Moments before the hapless baby would have been torn apart, these images show its mother appearing to leap off a nearby tree and attacking the surprised dog.

Using its sharp teeth and claws, the squirrel tore into its canine opponent and distracted it so the baby could escape to freedom.

The baby squirrel appears to have fallen to the ground as it was being helped up the tree.

Bloodhound SSC jet car to hit 1,000mph

clipper's remarks: The design has been finalised for the world's fastest car, set to be the first to top 1,000mph (1,610km/h). The Bloodhound SSC team are undergoing 'parametric optimisation', tweaking the blueprint ahead of the world land-speed record attempt in 2011.

Green holds the current record, hitting 763mph (1,228km/h) in the Thrust SSC in 1997. The Bloodhound is expected to top 1,000mph on its run, which will take place on Hakseen Pan, a 19km long, 5km wide desert in the Northern Cape Province of South Africa.

The Bloodhound SSC sports a 400kg hybrid rocket beneath the 1,000kg Rolls Royce EJ200 Eurofighter engine in a jet-over-rocket configuration, freeing up space for extra parachutes, and a spot of shopping. Together the engines will provide 212kN (47,500lb) of thrust. According to the BBC, that's 180 Formula One cars.

The goal of the Bloodhound project is to inspire kids to engage with science, technology and engineering. That's if you need a reason to build a freakin' rocket car. You can follow the team's progress on a Facebook group.

THE Milky Way's neighbourhood may be teeming with invisible galaxies, one of which appears to be crashing into our own.

In 2008, a cloud of hydrogen with a mass then estimated at about 1 million suns was found to be colliding with our galaxy. Now it appears the object is massive enough to be a galaxy itself.

Called Smith's cloud, it has managed to avoid disintegrating during its smash-up with our own, much bigger galaxy. What's more, its trajectory suggests it punched through the disc of our galaxy once before, about 70 million years ago.

To have survived, it must contain much more matter than previously thought, in order to provide enough gravity to hold it together.

Many more such dark galaxies may be out there

Simulations of galaxy formation suggest a galaxy the size of the Milky Way should feature about 1000 dwarf galaxies, but only a few dozen have been found so far. Some of the missing dwarfs may be dark galaxies that are all but invisible

On Veterans Day, Christine Devlin stood in the cold in Westwood for the unveiling of a new memorial to local soldiers lost overseas, including her son Michael, one of the 241 servicemen killed in the bombing of the US Marine barracks in Lebanon in 1983.

Devlin is among 30 Massachusetts relatives of victims of the Beirut attack who have been fighting for more than a decade to get compensation for what many consider the first major terrorist attack against the United States. After a federal judge ruled in 2007 that Iran was liable for $2.65 billion in damages to be shared by 150 families seeking restitution, they believed they were on the cusp of victory.

But now, the Obama administration is going to court to try to block payments from Iranian assets that the families' lawyers want seized, contending that it would jeopardize sensitive negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program

The Wall Street Journal reported:

Barack Obama has now played 25 rounds of golf, a sport he picked up about a decade ago when he was an Illinois state senator. That’s more golf than former President George W. Bush played in two terms, according to CBS White House correspondent Mark Knoller, who tracks presidential trivia.

It’s been over 3 months since the top general in Afghanistan requested more troops.
Obama has still not made his decision on whether to support the US soldiers and marines in Afghanistan.

clipper's remarks: So why am i Amplifying this horrible review of Amplify? Honestly, i'm not exactly sure. Hopefully by the time I stop writing this, i'll figure it out.

This review was posted by a user who I exchanged several emails with, trying to understand the problems he was having and doing our best to fix whatever we could. Most of the time, his complaints were hard to understand and didn't even seem sensible. So it really stinks that his review now sits as a stain on the official Amplify Firefox Extension page.

I wish there was a place i could go to post a review of ConJunTuraL. I think this is what I'd say. "Before you go bashing a company, give some thought to whether your complaints are reasonable. Give some thought to whether your broken English might have impacted their ability to understand and address your concerns. Give some thought to the fact that as a free service, Amplify provides better customer support than Verizon, AT&T or Comcast. Give some thought that by posting

Dear President Obama,
My name is Harold Estes, approaching 95 on December 13 of this year.

I enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1934 and served proudly before, during and after WW II retiring as a Master Chief Bos'n Mate. Now I live in a "rest home" located on the western end of Pearl Harbor allowing me to keep alive the memories of 23 years of service to my country.

I am amazed, angry and determined not to see my country die before I do but you seem hell bent not to grant me that wish.

You could be our greatest president because you face the greatest challenge ever presented to any president. You're not going to restore American greatness by bringing back our bloated economy. That's not our greatest threat. Losing the heart and soul of who we are as Americans is our big fight now. And I sure as hell don't want to think my president is the enemy in this final battle.

President Obama squeezed in a trip to Copenhagen last month to lobby, unsuccessfully, for Chicago to host the 2016 Summer Olympics. He plans to travel to Oslo next month to accept the Nobel Peace Prize, an award that even Obama has said he does not deserve. And this coming week, he sets out on a weeklong tour of Asia.

