Fact Check: McCain, Obama Charges and Countercharges

ABC News independently checked some of the claims made by John McCain and Barack Obama during the debate tonight.

McCain charged that Obama had the second highest donations of anyone in the Senate from troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

TRUE.

McCain has received $21,550 from employees (nothing from PACs) since 1989

McCain charged that Obama was guilty of driving up pork barrel spending

TRUE

AND FALSE

But if McCain misspoke and meant to say that Obama requested nearly a billion in earmarks, he's not even close. According to the Citizens Against Government Waste's annual Pig Book for 2008 Appropriations, Obama requested 53 earmarks worth a total of $97.4 million.

Obama's Real Problem With Ayers

Election '08: At an education forum in Venezuela, Bill Ayers showed the real issue is not his terrorist past. It's the socialist revolutionary agenda that he and Barack Obama want to impose on the nation's schools.

"School reformer" is how Brokaw identified the co-founder of the Weather Underground, the radical organization that, among other activities, bombed government buildings, banks, police departments and military bases in the early 1970s.

Yeah, right: Ayers is a school reformer in the same sense, as City Journal's Sol Stern put it, as Joe Stalin was an agricultural reformer.

Is ACORN Stealing The Election?

Election Fraud: A radical group Barack Obama used to work for is committing voter-registration fraud in several states, ahead of the election. What does Obama know about this scam?

In Missouri, one ACORN registrant named Monica Rays showed up on no less than eight forms, all bearing the same signature.

Suspicious election officials sent letters to some 5,000 ACORN registrants in St. Louis, asking the letter recipients to contact them.

Fewer than 40 reponded.

In Kansas City, 15,000 registrations have been questioned, and last year four ACORN employees were indicted for fraud.

ACORN has also been registering convicted felons — including inmates — in Florida and other battleground states. ACORN boasts registering a record 1.5 million new voters so far this election.

For starters, Obama paid ACORN, which has endorsed him for president, $800,000 to register new voters, payments his campaign failed to accurately report.

Pin Tail On Donkey

The Debate: John McCain rightly laid the blame for the economic crisis on Fannie and Freddie, and the blame for that on the Democrats. But he missed opportunities and left much too much on the podium.

The blame for the most serious economic crisis in recent memory should be laid squarely at the feet of Barack Obama and the Democrats. He and they should be denied the reins of economic power.

A wildlife group's ad attacks Palin for supporting the shooting of wolves from airplanes. She does, but there's more to it than that.

Alaskan officials call it "predator control," not aerial hunting, and use it to keep the populations of moose and caribou high for subsistence hunters.

The program is limited to just 9 percent of the state's land mass, or five of 26 Department of Fish and Game districts.

Far from being endangered, as they are in the Lower 48 states, gray wolves number between 7,000 and 11,000 in Alaska.

The child of academics, raised in a liberal household and educated in the liberal arts, Brooks has written a book that concludes religious conservatives donate far more money than secular liberals to all sorts of charitable activities, irrespective of income.

When it comes to helping the needy, Brooks writes: "For too long, liberals have been claiming they are the most virtuous members of American society. Although they usually give less to charity, they have nevertheless lambasted conservatives for their callousness in the face of social injustice."

A majority of voters (52%) continue to believe the United States and its allies are winning the war on terror, and nearly as many (48%) say America is safer today than it was before the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Just 19% think the terrorists are winning the war on Iraq, and 24% think neither side is ahead.

So effectively we see that Nancy Pelosi is in the pocket of alternative energy companies. It’s basically the same claim being made by Pelosi and other Democrats against Republicans. And it’s just as bad as what they say the result is with Republicans.

Speaker Pelosi has walled-off any discussion of domestic drilling for oil.

Effectively that means that Speaker Pelosi wants alternative energy to get more money to earn more money for herself. The higher the cost for oil, the better her alternative energy stocks will do. And the American public be damned.

Plenty of Republicans think the news media is in the tank for Barack Obama, but a Rasmussen Reports survey found that plenty of other Americans agree: “49% of voters believe most reporters will try to help the Democrat with their coverage, up from 44% a month ago. Just 14% believe most reporters will try to help McCain win, little changed from 13% a month ago. Just one voter in four (24%) believes that most reporters will try to offer unbiased coverage.”

Nevada Raids State ACORN Headquarters

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Nevada authorities seized records Tuesday from a group they accused of submitting fraudulent voter-registration forms - including for the starting lineup of the Dallas Cowboys.

According to its national Web site, the group has registered 1.3 million people nationwide for the Nov. 4 election. It has encountered complaints of fraud stemming from registration efforts in Wisconsin, North Carolina, New Mexico, Michigan, Ohio and Missouri.

Brave movie serves up silly jokes with a serious point

Americans numbed by the daily barrage of politics-as-usual are about to be awakened by some new fireworks - Hollywood-style. Imagine documentary filmmaker Michael Moore and director David Zucker (Airplane! and The Naked Gun) in the center ring, and you begin to get the idea.

An American Carol may not be The Best Movie You Ever Saw, but it's radical in its assault on the left wing; it's brave given the risk of peer ridicule and the potential for career suicide. It will probably be panned by jaded reviewers who will point out its flaws. But the film makes a serious and necessary point that can't be missed amid the laughter and the outrage: America is not the enemy.
