Before lecturing the rest of us, the Prime Minister might usefully ponder what he could to do lower food bills. Gordon Brown says that judicious purchasing could save the average family £8.00 a week. Even if this is true, it is a small saving next to the £20.00 a week that we should save if Britain left the EU's Common Agricultural Policy.

It penalises us repeatedly: we pay higher taxes to encourage production, we pay again to store surpluses, we pay yet again to destroy them, and then we're billed all over again as consumers to maintain artificially high prices.

Preventable poverty is inflicted on Africa, which finds European markets closed to its chief exports. Agricultural subsidies stand in the way of a comprehensive world trade settlement which would benefit consumers and farmers alike. Inflation is driven up, with deleterious consequences for the entire economy.

Bill Clinton says Barack Obama must 'kiss my ass' for his support

Bill Clinton is so bitter about Barack Obama's victory over his wife Hillary that he has told friends the Democratic nominee will have to beg for his wholehearted support.

Mr Obama is expected to speak to Mr Clinton for the first time since he won the nomination in the next few days, but campaign insiders say that the former president's future campaign role is a "sticking point" in peace talks with Mrs Clinton's aides.

A senior Democrat who worked for Mr Clinton has revealed that he recently told friends Mr Obama could "kiss my ass" in return for his support.

She may just conceivably end up as the Democratic nominee, but the default option isn't so bad for Hillary Clinton, namely an active life in the public eye as the junior senator from New York. But for her husband Bill, the nomination battle has been bad news ever since March.

Clinton left the White House eight years ago with the highest job performance rating - 65 per cent - of any president since World War Two. He was one point ahead of Ronald Reagan. That didn't mean that Americans thought much of his character and morals. Almost four out of five gave him an F on moral and ethical standards.

Two terms of George Bush Jr improved Bill's character rating no end, particularly among liberals and blue-collar workers. They forgot Clinton's endless political liaisons with the Republican right, his onslaughts on welfare, his job-exporting trade deals.

Flying penis disrupts rally

A political rally has been broken up in Russia by a remote-controlled flying penis.

Kremlin critic Garry Kasparov was addressing supporters when it was released.

The former chess champion managed to keep a fairly straight face in front of 500 Kremlin critics.

Eventually a security guard swatted the obscene helicopter device out of the air.

It was reportedly set off by pro-Kremlin Young Russia activists.

Hillary Clinton's candidacy has done feminism no favours

When the dust settles over the 2008 election, will Hillary Clinton have helped or hindered women's advance toward the US presidency?

Right now, Hillary is in Godzilla mode, refusing to accept Barack Obama's looming nomination and threatening to tie the Democratic party in legal knots until the August convention and beyond.

The Clintons are ruthless scrappers who will lock their bulldog teeth in any bloody towel.

She is both inspiring role model and cringe-making bad example — an overtly feminist careerist who never found a way to succeed without her husband's connections, advice, and intervention.

The next major female presidential candidate will be well advised to stuff any errant husband into a rucksack and chuck him down a laundry chute.

If they are to be truly equal, women must fight their own fights and not rely on a borrowed spotlight.

'Tunnel' links New York to London

It was possibly the most laborious and least informative interview ever conducted.

It took about five minutes, yielded a one-word answer, and gave little real flavour of the subject.

Still - it was conducted using two white boards, two marker pens, and it was done over a distance of 3,471 miles (5,585 km).

If you believe artist and inventor Paul St George then his "Telectroscope" connects New York and London via a (very) long tunnel running through the earth's crust, with the images bouncing back and forth using mirrors.

The other explanation is that it is all done by optical fibres - take your pick.

One end of the "tunnel" emerges next to Tower Bridge on the banks of the Thames in London - the other is next to Brooklyn Bridge on the banks of New York's East River.

It looks like something HG Wells might have imagined.

Each end has a giant telescope-like construction which appears to punch its way out of the earth.

The economists are telling us that everything is going to be fine. It seems that the worst is behind us. The credit crunch is over, the tax rebate cheques are in the mail, the dollar will stop falling, and the economy is now expected to pick up in the second half of the year.

If you like your home, it may be worth paying off a $400,000 mortgage on a house that is currently worth $380,000. This sounds like a much worse deal if the mortgage is $400,000, but the home is worth $250,000,

Of course, the economists who most of the media rely upon to inform the public don't see any of these problems ahead, just as they didn't see any problems ahead at this time last year. But those of us who learned our grade school arithmetic know that we can look forward to serious economic and financial troubles ahead.

clipper's remarks: Last I heard Israel has a large nuclear arsenal of its own, with the delivery systems that could easily reach Iran. This has been the case for some time now. Why do we have to promise to "totally obliterate Iran" on behalf of Israel when the Israelis are perfectly capable of doing so themselves, at any time of their choosing?

Cynical Washington insiders say Hillary Clinton is so desperate to scupper Barack Obama's White House bid that she could back Republican John McCain this time around - leaving her a clear run at the top job in 2012.

In the face of seemingly insurmountable mathematical odds, where Barack Obama currently leads in states won, popular votes, pledged delegates, and combined delegates, Mrs Clinton battles on.

she’s been ignoring pleas from across the civilised world to call it quits, insisting that the people have a right to vote again and again until they get the right answer.

Robert Mugabe finds himself in a similar plight. According to one wag at Free Republic, he’s taking his inspiration from the former First Lady.

Mr Matonga allegedly continued: “We both believe every vote should count, unless it helps our opposition and, like Hillary, who is willing to completely destroy everything around her, including her own political party and it seems, the United States in the process, we can proudly say we're one step ahead of her as we have already completely corrupted the government here and ruined the country.

We are going to a runoff election, and Hillary will fight for a runoff in the 2nd round of voting at the convention, and finally, we're both ruthless and relentless in our pursuit of power. We have much in common.
