Do you have experiences of bad coders?

Having experience of using local and outsourced programmers:

Never EVER believe the following from a programmer:

1. Examples of work* (unless on the site of someone you know and they’ve been openly using it for at least 3-6 months)
2. Testimonials (unless from someone you know - see 1 above)
3. Reviews (unless from someone you know - see 1 above)
4. Sites they’ve developed (see 1 above)
5. Certification of ownership/rights (coders can disappear overnight when they are found out)
6. Statistics (PR can be forged, traffic can easily be diverted, forum posts/comments/testimonials can be forged)

My experiences:

Good coders cost good money.
Almost all of the time, when starting a fledgling project, money is tight and you have a deadline - some coders take advantage of this.
Do as much of it yourself - within your capabilities - get your coder to do the coding part.

1. PDF files for online reading Users hate coming across a PDF file while browsing, because it breaks their flow. Even simple things like printing or saving documents are difficult because standard browser commands don't work. Layouts are often optimized for a sheet of paper, which rarely matches the size of the user's browser window. Bye-bye smooth scrolling. Hello tiny fonts.

1.1 Principles
Conquer the world by conquering each country on the map. A country has a morale which aﬀects battle outcomes, it has armies and one owner. Besides that, every country generates income to let you buy more armies in one of your countries. The income depends on the number of neighbours a coutry has (and of course on game speed and if there is a factor set that multiplies all income.

1.2 Basic actions
Invest (buy armies), move or attack is more or less all you do when youre playing WorDoG. Please notice that after moving to or attacking a country the target country only oﬀers limited options for a certain time (e.g. no immediate attack after movement).

1.3 Politics
Games can run with or without politics. If the creator disabled politcs, the gameplay just consists of buying, moving and attacking. Diplomacy lets the players sign in¬dividual peace treaties for a certain time.

We live in extremely dangerous times.

As a continuation of the wars waged in Afghanistan & Iraq, the Bush administration is now formulating plans to bomb Iran.

This is a particularly worrying development, not just for the security of America, but also for the families of US soldiers, and especially for the opportunity of peace in the Middle East.

Such action would inevitably worsen the already hostile situation in Iraq, weakening diplomacy & strengthening extremism.

Led by the administration, Iran has been aggresively bullied and coerced economically, militarily, and politically, through the use of sanctions, torture, and political scapegoating, notably resulting in a negative media campaign linking the country with WMD... just as Bush did before the war in Iraq.

How to get listed on Yahoo and All The Web

Someone just asked me “How do I get my site listed on Yahoo and All The Web?”

My Answer:

All The Web (ATW) is driven by Yahoo. I find it easier to find the links to get your site submitted by going to alltheweb.com and clicking on the Submit Site link at the bottom - then following it through to the Yahoo Free Link submission page.

1. You have to be registered as a Yahoo user.
2. You can submit your RSS feed or sitemap at the same time.

Little tips:

Be ready for the spider when it comes crawling - don’t have any ‘under construction’ or ‘coming soon’ or stuff like that.
Go find a site that is listed on either ATW or Yahoo and either post in their forum or make a relevant comment - don’t go posting spam!
If you do post something on someone elses site - make sure your link to your site is in your signature
If you like a post on a site - don’t just comment it - add value - Post something interesting on your site then link back to it on their site.

Believe it or not, you don’t actually have to directly submit your site to a search engine. More often than not it will come and find you from links on other sites.

They find you either from links on another site (this is called ‘organic’ traffic) or a direct submission to the search engines database using an ‘add url’ link on their site. You can also use a service or a piece of software that submits you to several (or thousands) search engines at once. Please do watch out for some directories as they tend to either send you spam themselves or sell your email address to others to spam you.

What types of places are there to submit my website?
Directories (free and paid). Search Engines. Individual sites. Free For All (FFA) pages.

To get people to visit your site, to read your message, to buy your products they need to know where to find you. People need to know your website address, your URL or be able to follow a hyper link to your site.

Statistically most people visit web sites by searching for them in a search engine. The funny thing is, that even if someone knows your URL or website address, they still type it into a search engine. Almost everyone has either a search engine as their homepage or they use the one provided by their internet provider and that almost always has a search box provided by a search engine.

You need to get your web site indexed by the search engines so people can find you!

Been Helping someone out on a site for Teen Webmasters

Being the kind soul that I am - I’ve been helping out (on the backend) of a site specifically for teen webmasters. I wasn’t aware that there was a problem with acceptance.
