Overcoming adversity through force is only half way winning the battle, but by overcoming adversity through love, is a complete victory. Let go of anger and resentment by writing a letter of forgiveness to a person who has hurt or wronged you. Inability to forgive is associated with persistent rumination or dwelling on revenge, while forgiving allows us to move on.

Forgiveness is a benefit to ourselves and not necessarily to the participant of the wrong doing. It allows us to let go of bad feelings, reclaiming our personal power and teaches us to look for positive opportunities in all situations. Practicing forgiveness takes time and effort, and does not happen overnight, as with anything of a self improvement nature. Learning to forgive can reduce stress, anger, depression, and lower blood pressure. Forgiveness is linked with higher self-esteem, better moods and happier relationships.

Some of the coolest things can be found by getting down to the ground and taking a close look at the tiny things that make up our natural world. The Hidden Forest aims to help you identify all the mosses, liverworts, and bryophytes you might come across.

Unlike other very good nature I.D. sites (such as What's That Bug?), The Hidden Forest gets all geeky and delves into the classification names and lineage of the different plants. (If you're into fungus, this is the site to visit.)

Right now, much of the content is centered on New Zealand flora, but there are plenty of US equivalents. You can spend time outdoors with your kids geocaching or animal tracking, or you can now go mold hunting.

Snail shell takes a weird turn

A newly discovered Malaysian snail has defied the established rules of growth and form by creating a home that twists in four independent directions

researchers searching the soils of Malaysia to catalogue the country's molluscs have found two species with even more twisting. They report the first of these, which they name Opisthostoma vermiculum or 'little worm', in Biology Letters this week

Marine molluscs often have complicated shells, which sometimes grow wildly without any clear coiling axes. But that does not go for land dwellers and the curvy shells of Opisthostoma vermiculum are remarkably consistent

To work out how these animals live or what advantage the shell might confer the researchers need to find living samples. This will be difficult because the snails are just a few millimetres high

two months of sampling have yielded more than 190 morphologically different species from 16 areas, with hundreds more yet to sample

Next time you purchase white button mushrooms at the grocery store, just remember, they may be cute and bite-size but they have a relative out west that occupies some 2,384 acres (965 hectares) of soil in Oregon's Blue Mountains. Put another way, this humongous fungus would encompass 1,665 football fields, or nearly four square miles (10 square kilometers) of turf.

The discovery of this giant Armillaria ostoyae in 1998 heralded a new record holder for the title of the world's largest known organism, believed by most to be the 110-foot- (33.5-meter-) long, 200-ton blue whale. Based on its current growth rate, the fungus is estimated to be 2,400 years old but could be as ancient as 8,650 years, which would earn it a place among the oldest living organisms as well.

Orphaned hedgehogs adopt cleaning brush as their mother

Four tiny orpahned hedgehogs are snuggling up to the bristles of a cleaning brush - because they think it's their mother.

The four inch long creatures are being hand-reared by staff at the New Forest Otter, Owl and Wildlife Park in Ashurst, Hants.

Workers say Mary, Mungo, Midge and Slappy get comfort from playing with the centre's cleaning brush and enjoy rubbing against it.

The smells on the brush, which is used to sweep a yard, remind the hedgehogs of their natural habitat while the texture reminds them of their mother.

"Because they have very poor eyesight you have to appeal to their sense of smell and touch by giving them different scents and textures.

"They like natural scents and have enjoyed playing with our cleaning brushes, soil, leaves, flower pots and the like.

"They particularly seem to enjoy rubbing against the brush.

"It may sound odd but I imagine the bristles feel a bit like their mum."

MacMillan Provincial Park British Columbia

A massive tree stands along the trails in Cathedral Grove in MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada which is hundreds of years of old. In this rainforest you can find many trees such as this one where moss grows rampantly on their bark.

Some of the tree trunks of these old growth trees are over 9 meters around which are a mixture of Douglas Fir, Western Hemlock and Western Red Cedars. Throughout the forest large ferns thrive and a variety of plant life encircles the ground around the base of these giants.

It is a shame to hear of all the controversy that has taken place over the years about logging the area around MacMillan Provincial Park on Vancouver Island in British Columbia and the

protests that still take place. Thousands of people visit Cathedral Grove on a yearly basis to wander through the trails amongst these massive trees and the more people that see them, then the chances lessen of them being taken down in the future.

Maria La Frenais got more than she bargained for when she broke an egg for breakfast.

The Glendene resident was about to start a morning fry-up when she made the unusual discovery - an egg inside an egg.

Ms La Frenais says the egg - described by experts as a freak of nature - was in a tray of supersized free range eggs.

It was the first Sydney University poultry science professor Tom Scott had seen in his 30-year career.

He says a normal egg disturbed in the shell gland could move back up into the oviduct and start production all over again, resulting in an egg inside an egg.

Auckland Zoo vet Berend Westera says the case is rare and defies logic.

He has consulted colleagues overseas who have seen similar things. They say there are documented cases from the late 1800s to 1945.

Giant prehistoric tusks found in Greece

Researchers in northern Greece have uncovered two massive tusks of a prehistoric mastodon that roamed Europe more than 2 million years ago — tusks that could be the largest of their kind ever found.

One of the tusks measured 16-feet-4-inches long and the other was more than 15 feet long,

They were found with the animal's upper and lower jaws — still bearing teeth — and leg bones

Mastodons, an ancestor of the elephant, roamed Europe, Asia and North America, but how they became extinct remains a mystery. They are thought to have disappeared in Europe and Asia some 2 million years ago, but survived in North America until 10,000 years ago.

This animal was in its prime. It was 25 to 30 years old; they lived until about 55. It was about 3.5 meters (11 1/2 feet) tall at the shoulder, and weighed around six tons,

These animals, in their bones, hold a whole load of information about the environment at the time — not just the animal

Single origin of humans theory proven

New research published in the journal Nature (19 July) has proved the single origin of humans theory by combining studies of global genetic variations in humans with skull measurements across the world. The research, at the University of Cambridge and funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, represents a final blow for supporters of a multiple origins of humans theory.

Competing theories on the origins of anatomically modern humans claim that either humans originated from a single point in Africa and migrated across the world, or different populations independently evolved from homo erectus to home sapiens in different areas.

MIT biochemists have identified a molecular mechanism behind fear, and successfully cured it in mice, according to an article in the journal Nature Neuroscience.

Researchers from MIT's Picower Institute for Learning and Memory hope that their work could lead to the first drug to treat the millions of adults who suffer each year from persistent, debilitating fears - including hundreds of soldiers returning from conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.
