Good news hard to swallow

"The day nobody was killed in Iraq" read the headline from the Australian newspaper, and it was an understatement to say the least.

The report from the Australian newspaper documented an array of success stories that Iraq war skeptics had not long ago insisted could never occur:

"… U.S. troop deaths declined for the fifth successive month to 39, the lowest such total this year and the seventh lowest in 56 months of war."

"… [C]ivilian casualties in the city [Baghdad] have declined significantly recently. … That represents a drop of more than 50 percent from August. …"

"Since the surge in operations started in June of this year, the number of car bombs has fallen by 65 percent, and casualties from roadside bombs by 80 percent."

It's time to say "thank you" and "good job" to those who risk so much, so that we may all be safe and free.

I can certainly understand why neo-pagans like Al Gore believe, despite overwhelming scientific evidence to the contrary, man-made, catastrophic global warming is the gravest threat to the planet.

What I can't understand is why people who claim to believe in the Bible as the inerrant, inspired Word of God do so.

the Bible explicitly states: "While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease."

It means God controls the world's temperature, not man. God controls the climate, not man. God controls the earth's "eco-system," not man. God controls our environment, not man.

It is so presumptuous and haughty of believers and non-believers alike to think man is in control of the destiny of the planet God created for us.

Yes, there will come a time when the Earth is destroyed – and intense heat will be the mechanism God employs.

We're talking about heat so severe it melts the very elements that comprise the Earth.

In the 21st century, the limitless opportunities to shoot, edit, transmit and develop photographs would astound the aforementioned visionary men. The film "Biloxi Blues," based on the work of Neil Simon, explained that when a writer puts words down on paper, something magical happens. The same could be said for photography. While the written word may be mankind's finest achievement, capturing the world on film runs a close second.

What are the elements that combine to produce a perfect photograph?

Light and shadow for one thing. Sunrise and sunset are always the best times to capture magical moments.

Angles and vectors also play a part in the equation. Framing the shot is extremely vital. If you're working with people, you'll want to put them at ease and act "as if the camera wasn't there."

In this business, you'll have to stay humble, hungry, aggressive, proactive and focused (no pun intended).

The media's Iraq con job

What made me more anxious is that I swore I'd tell the full story, the good, bad and ugly. That's what the press is supposed to do. They're supposed to tell the stories of the events that happen. The job of the press is to explain what's going on in places where most readers will never be able to go.

Unlike what I had read in the newspapers, I didn't find demoralized troops complaining about a dangerous quagmire in Iraq, and believe me, I asked.

Even more surprising was how poor the reporting back home has been. Time magazine writer Tim McGirk reported on a Haditha massacre while leaving out huge important facts that were pertinent to the credibility of his sources.

As a result of the research or omissions, Marines have been arrested and charged, and although most have been exonerated, the consequences of the report have ruined careers and lives.

What has been the consequence for McGirk or Time magazine? McGirk himself refused to support his own words under oath.

There are some who would say that “denial” is a river in Egypt. Unfortunately most of those people are in fact living in denial (hope they don’t drown in it).

My grandfather had a saying, “It doesn’t affect me – affect me – affect me …” He would use it when there was some self-denial going on. The point being that we could claim something had nothing to do with us, when in fact its effects were profound enough to cause serious dysfunction to be occurring. Denying the truth did not negate its effects.

The greatest sickness of man is the fact that our sin has separated us from God. Denying that reality does not negate the devastating effects of the separation. Nothing can be truly right when we are denied the relationship with our Creator for which we were created.

There is great power in finding the relief of guilt coming from the forgiveness of God. He will not offer that relief until we confess the sin.

Amnesty International, which formally announced two weeks ago a new worldwide policy backing women's right to abortion in some cases, is being charged with having "duped" pro-life pop stars who contributed their time and talents to a CD released to raise money by the anti-torture group for victims of violence in Darfur.

Vladimir Bukovsky, who spent nearly 12 years as a political detainee in the Soviet Union and who was adopted by Amnesty in the 1970s as a prisoner of conscience after he was committed to a psychiatric institution, is bewildered by the organization's new position.

"Why are they making policy about abortion? They should stick to working for human rights abuses. This is being driven by political correctness," he told the Times.

NEAR KARMAH, Iraq (August 19, 2007) – Without question, the desert can be a barren, unforgiving place.

the longing for “green” among Battalion Landing Team 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines personnel has been pacified with the chance growth of a tiny green plant.

The plant was noticed by Marines Aug. 14, following a mortar attack on the base. In the confusing aftermath and struggle to get protective gear on, a voice was heard the chaos: “Hey, is that a plant?”

“Whoa, there’s a plant growing over there!”

A small green stalk with two little leaves on top, the plant has yet to be identified

Perhaps a sunflower or tobacco plant, as the ground of some living areas are littered with. Maybe even a kool-aid plant, because it sprouted directly beneath a box of powdered drink mix. More likely, however, it is a watermelon vine, planted by a Marine discarding the seed while enjoying the fruit (which locals here sell at marketplaces).

“That thing just gives me hope!” exclaimed one Marine.

I just miss green.”

- U.S. troops serving in Iraq will have a little more protection soon, as two of the military's newest armored vehicles are on their way to the theater.

It typically takes two days to airlift the MRAPs to Iraq

As of Aug. 9, Transportation Command had shipped 701 MRAPs and MRAP-like vehicles to the Central Command area, Ms. Bauer said. The command will continue to ship the vehicles as military commanders in theater request them, she said.

The troops who participated in loading the vehicles yesterday told local media that they feel their job is important, because the MRAPs have been proven to save lives in combat. "It's absolutely critical. It saves lives every day when they have them," Air Force Master Sgt. Jared Breyer, with the 437th Airlift Wing, told ABC News.

probable cause statement picks up the coroner's conclusion that there was no dirt on the hands or under the fingernails of the deceased. Yet what is left out is that the deceased was wearing gloves at the time of the incident

Discovery Channel team calls it quits, closing the Armstrong era

Citing fractious leadership in the sport, constant doping allegations and the struggles of finding a new sponsor, Armstrong and the owners of his former Discovery Channel team said Friday the squad will disband after this season.

Armstrong said it was the perfect time to go out on top: Discovery's Alberto Contador of Spain won the team's eighth Tour de France title in nine years last month.

The decision shuts down the sport's only elite professional team based in the United States. Armstrong retired from riding in 2005 but remained a visible co-owner of the team operated by Tailwind Sports.

Discovery will still ride in this year's Tour of Spain and the Tour of Missouri, but the shutdown means Contador, Leipheimer and the 25 other riders must find new teams for 2008.
