Gonzales claimed that not one single abuse of the "national security letters" provision had been reported.

I was one of four library colleagues who challenged an NSL in the courts around the time of its reauthorization. We were under a gag order because of the nondisclosure provision of the NSL section of the Patriot Act. This happened even though a judge with high-level security clearance had declared that there was no risk in identifying us as recipients of an NSL.

We were therefore not allowed to testify to Congress about our experience with the letters - which seek information, without court review, on people like library users.

It is more than irksome to now discover that the attorney general was giving Congress false information - at the same time that we recipients of NSLs were not allowed to express our concerns.

we were prohibited from speaking

until after the Patriot Act was reauthorized

Tags: gonzales, patriot act, bush

<clipSource>http://www.courant.com/news/opinion/commentary/hc-commentarypatriot0722.artjul22%2C0%2C730398.story</clipSource>

GOP Scandals Illustrated - A Scorecard To Keep 'Em Straight

clipped by: Did the most powerful Republicans in America have the computer capacity, software skills and electronic infrastructure in place on Election Night 2004 to tamper with the Ohio results to ensure George W. Bush's re-election?

yes. There is more than ample documentation to show that on Election Night 2004, Ohio's "official" Secretary of State website -- which gave the world the presidential election results -- was redirected from an Ohio government server to a group of servers that contain scores of Republican web sites, including the secret White House e-mail accounts that have emerged in the scandal surrounding Attorney General Alberto Gonzales's firing of eight federal prosecutors.

This high-tech system used to count and report the 2004 presidential vote- from server-hosting contracts, to software-writing services, to remote-access capability, to the actual server usage logs themselves -- must be added to the growing congressional investigations.

Tags: bush, bush administration, rove, gop, attorney general, gonzales, elections, rnc, corruption

<clipSource>http://www.alternet.org/story/50941/</clipSource>

A Letter From Anonymous Justice Dept. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who is helping lead the investigation into the firing of eight federal prosecutors, said Gingrich's comments pointed to building bipartisan support for a new attorney general.

Tags: attorney general, gonzales, bush, bush administration

<clipSource>http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/F/FIRED_PROSECUTORS?SITE=WIMIL&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT</clipSource>

US Attorney Scandal Cost = $100 Million Due To Inept Appointee

clipped by: BartendingBear
clipper's remarks: Why there is a public defender involved with a case that has a $100,000,000 restitution potential, I can't understand, but we can be sure that this public defender doesn't make near the cash the US Attorney whose mistake he caught does.

Clip Source: www.buzzflash.com

A judge ruled Wednesday that an epic blunder by federal prosecutors in the largest tax prosecution ever means that the treasury can't recoup at least $100 million in restitution.

Telecommunications entrepreneur Walter Anderson pled guilty to tax evasion, but U.S. District Judge Paul Friedman said the binding plea agreement listed the wrong statute.