But the president does not plan to travel to Germany to attend the 20th anniversary celebration Monday of the fall of the Berlin Wall, drawing heated criticism from those who say he's ignoring a shining triumph of American-inspired democracy.

"John F. Kennedy famously told Berliners, 'Ich bin ein Berliner.' On the 20th anniversary of the last century's most stirring triumph of freedom, Obama is telling them, 'Ich bin beschaftigt' -- i.e., I'm busy," he wrote. "Obama's failure to go to Berlin is the most telling nonevent of his presidency. It's hard to imagine any other American president eschewing the occasion."

clipper's remarks: White House Communications Director Anita Dunn said that she had checked with colleagues who "deal with TV issues" and that they had not told people to avoid Fox. On the contrary, they had urged people to appear on the network, Dunn wrote in an e-mail.

But Patrick Caddell, a Fox News contributor and former pollster for President Carter, said he had spoken to Democratic consultants who said they were told by the White House to avoid appearances on Fox. He declined to give their names.

Caddell said he had not gotten that message himself from the White House.

He added: "I have heard that they've done that to others in not too subtle ways. I find it appalling. When the White House gets in the business of suppressing dissent and comment, particularly from its own party, it hurts itself."

Some observers say White House officials might be urging consultants to spurn Fox to isolate the network and make it appear more partisan.

The Los Angeles Times (yes, the Los Angeles Times!) reports:

At least one Democratic political strategist has gotten a blunt warning from the White House to never appear on Fox News Channel, an outlet that presidential aides have depicted as not so much a news-gathering operation as a political opponent bent on damaging the Obama administration.

The Democratic strategist said that shortly after an appearance on Fox, he got a phone call from a White House official telling him not to be a guest on the show again. The call had an intimidating tone, he said.

The message was, “We better not see you on again,” said the strategist, who spoke on condition of anonymity so as not to run afoul of the White House. An implicit suggestion, he said, was that “clients might stop using you if you continue.”

Keep it up, Obama.

Lieberman Refuses to Ignore the Obvious

Sen. Joe Lieberman distinguishes himself from the maddening mush emanating from elected leaders and the chattering class on the Foot Hood massacre. He states what should be, and I think is to ordinary Americans, obvious: this from all appearances is “the worst terrorist attack since 9/11.” Based on what we know, Lieberman says that Hasan seems to be a “self-radicalized, homegrown terrorist.” Shocking, I know, to tie the murderer’s own words, actions, and behavior to the heinous slaughter of our troops, but there’s precious little of that going on so far. Lieberman therefore proposes a full-blown investigation, citing plenty of evidence that Hasan “turned to Islamist extremism”:

“This is not the first attempt by Islamist extremists to go after U.S. military bases,”

The military, said Lieberman, needs to have “zero tolerance” for those expressing extremist views. “He should have been gone,” the senator said.

During Geithner’s Senate testimony, he admitted that both Fannie and Freddie played a central role in the financial crisis, telling Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) that the two government-sponsored enterprises (GSE) were a “core part” of the country’s financial woes.

“Absolutely,” Geithner said. “Fannie and Freddie were a core part of what went wrong in our system.”

Geithner explained that the administration did not have the time to come up with coherent regulations regarding Fannie and Freddie because of its other legislative priorities.

“We did not believe that we could have, in this time frame, lay out a sensible set of reforms to guide and determine what their future will be,” said Geithner. “We didn’t think it was an essential thing to do just now, but we do believe it is an essential thing to do.”

ABC: U.S. Knew Hasan Tried Contacting Al Qaeda Months Ago

ABC's Brian Ross reported Monday that suspected Fort Hood shooter Nidal Halik Hasan tried to contact people connected to the terrorist group al Qaeda.

Even worse, U.S. intelligence officials were aware of this months ago, and "it's not known whether the military was ever told by the CIA or others that one of its majors was making efforts to communicate with figures under electronic surveillance."

Given media's discomfort with discussing Hasan's Muslim ties, as well as their desire to never point fingers at the Obama administration, it's going to be very interesting to watch how Ross's exclusive report on "Good Morning America" Monday will be covered in the coming days (video embedded below the fold with full transcript):

Time to walk away from Israeli-Palestinian conflict?

It’s not often that I agree with Tom Friedman, and even in this instance my agreement comes with heavy qualifiers.

the US has no reason to pursue the Israeli-Palestinian peace process,

Administrations of both parties have approached the conflict as an apology for close ties with Israel, perhaps as a means of maintaining diplomatic credibility with Arab and Muslim nations in the region. Well, that hasn’t worked out very well, has it? The nations that hate us still hate us, and the nations that sell us oil would still sell us oil anyway. (We get more from Canada and Mexico, anyway.)

The Israelis have gone farther on several occasions, including especially with Bill Clinton, only to have Yasser Arafat reject their concessions and call for armed intifada instead.

The Israeli-Palestinian peace process will never move forward under the current conditions because the Palestinians put terrorists in charge of their pseudo-state.
