Giant Dinosaur Skeleton Up For Auction

A 65-million-year-old dinosaur is going under the hammer at an auction in Paris.

The monster-size skeleton of a triceratops is expected to sell for up to 500,000 euros when it goes on sale at a Christie's auction next month.

At 7.5 metres high and weighing in at nearly two tonnes, the fossil would make a sizeable contribution to any enthusiast's home.

The skull of the triceratops, which weighs 200 kg and measures 1.7 metres, was difficult to get through the doors of the auction house because of its size.

She was bought by The Field Museum in Chicago for more than £4m - a record for a fossil.

Jeweler Steve Quick is the latest company to create a diamond Christmas tree. The tree is packed with five pounds of solid 18K gold and a coating of 200 carats of diamonds that offers a feel of sparkling snow. The summit of the tree is festooned with 4.52 carat round brilliant cut diamond set stone fixed on the base of a platinum star. It demands a biting price of $500,000.

Steve Quick Jewelers anticipates the tree to be worth $500,000, which is of course less than the $1.8 million diamond bejeweled tree. The tree would be exhibited on 7 December at the Steve Quick store in Chicago and is planned to stay there all through the season. But surely this tree is meant to be sold off and on 17 December it will reach the auction block at eBay. The revenue generated would entirely be donated to the American Cancer Society. Folks! If this is a bit too much for your budget then you can eye mini models of the tree in authentic silver or gold-plated retailed at $25 or in 14K gold for $195.

Lloyd Webber Foundation Wins Dismissal of Picasso Art Lawsuit

Nov. 20 (Bloomberg) -- The Andrew Lloyd Webber Art Foundation, owner of a Pablo Picasso painting, can't be sued by a German collector who claimed the Nazis forced his relative to sell the work, a New York court said.

The theater impresario's foundation, and auction house Christie's International, withdrew Picasso's $60 million portrait from sale a year ago after Julius Schoeps said it was forcibly sold by his great uncle, Berlin banker Paul von Mendelssohn- Bartholdy. The foundation said in court that Schoeps couldn't sue for restitution because he wasn't appointed to represent his relative's estate, and the judge agreed.

Christie's, the world's largest auction house, had valued the 1903 Picasso painting, ``Portrait de Angel Fernandez de Soto,'' at $40 million to $60 million, promising the foundation a minimum price whether it sold or not.

The Lloyd Webber foundation couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

The case was Schoeps vs. Andrew Lloyd Webber Art Foundation, 116768/06.

Some art you buy for its beauty, some art you buy for investment and some you buy for a certain sense of nostalgia. This one, the first illustration from the first Playboy magazine, definitely falls into the third category. The first Playboy cartoon in 1953 by Ben Denison, marks the start of a tradition that has gone on to include artists such as Eldon Dedini, Jules Feiffer, Shel Silverstein and Gahan Wilson, It is being auctioned off by Heritage Auctions in Dallas, Texas on December 12. The gouache on illustration board measures approximately 11" x 8-1/2" and is estimated to sell for $12,000 - $18,000.

The 4.5m (14.7ft), 20-step section, which once linked the tower's second and third levels, is expected to fetch up to 30,000 euros ($44,000; £21,000).

It was one of 24 sections removed in 1983 to make room for new lifts.

The 324m tower, built by Gustave Eiffel for the 1889 Universal Exhibition, is the world's most popular monument, drawing six million visitors a year.

It was the tallest building in the world at the time of its construction.

The auctioneer, Remi Ader, said it would be difficult to estimate what its sale might eventually raise.

"I said 20,000 to 30,000 euros ($29,000-44,000), but that's in theory because at that price I know that five, 10, perhaps 20 people are interested," he told the Associated Press.

Potential bidders have been warned the staircase section weighs 700kg.

Churchill painting to fetch 'at least' £500,000

A painting by Sir Winston Churchill, given to US President Harry Truman, is expected to fetch at least £500,000 at auction.

The work, Marrakech, an oil on canvas, shows the Atlas mountains as a backdrop to one of the Moroccan city's gates. It is thought to have been painted in 1948 and presented to Truman three years later, soon after Churchill, a keen amateur painter, was re-elected prime minister.

It hung in Truman's living room until his death in 1972. His daughter, Margaret Truman Daniel, is selling it for financial reasons.

Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo's ``Tres Personajes,'' a 1970 painting vibrating with reds, yellows and purples, may fetch as much as $1 million at a Sotheby's auction on Nov. 20, the work's first public viewing since Elizabeth Gibson spied it in a mound of garbage on a Manhattan sidewalk.

Gibson, a tall, blond 53-year-old resident of the Upper West Side, went out for a cup of coffee on a Saturday morning in 2003. She spotted a large painting poking out from among the garbage bags left on the sidewalk on West 72nd Street. In her pre-caffeinated haze, she kept walking.
