Instead of running for office to serve their country and the public good, politicians (53% of Republicans and 33% of Democrats) increasingly have instead (ab)used their offices as a stepping-stone so they can cash in, and it’s no secret we all suffer for it.

In Washington they debate whether former members of Congress should wait one year or two years before they can become registered lobbyists. How about never? Right now hundreds of former Senators and Congressmen are lobbying for big oil and special interests. No wonder gas is at $4 a gallon. …

Just last month there was the latest in a rather long line of reports noting that red light cameras tend to increase the number of accidents because people slam on their brakes to stop in time, leading to rear-ending accidents. Time and time again studies have shown that if cities really wanted to make traffic crossings safer there's a very simple way to do so: increase the length of the yellow light and make sure there's a pause before the cross traffic light turns green

Tragically, it looks like some cities are doing the opposite!

six US cities have been caught decreasing the length of the yellow light below the legal limits in an effort to catch more drivers running red lights and increasing revenue. This is especially disgusting. These cities are actively putting more people in danger of serious injury or death solely for the sake of raising revenue -- while claiming all along that it's for safety purposes.

You don't have to be a big spender, making large payments to questionable companies, to get scrutinized by your bank.

No, every purchase you make, down to that $7 sandwich and soda, gets screened, CBS News correspondent Nancy Cordes reports.

"That transaction, assuming you used a credit card or a debit card, is going to go into the system and it will be monitored with the rest of the transactions that go on in your account," said Mark Moorman, who works at SAS, a software company that helps banks review millions of transactions in search of suspicious activity.

A troubling transaction might trigger a "suspicious activity report." Banks send about 1 million of them to federal investigators every year.

They've always had to report payments of more than $10,000. But since 9/11, banks have started looking harder at small amounts, searching for money laundering, bank fraud and terrorist financing.

A man is being held without bond in the Allen County Lockup after police say they seized more than 6,000 pounds of marijuana from his rented home.

Sheriff Ken Fries says the drugs seized Thursday could have a street value of more than $6 million.

Twenty-nine-year-old Matthew McChesney was arrested after police stopped him for speeding Wednesday. Police say they found more than 10 pounds of marijuana and about $100,000 in cash in his car.

Police obtained a warrant and searched a home rented by McChesney in Harlan early Thursday morning. Harlan is 14 miles northeast of Fort Wayne.

Police say they found about 6,700 pounds of marijuana wrapped in large plastic bricks filling the basement.

Twice I have asked Alan Greenspan what he considers the greatest threat to the U.S. economy, and both times he has answered immediately with a single word: Medicare. He isn't so worried about the trade deficit and the housing crash; he figures market forces will sort them out. KKOB Radio afternoon drive time news anchor Laura MacCallum quit her job last Thursday after the station's news director pulled her stories about alleged vote-buying efforts at the recent Bernalillo County Republican Party delegate nominating conventions.

MacCallum, a 32-year radio and TV news veteran who has worked in Chicago, Denver and Los Angeles, said the station caved to complaints from Congresswoman Heather Wilson's Senate campaign about the stories. Wilson campaign spokeswoman Whitney Cheshire called the station to argue the unfairness of stories alleging that many delegates to the ward conventions were paid by Wilson's and other campaigns to show up and cast their votes for certain delegates.

"If a political campaign can bring pressure on a news department to change how they cover the news, that is a disservice to everyone who listens. We are not there to make everybody happy; we are there to do the news.

Sources have been telling me that doormen at several clubs are clearing $8,000 to $10,000 a night before they share tips. So much cash is pouring in that some doormen are making $400,000 to $500,000 a year, several nightclub executives told me.

"Club employees, usually the size of big league umpires, will go down the line and fish for people who really want to get in. The line guy might get $200, but now everyone in the group is still going to have to pay a $30 to $40 cover charge. Sometimes, the doorman demands more, maybe $50 to $100 per person."

"They wanted $1,000 per person. I said the highest I'd go was $800!" one said.

Then there's bottle service, which means you have to buy a bottle to sit in the VIP section. The usual requirement is one bottle per three patrons. Two-bottle minimums are not uncommon. Bottles at most clubs are going for $350 to $650 a piece.

Top House Republicans were told in recent days that a former employee of their campaign committee may have forged an official audit during the contentious 2006 election cycle and that they should brace for the possibility that an unfolding investigation could uncover financial improprieties stretching back several years, according to GOP sources briefed on the members-only discussions.

Cole said there were “accounting irregularities” at the committee that “may include fraud.”

The National Republican Congressional Committee has retained a forensic auditor to review its accounting for the last several election cycles, the sources said.

“There is a sense that this could be very damaging to the committee,” said a Republican insider close to the GOP leadership.

Miller Brewing Co. will test market three new versions of Miller Lite as the brewer tries to cash in on a growing consumer preference for craft beers.

Miller is announcing today it will test market the Miller Lite Brewers Collection in Minneapolis; Charlotte, N.C.; San Diego and Baltimore beginning in February.

The three new versions of Miller Lite will be a blonde ale, an amber beer and a wheat beer - each with fewer calories and carbs than a typical beer for that style.

Miller said the three new beers will target mainstream drinkers and capitalize on trends that favor light beer, greater variety of beer styles and a willingness to pay more for higher-quality beers.

Light beer makes up roughly one-third of U.S. beer sales volume and is the dominant category in the beer industry.

DaVita and Fresenius-provide most of the kidney dialysis services in the U.S. They want Congress to force kidney patients to stay on private insurance for a longer period of time before they can qualify for Medicare.

Usually, patients need to be 65 years old before they qualify for Medicare. But in 1972, because the high cost of dialysis put care out of reach for all but the wealthiest patients, Congress made the historic decision to extend Medicare coverage to dialysis patients of all ages. But patients who need dialysis have to stay on private insurance for 30 months before they are eligible for Medicare. DaVita and Fresenius want to make patients wait longer-another year-before they can get access to the program.

It's staggering how much money is at stake with this "small" change. It's estimated that dialysis providers like DaVita and Fresenius would cash in a $2 billion windfall over the next decade if they succeed in persuading Congress to make patients wait longer

Al Castro found a lost wallet last week, with no identification inside.

Dr. Thomas McCauley, a Rhode Island eye surgeon in New Orleans for a convention, said he stashed some money he'd won in a spare wallet he carries in case his pocket is picked. He said he figured the cash had been stolen.

But Castro tracked down McCauley and returned the money, initially refusing to take a reward.

McCauley called Castro "the saint of New Orleans," and in recognition of his honesty, McCauley gave him all the money Monday.

Castro is also a student at a local university, in addition to working full time at the downtown hotel and casino to support his wife and 1-year-old child. McCauley said Castro was " getting the wallet back as a stipend for his college."

Police Superintendent Warren Riley, city officials, the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau, Harrah's and the San Francisco-based American Academy of Ophthalmology also honored Castro on Monday.

Our administration is concerned about deficits, and the way they deal with deficits is you want to control spending. And I hope Congress lives up to their words. When they talk about deficits, they can join us in making sure we don't overspend. They can join us and make sure that the appropriations process is focused on those issues that -- those items that are absolutely necessary to the American people.

I'm pleased that members of the Congress are talking about deficits. It means they understand their obligations not to overspend the people's money.
