H1N1 Flu virus activity is now widespread in 46 states. Nationwide, visits to doctors for influenza-like-illness are increasing sharply, and are now higher than what is usually seen at the peak of the flu seasons.......

The 2009 H1N1 (Swine Flu) is a new influenza virus causing illness in people. This new virus was first detected in the United States in April 2009. This virus is spreading from person-to-person worldwide, probably in much the same way that regular seasonal influenza viruses spread. On June 11, 2009, the World Health Organization (WHO) signaled that a pandemic of 2009 H1N1 flu was underway.

Last week I wrote -- Worried About Alzheimer's? Tip #1 Exercise.

I mentioned that more than 100 million American's are touched by Alzheimer's, and more than 33 million are worried about Alzheimer's.

There are at least 18 research studies showing that exercise can improve memory in people suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

High cholesterol in your 40s increases the odds of contracting Alzheimer's--by 50 percent.

High blood pressure (hypertension) causes build-up of beta-amyloid in the brain. Beta-amyloid is a central component of the senile plaque in the brains of Alzheimer's patients, and its toxicity against brain cells is believed to be a prime cause of Alzheimer's.

This fact is not well known but if you have a big belly in middle age the chances that you could suffer from dementia are tripled.

To caregivers, I am convinced that exercise will lower the odds that you might suffer from Alzheimer's

Newsday (the New York Newspaper) has the best coverage, collection of stories, and video on Alzheimer's on the Internet -- hands down. It appears to me that they are doing more to educate the public, and bring an understanding of Alzheimer's into the public awareness than any other publication.

"The most surprising fact about all this is how much people really care," said Karen Henley, who lives in Westbury. "Everyday people, who are struggling themselves, just want to reach out to help. I didn't think that many people cared about Alzheimer's disease, but I think Mike's age shocked everyone."

Is it really Alzheimer's or something else?

Many people assume that if an older person becomes forgetful and can no longer deal with some of the basic activities of daily living, he or she must have Alzheimer’s disease. This is not always the case.

I cannot tell you how many times I have recommended to someone to go beyond their personal physician and get a neurological consult. They rarely follow through which never stops amazing me.

Dementia (Alzheimer's disease) like symptoms can be caused by numerous factors. The following can present as a false positive for Alzheimer's. They can only be ruled out by appropriate testing.

My name is Bob DeMarco, I am an Alzheimer's caregiver. My mother Dorothy, now 93 years old, suffers from Alzheimer's disease. We live our lives one day at a time.

I'm fortunate in two ways. I picked great parents, and God and my parents blessed me with an ability to read fast, and absorb information.

My brain is wired to view everything as a system. This allows me to see all the parts when I encounter something new, or when I am trying to figure things out.

When I first learned my mother was suffering from dementia, I quickly learned you could put everything I knew about dementia and Alzheimer's in a thimble.

So, I started reading. The more I learned the more I wanted to know. I learned a great deal about Alzheimer's disease--including the science. It helped me understand a very mystifying disease. It helped me to put a frame around something that is difficult if not impossible to describe.

I started this thread with this article--Did a Boca Raton Couple Murder Elly Lorey Who Suffered from Alzheimer's Disease?

Elly Lorey spent the last of her 89 years in a state of extreme mental decay, living in a locked, unventilated room where she smeared excrement on the walls and existed on a diet of honey buns and Ramen noodles, according to police reports. When she died, Lorey had withered to 80 pounds. Despite the signs of advanced Alzheimer's disease, she had received no medical care.

"As we entered the bedroom, my senses were shocked... the smell of urine and feces...no carpet on the floor. It appeared to once have been wallpapered but most of it, nearly all had been removed. There were gouge marks in the drywall, brown smudges everywhere," said Sgt. John Nolan.

Currently there are between 45 and 60 million people providing care for a loved one in the US. As 77 million Baby Boomers age that number is expected to more than double.
I see families on a daily basis who have found themselves facing an unexpected illness or injury with a spouse, parent, or loved one, and are struggling to figure out the healthcare maze. I believe knowledge is power. The focus of my blogs will be to help people in our community by sharing 30+ years of my experience and education, so they are better equipped to handle and make decisions, and reduce their stress level, if or when they find themselves facing a crisis.

I have spent time with thousands of seniors and their families. Every person and family is unique, and has their own unique set of circumstances, but the situations they face are common among our senior population.

we as a nation need to provide better care and treatment of our older citizens.

One of my greatest fears is the day I might have to place my mother in an Alzheimer's care facility. I say might because I pray that I'll never have to do it.

I receive emails all the time from people that experience the guilt, angst, and remorse of having place their loved one in a Alzheimer's care facility that provides little care, and is a horrid environment for their loved one.

It doesn't have to be that way...........

Real Unemployment Now 15.8 Percent

Not many people are aware of the U-6 report that is issued by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Marginally attached workers are persons who currently are neither working nor looking for work but indicate that they want and are available for a job and have looked for work sometime in the recent past. Discouraged workers, a subset of the marginally attached,have given a job-market related reason for not looking currently for a job.

The number reported today for this series is 15.8% .

Will President Obama put an End to the Medicare Rip-Off?

I bet you didn't know this. When your elected representatives in Washington voted on the Medicare Modernization Act of 2003 they slipped in this dilly -- when Medicare buys prescription drugs from the pharmaceutical companies they are not allowed to negotiate the price they pay.

Let me put it this way, we the taxpayers pay full retail price when Medicare buys prescription drugs -- for us.

I can buy a 16 ounce can of Old El Paso refried beans in Publix for a $1.49. Or, I can go to Walmart and buy the same product in the same size for $1.09. I have a choice -- Medicare doesn't.

Sometimes it is helpful to look at the market from a long term perspective. I think most believe the current bear market is new. However, the long term view indicates we have been in a bear market since the Nasdaq Composite topped out at 5,132 in March, 2000.

Forty percent of Alzheimer's caregivers end up suffering from depression. Do you want to see this happen to a loved one or friend?

Like it or not, if you are a family member or friend of an Alzheimer's caregiver and you are not helping them--you have abandoned them. I am sure this sounds harsh. But, it's not even close to the harshness of your own behavior.

Alzheimer's is a sinister disease--it kills the brain of the person suffering from Alzheimer's.

And, it will try to kill the brain of the Alzheimer's caregiver.
