I want to ask all of those people, how is Edwards' affair any different John McCain's? If Edwards is disqualified from running for office because of this, isn't McCain as well?"

Reaction from across the political spectrum has been strong to the news of John Edwards admitting he had an affair in 2006, with many condemning Edwards' actions and denials. But it may also produce an unwanted aftershock for John McCain, reviving references to his own extramarital affairs back in the mid-1970s.

Steve Chapman, the generally conservative Chicago Tribune columnist observed today, "Not that Republicans would be able to make full use of this exposure had Edwards been the nominee. Their prospective nominee, after all, was guilty of the same sin during his first marriage.

McCain

said that he was dating Cindy for nine months while still "cohabiting" with his first wife.

The Los Angeles Times recently revealed that McCain had not been fully truthful on the timeline for his divorce and remarriage.

So you heard about Edwards ditching his sick wife? Wait till you get a load of McCain....'"

Democrat tied to Obama wins special election in Mississippi

The results amount to a rebuke of the Republican strategy of trying nationalize the race by tying Childers to Sen. Barack Obama and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Obama held low approval ratings in the district, but the nearly $2 million that GOP groups poured into northern Mississippi failed to make the race a referendum on the national political landscape.

A GOP House leadership aide told Politico last week that “if we don’t win in Mississippi, I think you are going to see a lot of people running around here looking for windows to jump out of.”

Democrats picked up a northern Mississippi House seat in one of the most conservative-minded districts in the country Tuesday night -- an upset that will reverberate darkly through a House Republican caucus already reeling from losses in special elections in Illinois and Louisiana.

With all precincts reporting, the Democratic nominee, Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, defeated Republican Greg Davis, 54 to 46 percent. Childers was able to expand his three-point margin of victory from the race's first round of balloting last month -- even as he faced an onslaught of Republican attacks.

Republicans dispatched a lineup of heavy hitters in the campaign’s final week, including a pre-election stop Monday by Vice President Dick Cheney. President Bush, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and First Lady Laura Bush recorded automated calls urging voters to support Davis.

"His victory has sent a political thunderbolt across America tonight," DCCC chairman Chris Van Hollen said

In 2001, Republican's drew a map they thought would elect 102 R's and 48 D's. They were wrong as only 88 Republicans and 62 Democrats were elected in 2002

Still, it was a striking blow

The result was the rise of the neo-conservative, uber Republican Tom Craddick who slashed the budget and cut social programs like CHIP and education funding. To this day that funding has never been restored even with surpluses in the state budget

In 2006, Democrats won 6 seats plus Donna Howard's special election. In 2007 we welcomed Kirk England to the Democratic Party and now we have Dan Barrett as member of our caucus as well. We've not even yet had a single vote cast the 2008 primaries, and there are now 71 Democrats in Texas House- a stunning and speedy reversal based on the same map that was drawn to have only 42 Democratic seats

District 97 was not drawn to be a Democratic seat

When you compare that to, (1) the record spending and deficits of the Republican controlled 109th Congress, and (2) Bush never casting a single veto to stop a spending bill, you see how desperate the Republicans are. Shjould we talk about the $2 trillion dollars of waste in Iraq?

Unfortunately, the balanced budgets of the late 1990s created an "easy money" mindset in Congress, which began a spending spree that continues unabated today. Total federal outlays will rise 29 percent between fiscal years 2001 and 2005 according to the president's fiscal year 2005 budget released in February. Real discretionary spending increases in fiscal years 2002, 2003, and 2004 are three of the five biggest annual increases in the last 40 years. Large spending increases have been the principal cause of the government's return to massive budget deficits.

Although defense spending has increased in response to the war on terrorism, President Bush has made little attempt to restrain nondefense spending to offset the higher Pentagon budget.

In command of the White House, Senate, and House of Representatives, Republicans are primarily responsible for the current budget mess

Sen. Pete Domenici is retiring after a generation as a dominant Republican voice on budget matters in Congress, deferring to health concerns after six terms in office.

The 75-year-old New Mexico senator scheduled a formal announcement in late afternoon Thursday in Albuquerque. In a draft statement, he said he has a progressive disease that can cause dysfunction in the parts of the brain important for organization, decision-making and control of mood and behavior.

Domenici spent Wednesday telling Senate colleagues that he has frontotemporal lobar degeneration, or FTLD, a type of dementia. Its name refers to the slow deterioration of affected sections of the brain, the front and lower sides — areas that control such things as language and behavior.

In political terms, Domenici's decision to retire represents yet another blow to Senate Republicans, who lost their majority in 2006 and face a hostile political environment little more than a year before the 2008 elections.

There were approximately 1,000,000 Christians living in peace under the regime of Saddam Hussein, but now thanks to America’s adventure in bringing democracy to their land, a majority of these people have fled for safety.

Chaldean Catholics, who were the largest Christian denomination, once had 80 churches functioning in Baghdad, today only 8 are still active.

A delegation of Christian bishops representing a cross section of all denominations claimed Bush policies had completely disrupted the lives of Christians in Iraq.

As one told the newspaper, Azzaman, “This democracy this man(George Bush) has brought us is that of tanks, kidnappings, random killings, car bombings, and massive marauding armies who go about their work with impunity.”

It is rather ironic that George Bush, who claims to be a born again Christian, has done more to wipe out Christianity in Iraq than any other figure in the history of that country.

This is another unreported story about Bush’s failures in Iraq.

Senator Craig's Efforts Stalled

A Minnesota judge on Thursday refused to let Sen. Larry Craig take back the guilty plea he made after a sex sting arrest, raising the possibility the Idaho Republican will resign his Senate seat as planned.

Judge Charles Porter of the Hennepin County District Court ruled a week after Craig's lawyers contended at a hearing that he had panicked and had been rushed into pleading guilty after an undercover officer arrested him in an airport men's room.

Porter ruled Craig's guilty plea was "accurate, voluntary and intelligent, and ... supported by the evidence."

Craig has become a major embarrassment for Republicans, particularly since they promote their party as the one that stands for conservative family values.

prosecutor Christopher Renz told the hearing there was a "series of invasions" during the encounter, starting when Craig gazed for two minutes into the officer's stall.
