Suzuki underlined the importance of looking backward by explaining that, because the past 50 years have seen a boom in technology and population expansion, ideas of economic growth have been skewed.

“That means you have lived your entire lives in a completely unsustainable period,” Suzuki said to the young audience. “You all think [economic] growth and change is normal. It’s not.”

He urged today’s youth to speak out against politicians complicit in climate change, even suggesting they look for a legal way to throw our current political leaders in jail for ignoring science – drawing rounds of cheering and applause. Suzuki said that politicians, who never see beyond the next election, are committing a criminal act by ignoring science.

A young mother-of-three is to be tried by a crown court jury after being accused of throwing an apple core from her car on to the pavement.

The council originally wanted simply to issue a £60 on-the-spot penalty for the alleged offence, said to have been committed on March 19 last year while Miss Badger's Volkswagen Golf was parked on a street in Wolverhampton town centre.

Miss Badger refused to pay and the local authority took her to the magistrates' court, where she chose to be tried by a jury in a crown court.

She faces a fine of up to £20,000 or six months in prison if she is found guilty of the charge, which states that she threw "controlled waste" from the car.

She is accused of "knowingly causing the deposit of controlled waste, namely an apple core, on land which did not have a waste management licence".

In truth, CFL bulbs contain only 5mg of mercury (about the size of a pin head) compared with 500mg in an old thermometer. Yet the instructions for how to clean up a broken one do make them sound as environmentally friendly as an oil spill: open the windows and leave the room for 15 minutes; wear rubber gloves; don’t vacuum a hard surface (it will spread the fumes); pick the pieces up with duct tape; wipe everything with wet towels; double-bag the debris; and then take to a specialist recycling centre (5).

The only headache these bulbs are likely to give us - apart from one induced by eyestrain while reading under their dim light - is to make us worry unnecessarily about the minutiae of our daily lives.

Whether the illumination from a CFL is good or not is an aesthetic judgement – but the light quality is certainly different. Light from CFLs may appear gloomy, flat and yellow – or soft, even and warm depending on your preference. Just don’t expect them to be the same as your existing bulbs.

Other problems with CFLs include: flickering; being slow to come on and warm up to full light level; light levels fading as the bulbs age; radio-frequency interference with electronic equipment and broadband signal and remote controls.

A CFL that uses 13-18 watts is supposed to produce the same amount of light as a 60-watt incandescent.

In practice, to replace a 60-watt incandescent you need a 20-watt CFL for approximately the same lighting level, and for maximum life expectancy you should keep your CFL on for at least 15 minutes each time.

A number of other factors can also drastically shorten the life of your CFL bulb and reduce any cost advantage: turning on and off too frequently; using it upside down (ie, socket ‘up’, light ‘down’ – in this position the heat from the light rises and overheats the electronics); fitting it in a recessed or enclosed position (overheating again); fitting it somewhere cold; putting it in an incompatible dimmer system (designed for incandescents), electronic timer, motion detector or light detector; or placing it anywhere that vibrates (eg, near a garage door or in a ceiling fan)

Officials at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs have made a serious proposal that consumers switch to UHT (Ultra-High Temperature or Ultra-Heat Treated) milk to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

It is part of a government strategy to ensure that some 90 per cent of milk on sale will not require refrigeration by 2020.

Officials have calculated that by reducing chiller capacity in supermarkets, convenience stores and corner shops, carbon emissions would be significantly reduced.

Another target that has incensed farmers is that methane emissions from dairy cattle should be reduced by 60 per cent within 15 to 20 years.

Tom Hind, dairy adviser at the National Farmers’ Union, insists that this target is outrageous and could be achieved only by destroying half the national dairy herd and reducing it from two million to one million cattle.

SYDNEY: Australian-led scientists have designed a new space habitat that might one day allow astronauts on the Moon or Mars to be 90 to 95 per cent self-sufficient.

The development of such as system could save billions of dollars in shuttle trips to re-supply lunar or space colonies and brings closer the vision of a human habitat on Mars.

Devised by an international team of 30 space scientists, Luna Gaia would be a 'closed-loop' environment, meaning that almost all material within the system is recycled with very little need for input from outside sources. The current design caters for a team of 12 astronauts under isolation for up to three years.

