With a wave, a wink and a bow, President Bush became the conductor-in-chief when the US Marine Band struck up at the White House Correspondents' Association annual dinner over the weekend.

Noting the absence of the presidential rivals hoping to succeed him, Mr Bush said: “Hillary Clinton couldn't get in because of sniper fire and Senator Obama's at church.”

The former First Lady falsely claimed to have landed in Bosnia under fire. Mr Obama has been embarrassed by the incendiary sermons of his former pastor.

Of the Republican John McCain, Mr Bush said: “He probably wanted to distance himself from me a little bit. You know, he’s not alone. Jenna’s moving out too.” Mr Bush’s daughter is about to get married.

Yeltsin remembered on anniversary of his death

The highest echelons of Russian dignitaries have been paying tribute to the late President Boris Yeltsin, who died a year ago today.

They went to the Novodevichy cemetery in Moscow, where a monument was unveiled to the man who made sure that the old Soviet Union was buried. His actions infuriated some, and delighted others. The man who succeeded him, President Vladimir Putin paid tribute saying: "It's been a year since since Boris Nikolayevich Yeltsin died. He was the first president of Russia, and one of the most brilliant politicians of the 20th century. He had enormous influence, not only on the development of our country, but on the course of world history."

Now Carla Bruni has been romantically linked to France’s 52-year-old president, Nicolas Sarkozy.

Mr. Sarkozy, who often says that he is proud to be called “Sarko l’Americain,” was photographed with his “friend,” as the French news media are calling her, on Saturday and Sunday at the most American of venues: Disneyland Paris.

The Élyseé Palace declined to comment on the matter, but Christophe Barbier, the editor of the weekly magazine L’Express, which broke the story on its Web site on Sunday, told French television that he spoke with Ms. Bruni about the subject.

“She confirmed the relationship,” Mr. Barbier told LCI television on Monday. “We must now wait and see how far the president will go in presenting Carla Bruni officially. We will see if he includes her on trips and if one day he gives her official functions.”

Putin backs Medvedev as successor

MOSCOW, Russia (AP) -- President Vladimir Putin expressed support Monday for First Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev as his successor, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported.

There have been months of intense speculation on whom Putin would support to run in the March 2 presidential elections -- along with the wider question of what Putin himself will do once he steps down.

Putin had long been seen as trying to choose between Medvedev, a business-friendly lawyer and board chairman of state natural gas giant Gazprom, and Sergei Ivanov, another first deputy premier who built up a stern and hawkish reputation while defense minister.

Putin made the statement in a meeting with representatives of the United Russia party -- which is his power base and dominates parliament -- and of three other parties. The parties told Putin they all supported Medvedev.

"I completely and fully support this proposal," Putin said, according to the ITAR-Tass news agency.

TBILISI, Georgia (AP) — The U.S.-backed leader of Georgia appears to have faced down the worst crisis of his presidency: defusing a standoff with the opposition by calling an early election while maintaining a state of emergency that has silenced dissent.

Criticized at home and abroad for a violent crackdown on anti-government protesters this week, President Mikhail Saakashvili cast the early election as a concession.

But the Jan. 5 poll date leaves the fractured opposition little time to capitalize on a groundswell of public discontent. And two opposition leaders who could have seriously challenged Saakashvili will be just a few months shy of the minimum campaign age of 35.

Along with his election announcement, Saakashvili also promised Thursday to quickly lift the state of emergency. But Friday he easily won parliamentary approval to extend it for up to 15 days. This will keep nongovernment television news off the air, making it harder for the opposition to mount an effective campaign.

Tbilisi - Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili imposed a 15-day state of emergency after clashes between police and anti-government protesters he accuses Russia of backing.

Part of the centre of Tbilisi was cordoned off on Thursday after the pro-Western Saakashvili restricted public gatherings and the private media following a day of running battles between police and protesters calling for the president's resignation.

Police fired tear gas, rubber bullets and water cannon at the protesters and 486 people were hospitalised after Wednesday's clashes, the health ministry said.

Saakashvili's government also expelled several Russian diplomats. Russia's Interfax news agency said three diplomats would be ordered out.

TBILISI (Reuters) - Thousands of Georgians plan to challenge President Mikhail Saakashvili on Friday by taking part in what could be the biggest opposition protests since the Rose Revolution demonstrations that swept him to power.

Saakashvili's opponents say tens of thousands of people will turn out for a rally outside parliament in Tbilisi, where similar-sized crowds drove President Eduard Shevardnadze from office in 2003 after a rigged parliamentary election.
