According to Wikipedia: Several ideas from the original conception of the film were dropped before production. During the opening theme, the film was supposed to include clips from all the movies mentioned in the song "Science Fiction Double Feature".[8] Producers discovered quickly that obtaining the rights to all the various film clips would be very costly, and cut the idea.

I watched three fan clips using this idea and liked this one best.

On the Leanoard Lopate show today, I heard about this great sounding new television series on Thirteen/WNET, premiering tonight. It is called "Curious: Mind, Body, Planet, Universe," and episodes will be available online as well as broadcast on television. The creator's intent is to create a new kind of science show, one that is character driven, one without an authoritative voice over, one that is entertaining and accessible. Science should be 'as exciting as science fiction' says Hawking

CAMBRIDGE, England (AFP) — British astrophysicist Stephen Hawking revealed his desire on Monday to make "real science as exciting as science fiction" as he publicised a new book for children about the cosmos.

"George's Secret Key to the Universe", the first book in a planned trilogy, explains the workings of the solar system, asteroids, black holes -- one of Hawking's favourite topics -- and other celestial bodies with the help of a set of young heroes.

It will be released in French on Thursday, and in English a week later, and is set to be sold in 29 countries. The second book in the trilogy will be published next year.

"Our aim is to make real science as exciting as science fiction," Hawking said.

Asked about the choice facing the heroes in his book -- saving the world from global warming or finding another planet that is habitable for humans -- he said that, like George, he would opt to focus on both.

Over 1,000 Free Science Fiction Books To Read From Popular Authors

Being a science fiction fan, I finally had the chance to go through Cool Dog Ebooks section on science fiction books. They can be downloaded via through rapidshare. There are three parts that need to download, but be warned that if you are not a premium user you will need to wait at least 3 hours to download the next part. (Rapidshare is a free service, but they limit you on how much you can download). When you have completed in downloading the three parts, you will need to click Part 1 to unzip the files. I personally use Winace to open my files, but Winzip is just as good.

The Science of Insulting Women

Under particular discussion is a pickup technique that Mystery advocates known as “negging” — a move that involves interjecting an insult during an initial conversation with a woman. The motivation behind the insult is, as Esquire’s A.J. Jacobs puts it, to “lower her self-esteem, thus making her more vulnerable to your advances.”

Meanwhile, the psychologists Steve Stewart-Williams and William F. McKibbin have been researching the topic of men insulting women, publishing a study called “Why Do Men Insult Their Intimate Partners?” in the July Journal of Personality and Individual Differences.

Their first set of data consisted of a survey of 245 men

Each man was asked to record how often he insulted his female partner in the course of a month, choosing from a list of 47 insults divided into four categories

A second set of data came from 372 women who were asked to detail the number and type of insults they received from their partners, as well as the males’ mate-retention behavior rates.

New studies have found that people tidy up more thoroughly when there’s a faint tang of cleaning liquid in the air; they become more competitive if there’s a briefcase in sight, or more cooperative if they glimpse words like “dependable” and “support” — all without being aware of the change, or what prompted it.

In describing my own research or cognitive science in general to people, the most difficult obstacle I would eventually encounter was the stubborn human belief that there was a independent entity — a free will — in charge of everything important that goes on in their brain. While science has been steadily dismantling this understandable misconception for decades, recent studies on subconscious social priming like these would have helped me demonstrate my point.

To be fair, it's more than a little disconcerting to realize what a messy mix of competing, semi-independent, multi-layered neural modules are responsible for producing our daily behavior.

Who’s Minding the Mind?

In a recent experiment, psychologists at Yale altered people’s judgments of a stranger by handing them a cup of coffee.

The study participants, college students, had no idea that their social instincts were being deliberately manipulated. On the way to the laboratory, they had bumped into a laboratory assistant, who was holding textbooks, a clipboard, papers and a cup of hot or iced coffee — and asked for a hand with the cup.

That was all it took: The students who held a cup of iced coffee rated a hypothetical person they later read about as being much colder, less social and more selfish than did their fellow students, who had momentarily held a cup of hot java.

Findings like this one, as improbable as they seem, have poured forth in psychological research over the last few years.