The proposed system, is unlikely to be up and running any time soon. Chartres estimates it will be another 20 to 30 years before the funding for the set-up and the practicality of providing the space for plant growth in a spacecraft is realised.

The full-blown "greenery" of the European Union (backed by all three major UK political parties) came under serious challenge today at the largely unreported Green Party conference in Liverpool.

There, delegates delivered a near unanimous resolution calling for a halt in the use of large scale biofuels – or "agrofuels", as they prefer to call them.

On top of the destruction of ecosystems, they say, agrofuels are precipitating a human rights problem of epic proportions as speculators are seizing arable land as well as evicting indigenous peoples from their forest homes. Food prices are escalating, putting basic staples outside of the reach of families living close to the bread line - even in European countries, as evidenced by Italy's "pasta strike" last week and rising UK bread prices.

This, they say, will cause global food shortages exactly when we should be boosting food production to maintain stable prices.

Amidst all the talk about carbon dioxide emissions and global warming comes news that Norway's national mascot may be contributing to the destruction of the environment, through burping and other bodily functions.

But now some researchers linked to Norway's technical university (NTNU) in Trondheim contend that moose are responsible for tons of gas emissions a year through their frequent burping and, well, farting.

"Shoot a moose and save yourself a climate quota," joked moose researcher (and moose hunter) Reidar Andersen at NTNU to newspaper VG on Tuesday. He's published a book on the life of a moose.

A grown moose will burp and pass so much methane gas in the course of a year that it amounts to 2,100 kilos of carbon dioxide emissions.

Governor Eliot Spitzer Friday signed legislation requiring that automobile manufacturers affix "global warming index" stickers to new cars and passenger trucks beginning in the 2010 model year. The stickers will detail carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted by operating the vehicle.

The index will be based on emissions of carbon dioxide, a major contributor to warming temperatures worldwide, in addition to methane, nitrous oxide, hydrofluorocarbons, perfluorocarbons and sulfur hexafluoride. All six gases are governed by the Kyoto Protocol.

Each sticker will include an index that compares the emissions of global warming gases from the vehicle with the average projected emissions from all vehicles of the same model year, and identifies the vehicle model within its class with the lowest emissions of that model year.

Dead Whale Could Explode

The rotting cadaver of a dead whale was floating in a west coast fjord on Wednesday, sending a foul odor over the area while officials worried it could explode at any time.

"Well, I wouldn't exactly call it an explosion, but it can be like an enormous fart," said Tore Haug of the Norwegian Marine Research Institute in Bergen.

He warned emergency crews trying to tow the cadaver out of the fjord that gases built up in the dead whale's stomach could cause a blowout.

"It would be quite unpleasant if the stomach blows up," Haug told web site bt.no. "It's not very nice to have rotten whale parts showering over you."

Frode Vindenes, a volunteer with the Bergen Sea Rescue Corps, was among those trying to keep it away from land. "The whale is completely white and it smells intensely," he told Aftenposten.no. "It's almost deteriorated. There are seagulls all over it."

It is renowned as one of Britain's most tranquil beauty spots.

Millions of people visit the Lake District every year to enjoy the stunning views and many have been so captivated they have bought second homes in the area.

But now members of a so-called "popular liberation army" have threatened to spoil everything, branding outsiders "leech-like scum" and threatening them with violence.

Cumbria Police are taking the threats so seriously that they have advised householders to be extra vigilant.

The PLAW letter, entitled Let It Be Known, reads: "The Popular Liberation Army of Westmorland hereby pledges that we will one day see an end to the occupation of Westmorland by newcomers, holiday home owners and the encroaching leech-like scum of that ilk.

It concludes by claiming that it is being supported by extremists in the United States.

"With funding from America and special training we are now able to start our own battle."

CALGARY - Alberta power utility Enmax Corp. said yesterday it is building a huge new power station in Southern Alberta fired with natural gas, partly to help boost the provincial grid's reliability after Alberta's aggressive expansion into wind energy made it vulnerable to power disruption.

"We now have so much windpower generation that we need to fall back on reliable sources of power," said Peter Hunt, an Enmax spokesman.

"The problem with wind power is that the wind doesn't blow all the time, so the greater percentage of the system depends on wind, the more vulnerable to disruption the system becomes when the wind stops blowing."
