Earth Day Celebrated Around the Web

Today is April 22nd which means it’s Earth Day in many countries around the World. It all started in 1970 when the first Earth Day was celebrated to coincide with the environmental movement. Around the web you’ll find a handful of different sites celebrating the day by changing their logo. Social Web Browser Flock even launched a new “Eco-edition” of their browser just in time for the day. It’s got lots of green and comes with some pre-loaded content for those that are conscious of the environment.

Yahoo, Time Warner closing in on AOL deal: source

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc and Time Warner Inc are "closing in" on a deal where Yahoo would merge with Time Warner's AOL Internet unit, brushing aside Microsoft's bid for Yahoo, a source familiar with the talks said on Wednesday.

The source confirmed a Wall Street Journal story saying Yahoo would receive a cash investment from Time Warner in exchange for a 20 percent stake in the combined Yahoo-AOL business. The deal would exclude AOL's fading dial-up Internet access business and value AOL at about $10 billion.

A deal with Time Warner and AOL would be part of a multi-pronged strategy by Yahoo in which it would outsource Web search advertising operations to Google Inc, the source said.

Separately, The New York Times reported that Microsoft and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp are in negotiations on making a joint bid for Yahoo. That merger would join Yahoo, Microsoft Corp's MSN and News Corp's MySpace, the paper said.

In the wake of Microsoft's proposed $44 bil takeover of Yahoo (and all the subsequent chatter), I've updated my Who Owns What chart. Because I think this topic is so important to all journalists, regardless of whether they work in traditional media or even in the United States, I'm going to launch an RSS feed and a widget soon that will roll constant updates on who owns what.

Microsoft Puts Up $44.6 Billion Bid To Buy Yahoo

Washington (dbTechno) - Microsoft Corporation has announced that they have proposed $44.6 billion to take over the internet giant Yahoo.

Yahoo shareholders, under the deal which has been proposed by Microsoft, would be able to take cash in the sale of Yahoo to Microsoft, or shares of Microsoft stock.

The proposal on the table from Microsoft would give shareholders a 62% premium over the current Yahoo market value, which is quite impressive.

Microsoft announce offer of $44.6 Billion for Yahoo: Is this a good idea?

Microsoft have just announced what was a rumor for a while a formal offer of $44.6 Billion for Yahoo, the proposal to Yahoo’s board of directors represents $31 per share which is a 62% premium over yesterday’s closing price or $44.6 Billion.

CEO Steve Ballmer said “We have great respect for Yahoo!, and together we can offer an increasingly exciting set of solutions for consumers, publishers and advertisers while becoming better positioned to compete in the online services market.”

Well apparently this amazing deal was put out in a letter which was sent to Yahoo’s board by Ballmer, the letter did confirm that the two major companies have indeed been discussing the topic since late 2006 and it also appears to be a direct response to the Google threat which was outlined in the following paragraph.

The question here is “Do you think it is a good idea Microsoft buying Yahoo?

Yahoo! Mail just celebrated its tenth birthday, and it's grown into a healthy Web 2.0 application, complete with drag-and-drop functionality, right-clickable menus, tabbed message windows, RSS integration, and a reading pane à la Outlook. The finally released, out-of-beta version is almost identical to Yahoo! Mail (beta 3) which we reviewed back in March, but with a few key differences. The major addition is support for sending and receiving SMS messages and Windows Live Messenger IMs within the mail interface. Further, some features have been refined, and reliability is improved.
