Luke Wilson stars as a Pentagon guinea pig who's put in suspended animation for 500 years and wakes to a United States so dumbed down the president is a former wrestler and porn star, the citizens get their news from Hot Naked Chicks & World Report, and the most popular TV show is aptly titled Ow! My Balls. Written and directed by Mike Judge--whose Office Space was one of the sharpest comedies of the 90s--this inverts the premise of Mark Twain's similarly misanthropic A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, making its hero the smartest man on earth by casting him into the future rather than the past. Yet Judge races through some of his most provocative ideas in the opening minutes and ignores his story's many logical inconsistencies; the movie is bracing for its bile but ultimately more frustrating than funny. In Beavis And Butt-head, that devolution is just suggested; in Idiocracy, it's made dizzyingly literal. A perfectly cast Luke Wilson stars as a quintessential everyman who hibernates for centuries and wakes up in a society so degraded by insipid popular culture, crass consumerism, and rampant anti-intellectualism that he qualifies as the smartest man in the world. Corporations cater even more unashamedly to the primal needs of the lowest common denominator—Starbucks now traffics in handjobs as well as lattes—and the English language has devolved into a hilarious patois of hillbilly, Ebonics, and slang.

A Houston School District Police officer has been suspended for distributing the “Ghetto Handbook,” a booklet that mocked African Americans and sparked outrage in the Black community. The eight-page “guide” to Ebonics, promised to teach anybody to speak “as if you just came out of the hood.” Among its definitions are “foty: a 40-ounce bottle of beer”; “aks: to ask a question”; and “hoodrat: scummy girl.” District officials say they are still investigating who all is responsible for the book and why it took three months before they were notified about it. Subtitled “Wacha dun did now?” was distributed to about 15 district police officers, according to spokesman Terry Abbott, who declined to identify the officer. A supervisor retrieved the booklets soon after they were distributed, but district officials said they didn’t learn that the literature existed until somebody complained
