Producer sues Vanessa Hudgens for $5 million

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A music producer has sued Vanessa Hudgens for $5 million, claiming the actress and her father have repeatedly violated a contract and failed to pay him his share of her earnings.

Hudgens, one of the stars of Disney's successful "High School Musical" series, entered into an agreement with producer Johnny Vieira when she was still a minor, the lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday, states. Vieira claims Hudgens and her father, Greg, sued to get out of the agreement, but have also failed to abide by settlement terms.

An e-mail message seeking comment from Hudgens' publicist wasn't immediately returned Tuesday morning.

Vieira is described in the lawsuit as a songwriter and music producer who was "engaged in the business of discovering and developing artists in the music industry" when he entered into an agreement with Hudgens in 2005.

Britney considering MTV comeback

Pop star Britney Spears is in talks to return to the MTV Video Music Awards next month, a year after her widely criticised comeback performance.

The star is already appearing in adverts for the ceremony alongside host Russell Brand.

But a spokesman for MTV said only Lil' Wayne and the Jonas Brothers had been confirmed to appear and nothing had been finalised with Spears.

The MTV Music Video Awards take place in Los Angeles on 7 September.

Spears' polished appearance is in sharp contrast to her appearance at last year's MTV awards, where she performed her song Gimme More.

It was considered to be flat and tired by many critics, but became the most talked-about moment of the 2007 awards ceremony.

China abuzz over lip-syncing singer in Olympics opening ceremony

BEIJING -- China's $100-million Olympics opening ceremony wowed its global TV audience with a lavish spectacle and pizazz that tried to present a perfect image of China to the world, right down to the perfect teeth of the little girl who took center-stage and sang an ode to the motherland.

Except the voice was not hers. It was recorded and belonged to another girl, with better pipes but crooked baby teeth and a chubby face.

Nor was all quite what it seemed with the dazzling fireworks sequence watched by a billion or more television viewers. Worried about the difficulty of cameras capturing 29 sequential explosions from Tiananmen Square to the Olympic Village, the Chinese visual effects team re-created all but one of the big bangs in an animation studio, and inserted the 55-second clip into the live TV coverage.

Perfection, it seems, must sometimes be faked.

Pals pay tribute to Bernie Mac

Hollywood heavyweights have paid tribute to Bernie Mac, who died at the weekend aged 50.

The actor and comedian died in a Chicago hospital after a bout with pneumonia.

Just days earlier, his publicist Danica Smith issued a statement saying Mac was "responding well to treatment".

"The world just got a little less funny," said George Clooney, who co-starred with Mac in the Ocean's trilogy of films.

"He will be dearly missed."

Echoing Clooney's sentiments, Ocean's star Brad Pitt said: "I lament the loss of a ferociously funny and hardcore family man.

"My thoughts are with [Mac's wife] Rhonda and their family."

"Losing him is like losing 12 people because he absolutely filled up any room he was in," said actor and comedian Chris Rock.

"I'm gonna miss the Mac Man."

Edwards ex-mistress rules out paternity test

WASHINGTON (AP) — The ex-mistress of former presidential candidate John Edwards said Saturday she will not participate in DNA testing to establish the paternity of her daughter.

Rielle Hunter's lawyer, Robert Gordon, says his client is a private individual who is not running for public office and that she wishes to maintain the privacy of her and her daughter.

"Rielle is therefore making no statement now or in the future," Gordon said in a statement. "Furthermore, Rielle will not participate in DNA testing or any other invasion of her or her daughter's privacy now or in the future."

On Friday, Edwards admitted to having an extramarital affair with Hunter in 2006 but denied that he was the father of Hunter's 5-month-old daughter. Edwards offered to take a paternity test to prove he is not the father.

Hunter's decision means that the issue of who the father is remains an open question.

Phelps stays on course for eight golds

BEIJING (Reuters) - Michael Phelps dodged a bullet train of French relay swimmers to collect his second Beijing gold medal and stay on course for an unprecedented eight golds on an incredible record-breaking day at the Water Cube on Monday.

Phelps joined his American team mates Garret Weber-Gale, Cullen Jones and Jason Lezak to smash the 4x100 metres freestyle relay after a breathtaking struggle with France that threatened to derail his chances of breaking Mark Spitz's record of seven golds at a single Olympics.

France looked to have sealed the race when former world record holder Alain Bernard led by half a body length with one lap to go.

But Lezak overhauled the flying Frenchman on the very last stroke to win the gold in three minutes 08.24 seconds and carve nearly four seconds off the previous record of 3:12.23 set the night before by the American second-string team in the heats.

Jewel marries rodeo star in Bahamas

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Pop singer Jewel eloped with her rodeo-star boyfriend in the Bahamas on Thursday, People magazine reported. The 34-year-old singer married Ty Murray, 38, during a private ceremony, the magazine said, quoting Jewel's publicist.

