Atom Bombs Expose Art Forgery

Can nuclear explosions advance art history? A former curator from the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg believes they can. She has developed a new method for dating paintings in collaboration with Russian scientists which, she says, provides “indisputable” evidence of whether a painting was made before or after 1945.

the new patented technology is based on the idea that man-made nuclear explosions in the 1940s and 1950s released isotopes into the environment that do not occur naturally. The tiniest traces of these isotopes, Caesium-137 and Strontium-90, permeated the planet’s soil and plant life, and eventually ended up in all works of art made in the post-war era because natural oils are used as binding agents for paints.

“The number of avant-garde fakes out there today is unbelievable, probably more than the number of genuine works,’’ says Dr Basner,

Any oil painting made in the nuclear era will show traces of Caesium-137 and Strontium-90.

The cult of celebrity and the commercialization of art are not unique to the West. In 19th-century Japan kabuki actors and high-priced geishas were idolized by commoners, and the sale of colorful woodcut prints portraying them became a big, competitive business.

In 1842, fearing an erosion of national moral fiber, the government reacted to the mania for kabuki and for ukiyo-e, the paintings and prints that depicted the fleeting pleasures of life in the entertainment sectors of major cities. Laws were created to limit the extravagance of kabuki theater and to prohibit yakusha-e (actor prints) and bijin-ga (pictures of beautiful women). It was as if the United States had clamped down on Hollywood movies, paparazzi and the tabloids.

Looking at Japanese prints today, you might not realize what a rough-and-tumble commercial world they came out of. Their formal elegance, poetic beauty and technical refinement suggest a more serene, creative environment.

Nicolas Lampert has created a series of art called Meatscapes. I asked Nicolas how he had the idea of Meatscapes, and he said that he came up with the idea by questioning land use. "In
Wisconsin, where I live, the majority of rural land is
utilized for raising cows, either for grazing land, growing food for cattle, or appropriating water for livestock so I started thinking about how to represent this in a graphic form. The result was the meatscapes that brings up this issue in a very subtle way."

I would say this art is definitely imaginative. I'm glad to see there is no obvious message in these, so like Mr. Lampert said, people can come to their own conclusions. That's what art is really about, isn't it?

History Of Psychoactive Mushrooms

The oldest representations of hallucinogenic mushrooms in the world are in The Sahara Desert. They were produced 7000-9000 years ago. The idea that the use of hallucinogens should be a source of inspiration for some forms of prehistoric rock art is not a new one.

What is remarkable about these ethnomycological works, produced 7,000 - 9,000 years ago, is that they could indeed reflect the most ancient human culture as yet documented in which the ritual use of hallucinogenic mushrooms is explicitly represented.

Rock art, the first permanent form of visual communication known to man, the same art which led to the invention of writing, goes back almost to the origins of mankind.

The archeological findings consist in prehistoric paintings which the author personally had the opportunity to observe during two visits to Tassilli in Algeria.

Francisco de Zurbarán was one of the greatest painters of the Golden Age in Spain. He worked primarily for the monastic orders that flourished in Spain during the Counter-Reformation. His best-known paintings are of humble monks and saints dramatically lit against simple dark backgrounds, as in this hauntingly beautiful work Saint Francis of Assisi in His Tomb. As the founder of the Franciscan Order, the ascetic saint had a special resonance in Spain's Monastic communities and with the reform movement of the Catholic Church. Zurbarán's many paintings of the subject are notable for their quiet evocation of monastic solitude and contemplation.

Da Vinci's 'Last Supper' goes online at high resolution

Officials put online an image of the "Last Supper" at 16 billion pixels--1,600 times stronger than the images taken with the typical 10-million pixel digital camera.

The high resolution will allow experts to examine details of the 15th century wall painting that they otherwise could not--including traces of drawings Leonardo put down before painting.

The high-resolution allows viewers to look at details as though they were inches from the art work, in contrast to regular photographs, which become grainy as you zoom in, said curator Alberto Artioli.

Although there appeared to be problems with the web site late Saturday, it was accessible earlier in day.
