Even though Fall doesn't officially begin until next week, the Christmas catalogs have already begun to arrive. While I get that Christmas trees aren't necessarily "Christian" — they can be a fun way to celebrate the otherwise cold and dark winter season with light and color — there are some extremely odd ornaments for sale in the new catalog from Bronner's. Oh, I'm not talking about the usual wacky stuff: Snowmen, moose, birds, dolphins, vintage cars, Santa drinking wine, Betty Boop, frogs getting married, pirate ships, Hello Kitty, unicorns. I'm talking about seriously crazy items that will make even the most traditional among you say, well, Christ. What is this holiday really all about? This is an odd tubular sculpture we saw in a park in New Zealand. You can actually wedge your whole body inside of it, and then tilt the sculpture from side to side. This allows you to peer at a very small circle of sky at any given time.

Much like those of us who frequent this blog, Kiwis appear to very easily amused by such things. Then again, we were the dumb Americans wedging ourselves inside of their art.

Showing skill possessed by watch-makers long before members of this ancient craft had advantages of modern tools, a collection of old timepieces owned by an eastern jeweler, provides a n interesting contrast with similar creations of a machine age. Many clocks were framed in queer human figures. One was cleverly made in a suit of armor that moved the hands around the chest and opened and closed the eyes and mouth, at every hour. After five and a half years of labor, one man completed an odd mechanical clock containing 298 moving figures, carved from oak with a penknife. They depict various historical scenes. Experts say that the watches in this display of mechanics of a past day are marvels of art and workmanship.

Although it seems a little morbid in a CSI kind of way, the Academy of Natural Sciences is displaying snips of hair from 12 former presidents — including an actual lock of George Washington’s splendid mane — over President’s Day weekend. The locks will be displayed in a scrapbook compiled by 19th-century Philadelphia attorney Peter Avrell Brown, who loved to collect all sorts of furry things, including animal fur and people’s hair, both presidential and civilian.

Brown acquired the hair by writing letters to the presidents’ families — apparently not an odd request in the 1850s, as the AP notes that family “hair albums” were very popular at the time — most of whom cheerfully replied by return post.

4 Maxi-Pads

Tape or Glue

Items to Embellish

Instructions:
You need four maxi pads to make a pair of slippers. Two of them get laid out flat in front of you, for the sole of the foot. The other two wrap around the toe area to form the top odf the slipper. Tape or glue each side of the top pieces to the bottom of the foot part.

Now you have a pair of slippers you can embellish. Decorate the tops with whatever you desire, charms, beads, silk flowers, etc.

Most Extraordinary Gravestone

A gravestone has been named one of the most extraordinary in Britain as part of a national search carried out by historians.

Researchers from the BBC's hit series Who Do You Think You Are? scoured the country looking for odd and bizarre gravestones and epitaphs, and named Phoebe Hessel as one of the most unusual.

Ms Hessel, who died on December 12 1821, was laid to rest at St Nicholas Churchyard, in Dyke Road, Brighton.

She not only fought in the army but lived to 108.

Her extraordinary life spanned the reigns of six monarchs. Ms Hessel served for many years in the army disguised as a man, and saw out her days entertaining Brightonians, and even the Prince Regent, with tales of her service and her injury at the Battle of Fontenoy.

Dr Richard Smart, director of the National Archive of Memorial Inscriptions, said: "Phoebe Hessel lived a charmed life - and has a lovely gravestone to prove it."
