Mr Brown, who carries a donor card, has made it clear he backs an even more radical revamp of the system, which would lead to donation by "presumed consent". The approach is modelled on that of Spain, which has the highest proportion of organ donors in the world.

The taskforce report - to be released on Tuesday - calls for a senior doctor to be appointed in every hospital as a "champion" of donation, along with a lay person to spread the message about the importance of donation locally.

"If, as a doctor you have turned your thoughts to your patient being a donor when they are still living, that is a real conflict."

The good news is that ICE was twice as effective in 2007 than in the previous year:

Federal agents who track down fugitive illegal immigrants arrested more than 30,000 people nationally in fiscal year 2007, nearly double the previous year, officials said Tuesday. . . .

There were more than 30,408 arrests nationally in fiscal 2007, which ended Sept. 30, compared to 15,462 last year, ICE said.

The bad news is that at least half of the 10.3 million immigrants who have arrived since 2000 are illegal (about 5.6 million). That's an average of 800,000 illegals per year.

Thus ICE is capturing less than 4 percent of the criminals coming into our country each year.

LOS ANGELES - As wildfires were charging across Southern California, nearly two dozen water-dropping helicopters and two massive cargo planes sat idly by, grounded by government rules and bureaucracy.

It took as long as a day for Navy, Marine and California National Guard helicopters to get clearance early this week, in part because state rules require all firefighting choppers to be accompanied by state forestry "fire spotters" who coordinate water or retardant drops. By the time those spotters arrived, the powerful Santa Ana winds stoking the fires had made it too dangerous to fly.

"The weight of bureaucracy kept these planes from flying, not the heavy winds," Republican U.S. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher told The Associated Press. "When you look at what's happened, it's disgusting, inexcusable foot-dragging that's put tens of thousands of people in danger."

The spotters have 24 hours to report for duty, and it took nearly all that time for them and the National Guard crews to assemble.

Officials at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have made a serious proposal that consumers switch to UHT (Ultra-High Temperature or Ultra-Heat Treated) milk to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It is part of a government strategy to ensure that some 90 per cent of milk on sale will not require refrigeration by 2020.

Officials have calculated that by reducing chiller capacity in supermarkets, convenience stores and corner shops, carbon emissions would be significantly reduced.

Another target that has incensed farmers is that methane emissions from dairy cattle should be reduced by 60 per cent within 15 to 20 years.

Tom Hind, dairy adviser at the National Farmers’ Union, insists that this target is outrageous and could be achieved only by destroying half the national dairy herd and reducing it from two million to one million cattle.

More than half of IT workers say they've fallen asleep at work, according to a new online survey.

And, nearly half of techies also are apparently in the mood for love. Forty-seven percent of tech pros admit they've kissed a co-worker, according to the online survey of 5,700 U.S. workers, including 163 techies

Forty-nine percent of male techies say they've fallen asleep at work, while only 35 percent of women admitted doing so.

Across all professions surveyed, 45 percent admitted to having fallen asleep on the job. And nearly two-thirds of government workers -- 64 percent -- admitted to falling asleep on the job. Maybe because they spend so much time on their feet, workers in retail were least likely to fall asleep on the job.

Why Government Will Always Grow Larger

We are back to the point in America where over half of the population gets their money from government in one way or another--working for local, state, federal government; working for a company that supplies government with products or services; gets welfare (and that includes Medicare and Social Security).

Why will Social Security never be reformed? Because its just too much money for old people who vote. Right up until we go broke paying for it.

Why is it so hard to find Republican politicians who truly support and will fight for smaller government?

Because our political system is geared to reward big spending and punish politicians who are stingy with taxpayer dollars. Everyone may say that they want candidates who are going to reduce the deficit, but then most of those same people will vote for a candidate who brings the pork home to their district or state. In other words, most people want fiscal conservatism in the abstract, not when it may affect their lives.

Moreover, let's say you kill a wasteful project or vote to cut funding to a pork program: what's the reaction? "Oh, it's only a few million dollars."

On the other hand, the people whose project and funds were cut will raise holy hell and in your next election, you'll be accused of hating fill in the blank (children, puppies, Mother Earth, education) because you voted to cut that money out of the budget.
