Sean from Microsoft came by just a few minutes ago to drop off a cake for the Internet Explorer team. As people may recall, the IE team sent Mozilla a cake after Firefox 2 shipped and it seems that they wanted to continue the tradition.

Sean and I used to work together and I happened to be the one that saw him as he came in so he presented the cake to me and John Lilly and we then took it around to staff. I think people found it amusing and the “E” portion of the Firefox 2 cake, which is preserved in our freezer to this day, was pulled out for comparison. I must say, the new cake is much nicer (and much less brown) than the old one.

Firefox Logo Spied In Deep Space

One of these is a photograph taken by the Hubble space telescope on December 17, 2002, featuring the variable star V838 Monocerotis. The other is the same photograph overlaid with a familiar logo. Can you tell which is which?

Below is another photo of the same star, from the Wikipedia entry on V838 Monocerotis. If the above photo has been photoshopped to look more like the Firefox logo, the editing seems minimal: it's been rotated relative to the photo below, and some of the gas cloud may have been edited out around the "tail" of the fox.

If you've got a link to the original Hubble photo used above, let us know in the comments so we can compare. UPDATE: An eagle-eyed commenter, Wevah, spotted the original version of the Firefox-like nova photo on Wikipedia. It looks like the only modification was to rotate the image. It must be a sign from the stars!

Relaunch of Mozilla Firefox’s visit share in the European countries at the end of 2007

Mozilla Firefox’s visit share for the average of European countries of the XiTi perimeter increased by 5 points between December 2006 and December 2007.

Between November and December 2007, Mozilla Firefox’s visit share increases in 90% of the European countries studied, Finland still in the lead

The leading trio in visit share remains unchanged: Finland with 45.4% precedes Slovenia (44.6%) and Poland (42.4%).

Firefox 3 Add-On Solves Memory Woes

The first Firefox 3 beta is just around the corner and promises a number of enhancements, including a reduction of the notoriously large memory footprint. We've written extensively about Firefox's memory problems in the past and while Firefox 3 will address some of the issues, it won't solve the problem for everyone.

Part of Firefox’s memory overhead is by design. Whenever you visit a page in Firefox, the browser caches it for some time. If you frequently go back and forth between pages this cuts down on load time, but the trade off is increased memory usage.

RAMback simply adds a menu item to the tools menu (pictured above) that allows you to quickly dump your caches. If you assign a keyboard shortcut to it, you’ve got a quick, simple way to dump caches whenever you need to.

Auto-Hide Your Firefox Bookmarks Toolbar

Reader Andy writes in with a tweak that makes the toolbar hide automatically, unless you mouse over it (like auto-hiding your Windows taskbar or Mac Dock.) To turn on auto-hiding you have to edit your Firefox profile's copy of userChrome.css Here's the code you need:

Safari beats IE, Firefox in speed trials

October 24, 2007 (Computerworld) -- Safari is faster than rival browsers from Microsoft Corp. and Mozilla Corp., a North Carolina Web testing firm said today -- putting proof to Apple Inc.'s June boast that its browser was the quickest.

Michael Czeiszperger, general manager of Web Performance Inc. in Durham, N.C., used his free time -- and some of WPI's tools -- to measure how fast the Windows versions of Apple's Safari, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7) and Mozilla's Firefox 2 grabbed pages.

"I noticed that Apple used canned benchmarks, not actual load time measurements," said Czeiszperger, explaining why he timed the browsers.