Jewel said on her Web site on Wednesday that she and Murray were heading to the Caribbean islands for six days with two friends.

The pair, who live on a ranch in Texas, had been together for more than a decade. Jewel, whose last name is Kilcher, achieved fame in the mid-1990s with such pop-folk tunes as "Who Will Save Your Soul" and "Foolish Games." She recently released a country album and served as a judge on the TV talent show "Nashville Star."

Murray is a legend on the rodeo circuit, winning the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association's All-Around world championship title a record seven times.

New York gig marks end of the road for The Police

NEW YORK (Reuters) - British rock trio The Police played their final concert together on Thursday and were joined by the real police -- the New York City police band.

Singer and bassist Sting, drummer Stewart Copeland and guitarist Andy Summers reunited for a world tour last May and have since played 150 concerts for 3.7 million people, Sting told the crowd between songs at Madison Square Garden.

"The real triumph of this tour is that we haven't strangled each other," he said, adding: "That's not to say it hasn't crossed my mind, or Stewart's, or Andy's."

There were touches of the surreal in the final gig by the band that made its name in the late 1970s and 1980s with such hits as "Walking on the Moon" and "Every Breath You Take."

Johnny Depp Mad For Wonderland

Johnny Depp is set for a trip to Wonderland, courtesy of director pal Tim Burton.

The actor is to play the Mad Hatter in a new version of Alice in Wonderland, according to new reports.

The movie, which will hit cinema screens in 2010, will be directed by Burton. It will mark the seventh time he and Depp have worked together.

Their past successes have included Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands. (c) WENN

Google launches free music service in China

SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Google Inc has launched a music search service in China that will give users access to free downloads of licensed songs, while capturing advertising revenue for music providers in a market rife with piracy.

The service poses a challenge to Baidu.com Inc, which dominates China's Internet search market but has, along with other Chinese search providers, faced lawsuits charging that it facilitates copyright violations through downloads of unlicensed music.

Google said on Wednesday its service would initially let Internet users search tens of thousands of Chinese songs by singer or song title on its website and download them from Top100.cn, a Chinese music website co-founded by basketball star Yao Ming.

Advertising revenue from the service will be shared among Top100.cn and its music partners.

Mary-Kate Olsen won't talk to investigators about Heath Ledger's drugs

Mary-Kate Olsen is refusing to talk to US federal investigators about how Dark Knight star Heath Ledger got hold of two powerful painkillers which contributed to his fatal overdose.

Olsen’s lawyer Michael C Miller has twice declined requests from the Drug Enforcement Administration to speak to the actress, claiming his client had nothing to do with the drugs.

A law enforcement official said Full House star Olsen, 22, will not answer questions without immunity from any prosecution which could follow.

But Mr Miller said: “We have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr. Ledger’s death and the fact that Ms. Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr. Ledger consumed.’’

Olsen was a close friend of Ledger’s, and was the first person called by a masseuse who found the 28-year-old actor’s body in his New York apartment.

The "We Own the Night" star caresses herself, rolls around in a rumpled bed and - oops! - flashes a nipple in the 30-second TV spot for Secret Obsession.

"Between love and madness lies obsession," Mendes, 34, whispers huskily in the commercial. "Love ... madness. It's my secret."

The ban "is not entirely a surprise for the U.S. market," Tom Murry, president and chief operating officer of Calvin Klein, Inc., said in a statement to the Daily News.

Morgan Freeman hospitalized after car wreck

(CNN) -- Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was in serious condition at a Memphis hospital after being involved in a car accident Sunday night, according to hospital officials.

Milla Borden, spokeswoman for the Memphis Regional Medical Center, confirmed that Freeman was a patient at the hospital.

CNN affilliate WMC of Memphis reported that he was in a car accident in Tallahatchie County, Mississippi, about 100 miles south of Memphis, late Sunday.

According to The Associated Press, Freeman was "lucid" when the rescue team found his car.

"They had to use the jaws of life to extract him from the vehicle," Clay McFerrin, editor of Sun Sentinel in Charleston, Mississippi, said. "He was lucid, conscious. He was talking, joking with some of the rescue workers at one point."

Lindsay Lohan: Chief's 'gay' remark out of line

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Lindsay Lohan said Friday that police have no business getting involved in her personal life, a day after the police chief explained that the paparazzi were no longer an issue -- in part because the 22-year-old actress had evidently "gone gay."

"Police chiefs shouldn't get involved in everyone else's business when it comes to their personal life. It's inappropriate," Lohan said in a video shot by paparazzi Friday and posted on TMZ.com.

In the footage, Lohan and gal pal Samantha Ronson are trekking through the Los Angeles Airport on their way to catch a flight to Chicago.

The day before, Chief William Bratton said the paparazzi have become less of a problem thanks to Britney Spears, Paris Hilton and Lohan leading more moderate lifestyles.
