Pennsylvania: Clinton 47% Obama 42%

Senator Hillary Clinton’s lead in the Pennsylvania Primary is shrinking.

The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey in Pennsylvania shows Clinton leading Barack Obama by just five percentage points, 47% to 42%. For Clinton, that five-point edge is down from a ten-point lead a week ago, a thirteen-point lead in mid-March and a fifteen-point advantage in early March.

Support for Clinton slipped from 52% early in March, to 51% in mid-month, 49% a week ago, and 47% today. During that same time frame, support for Obama has increased from 37% to 42%.

A separate survey found that both Democrats are in a competitive race with John McCain for Pennsylvania’s Electoral College votes. Nationally, McCain currently leads both Democrats in the Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll. Looking at the Electoral College, the race is essentially a Toss-Up.

Boomers, though arguably the most prosperous generation in American history, face mounting demands on their financial resources from both their adult children and their aging parents. In fact, one in six Boomers surveyed is "sandwiched," providing assistance to both their parents and adult children, according to Ameriprise Financial’s Money Across Generations study.

Boomers are torn between helping their adult children pay off debts and get started, and helping their aging parents with necessities. This help often comes at the expense of funding their own retirement.

My husband and I have very different perspectives on this. His parents provided everything for him through college, and were generous until their deaths. My parents provided nothing. I paid for college, grad school, and all expenses from junior high forward. Yes, it was very hard and I missed out on a lot. But I learned to be independent and make my own way.

Insure Everybody, One Way or Another

This country can keep private insurance and require everybody to buy in. Or we can cover everybody with a government-funded, single-payer system. But one way or another, the American College of Physicians argues in this new paper, we have to cover everybody.

But as the Philadelphia Inquirer notes, many docs have historically been wary of a single-payer system, which some have worried would give the government too much control.

now that covering the uninsured has become a high-profile issue in the presidential race, the ACP may have figured the moment is opportune to jump into the public debate. In fact, the ACP also put out this guide to where the candidates stand on health care.

What should the federal government do about the uninsured?

Require everyone to have insurance coverage, but keep private insurance.
Adopt a single-payer, government-funded system.
The government shouldn’t require everyone to have health care.

How Much Are CT Scans Increasing Cancer Risk?

Americans get about 62 million CT scans every year — which could ultimately cause 1.5% to 2% of all cancers in this country, according to an estimate published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine (online here).

The article suggests that, while many scans are useful and even life-saving, others might be replaced with other procedures. For example, the authors say, ultrasound may often be as effective as CT when diagnosing appendicitis in children.

It is tough to estimate the risk of developing cancer from radiation risk. As the authors (two Ph.D.s from Columbia’s Center for Radiological Research) point out, most such estimates are based on studies of survivors of the atomic bombs dropped on Japan in 1945.

Arl Van Moore, chairman the American College of Radiology’s board, told the WSJ that “there are scans performed that may well be unnecessary,”

he called the authors’ conclusions about the possible 2% rate of future cancer diagnoses “a reach.”

If Red Bull gives you wings, as the energy drink’s advertising suggests, what happens when you mix the popular beverage with alcohol? Broken wings, all too often, says a study from Wake Forest University.

Researchers there found that college students who down cocktails of booze and energy drinks, such as Red Bull, run a significantly higher risk of injury compared with students who stick to uncaffeinated alcoholic beverages. The students sucking down Speed Balls, Bullgaritas and Bull Breezes were much more likely to be hurt or injured, to ride with an intoxicated driver or to take advantage of someone else sexually.

“The analogy I like to use is that it’s like stepping on the gas pedal and the break pedal of a car at the same time,” Mary Claire O’Brien

She presented the findings at a meeting of the American Public Health Association.

The results follow several studies that found mixing alcohol, a depressant, and caffeine, a stimulant, can make people feel less drunk than they really are.

Alzheimer's robs memory faster in the educated

WASHINGTON - Having more years of formal education delays the memory loss linked to Alzheimer's disease, but once the condition begins to take hold, better-educated people decline more rapidly, researchers said on Monday.

Their study, published in the journal Neurology, tracked memory loss in a group of elderly people from New York City's Bronx borough before they were diagnosed with Alzheimer's or another form of old-age dementia.

Every year of education delayed the accelerated memory decline that precedes dementia by about 2-1/2 months, according to the researchers at Yeshiva University's Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York.

During his Tuesday press conference, Joe Paterno said the media are creating the perception that Penn State has an image problem.

The reality is this, though:

After an off-campus fight in April involving several players, Paterno said he wasn't tolerating this type of behavior. Since then, he's suspended two starters, with senior tailback Austin Scott being the latest last week.

Another starter, sophomore tight end Andrew Quarless, and three other players were cited for underage drinking. Two of them - freshmen Ryan Breen and Joe Suhey - were cited this past weekend.

Paterno, 80, is also looking into a situation in which two players might have been involved in a fight after Saturday's Big Ten win against Iowa.

Alzheimer’s is a brutal disease, and it’s been brutally resistant to treatment.

There are plenty of experimental drugs in development now, but the drawn-out, inexorable decline for patients with the disease makes it tough for researchers to tease out whether a drug is having an effect. That’s especially true in the early, small trials of medicines that have just started on their journey out of the lab.

“Unless it’s a Lazarus drug, the only way to see the results is to do a Phase III study,” Peter Davies, an Alzheimer’s researcher at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, said Monday in a briefing sponsored by New York City Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. As a result, he said, companies are forced to push potential drugs into late-stage trials that enroll more than 1,000 patients, last for years and cost millions. “It puts you in a huge gamble,” Davies said.

Davies and Rudolph Tanzi of Harvard were speakers at a meeting of the Alzheimer’s group last night.

A Penn State contest owns the top four spots and seven of the top 10 all-time among the highest rated Big Ten football games on ESPN. The Nittany Lions' win over Michigan State during the unbeaten 1994 Big Ten Championship season remains the highest rated Big Ten game on ESPN with a 5.40 rating. The 2005 primetime battle between Penn State and Ohio State earned the conference's second-highest rating (4.91), followed by the 1994 Penn State-Indiana game (4.70), with the 1995 Penn State-Michigan State thriller (4.10) in fourth.

A Penn State game also owns the top four spots and six of the top 10 all-time among the highest viewed Big Ten football games on ESPN.
