Sean from Microsoft came by just a few minutes ago to drop off a cake for the Internet Explorer team. As people may recall, the IE team sent Mozilla a cake after Firefox 2 shipped and it seems that they wanted to continue the tradition.

Sean and I used to work together and I happened to be the one that saw him as he came in so he presented the cake to me and John Lilly and we then took it around to staff. I think people found it amusing and the “E” portion of the Firefox 2 cake, which is preserved in our freezer to this day, was pulled out for comparison. I must say, the new cake is much nicer (and much less brown) than the old one.

Pop star Kylie Minogue's singing career began with I Should Be So Lucky, recorded in 1987 and a number one hit the year after.

In 2001 Kylie encouraged fans to dance like robots as Can't Get You Out of My Head topped the UK chart and revived her popularity in the US.

After releasing a greatest hits album, Kylie began her Showgirl tour in 2005, but it was cut short two months in, when the singer was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Nearly a year later, Kylie used her website to post the first pictures of herself following chemotherapy.

Following her recovery, Kylie resumed her Showgirl tour in Australia in November 2006. Now having released her 10th studio album, X, she is currently in the middle of a European tour.

Tawny owl flies into record books

A record-breaking tawny owl has astounded experts by becoming a mother again at the ripe old age of 21.

The bird, which is nesting in Kershope Forest, Cumbria, was ringed in 1987 and has reached four times the average life expectancy of a tawny in the wild.

Last year she entered the record books as the oldest breeding female of her kind in the wild in the UK.

If the owl can survive until October, she will become the oldest tawny owl ever recorded in Britain.

The record is currently held by a male found freshly dead in North Yorkshire in 1988 aged 21 years, 5 months and 13 days.

After a good deal of--ahem--lively discussion, the editors at PC World have completed this year's list of the 100 best technology products available today. How did we do it? After nominating hundreds of devices, apps, sites, and services we knew to be good, we rated each one on its design, functionality, performance, and impact; the ones garnering the highest total scores made our list. Note that we chose not to rate products specifically on their price or value, focusing instead on their overall quality. After the scoring was over and the dust had cleared, we had a list that served, among other things, to remind us of what an exciting time in tech this truly is, with game-changing product development happening on many fronts.

Sydney Pollack

The US actor and director Sydney Pollack has died at his home in Los Angeles, aged 73. One early success was The Game in 1966, for which he won an Emmy.

He made his name directing such stars as Robert Redford (left), and critics praised his production of passionate and intelligent films that respected their audiences.

He won acclaim for directing Paul Newman in Absence of Malice, and earned Oscar nominations for directing Dustin Hoffman in the cross-dressing comedy Tootsie, in which he played Hoffman's agent.

Pollack made a guest appearance in one of the last episodes of the cult US television series The Sopranos, and appeared in his last film, Michael Clayton, in 2007 alongside George Clooney.

A 13 year old from Texas who stole his Dad's credit card and ordered two hookers from an escort agency, has today been convicted of fraud and given a three year community order.

Ralph Hardy, a 13 year old from Newark, Texas confessed to ordering an extra credit card from his father's existing credit card company, and took his friends on a $30,000 spending spree, culminating in playing "Halo" on an Xbox with a couple of hookers in a Texas motel.

The escort girls who were released without charge, told the arresting officers something was up when the kids said they would rather play Xbox than get down to business.

When police arrived at the motel they found $3,000 in cash, numerous electronic gadgets, an Xbox video console with numerous games, and the two local escort girls.

Russian Communist Party Wants To Ban "Indiana Jones"

Members of Russia's Communist party are outraged about the group's portrayal in new movie Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull - and are calling for the film to be banned in the country.

Members of the party have spoken out against the film - insisting it will give young people a warped view of history - and called for the movie to be banned to prevent "ideological sabotage."

Communist party chief Sergei Malinkovich says, "Our movie-goers are teenagers who are completely unaware of what happened in 1957. They will go to the cinema and will be sure that in 1957 we made trouble for the United States and almost started a nuclear war. It's rubbish. In 1957 the Communist party did not run with crystal skulls throughout the U.S. Why should we agree to that sort of lie and let the West trick our youth?"

Tiger resurrection

DNA from the extinct Tasmanian tiger has been 'resurrected' after being successfully inserted into a mouse embryo.

Scientists from Australia and the US believe the breakthrough could lead to other extinct species being brought back to life.

Writing in the science journal PLoS ONE the researchers hailed the world's first-ever instance of DNA from an extinct species inducing a functional response in another living organism.

The Tasmanian tiger, otherwise known as thylacine, was hunted to extinction at the turn of the last century.

The last thlyacine died in captivity in the 1930s, but pouch young and adult tissues were preserved in alcohol in several museums, allowing scientists to isolate DNA from the 100-year-old ethanol-fixed specimens.
