The head of the engineer science and mechanics department says two professors were among the 32 people gunned down by a lone gunman, who then took his own life.

One of the professors was Liviu Librescu, a Romanian who was known internationally for his research in aeronautical engineering.

Engineering department chief Ishwar Puri says Librescu's research made aircraft better.

Another professor killed was Kevin Granata. He conducted orthopedic research in hospitals before coming to Tech.

Puri says Granata was one of the top five biomechanics researchers in the country working on movement dynamics in cerebral palsy.

The third profesor killed is Professor G.V. Loganathan, a professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

N. Korea May Shut Down Nuclear Reactor!

clipper's remarks: NOTE: I believe the way this works is that the older nuclear warheads (using uranium instead of plutonium) used basically nuclear waste Uranium-238 (or was it -235?) as the primary ingredient for fission, so them having a working nuclear reactor means they're producing all thsi refinable uranium which they can then use to make nuclear armaments. Obviously, we want them to have nuclear power, just not nuclear bombs. We used to have their waste storage compartment on their nuclear power facilities locked up but in defiance of the UN, a couple years ago, or a year ago, they uncovered that waste storage compartment, making their intentions and abilities clear.
I'm a bit fuzzy on the details as I'm not a huge history buff, but I think that's about how it goes.

North Korea may be preparing to shut down its main nuclear reactor, news reports said Tuesday, renewing hopes that Pyongyang will comply with a disarmament agreement days after it missed a deadline to shutter the facility.

The Yongbyon reactor was still in operation, but there was a high possibility that movement of cars and people at the site seen in satellite photos could be linked to a shutdown, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported, citing an unnamed intelligence official. The Dong-a Ilbo daily carried a similar report.

An official at the National Intelligence Service, South Korea's main spy agency, told The Associated Press they were "following and analyzing some peculiar movements" around the reactor in North Korea, without elaborating. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing policy.

Margie Steiner was known here as a tough landlord with a special loathing for drugs and drug dealers. Now she stands accused of peddling crack cocaine out of her own home.

She bears a prominent south Mobile County name, yet carries a complicated family history that draws strong reactions in this working-class fishing community.

She has maintained several dilapidated rental houses that some might consider substandard, but she appears to command the respect of her down-on-their-luck tenants.

Last month's cocaine arrest caused shock locally both because of Steiner's age -- 81 -- and because police said few people had been more vocal or persistent over the years in voicing their disgust at drugs. Along with Steiner, police also arrested her daughter, Rhonda Tate, and her daughter's friend, Hue Van Tran.

The on-again, off-again Google Phone rumors just got a healthy stir by Digitimes. The Taiwanese tech rag says that HTC is building the phone with initial shipments set to hit by the "end of 2007" -- globally in 2008. They cite "handset component makers" as their source. The phones will feature Texas Instruments' 3G platform with EDGE and of course built-in G-Mail and Google Maps. Unfortunately, they will not be GPS enabled. The handsets are also said to sport both Google and carrier branding with "sources" claiming that European's Orange might be the first carrier to see the hotness. Digitimes doesn't have the best track record with rumors so please everybody... exhale and let's wait for secondary confirmation.

The Supreme Court upheld the nationwide ban on a controversial abortion procedure Wednesday, handing abortion opponents the long- awaited victory they expected from a more conservative bench.

The 5-4 ruling said the Partial Birth Abortion Ban Act that Congress passed and President Bush signed into law in 2003 does not violate a woman's constitutional right to an abortion.

The opponents of the act "have not demonstrated that the Act would be unconstitutional in a large fraction of relevant cases," Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion.

The decision pitted the court's conservatives against its liberals, with President Bush's two appointees, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito, siding with the majority.

It was the first time the court banned a specific procedure in a case over how—not whether—to perform an abortion.
