Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that's somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country's difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Public Policy Polling:

Six senior doctors have begun legal action to force a new inquest into the
death of Dr David Kelly, the scientist who died days after being exposed as
the source of a controversial BBC story on the Iraq war.

The action is being taken because six doctors are
convinced that the original verdict of suicide is unsafe and should
  be overturned.

Some suspect that Dr Kelly, 59, was murdered shortly after it was revealed
that he was the source of a BBC story which alleged that evidence against
Iraq had been "sexed up" by the Government in order to justify the
  2003 invasion.

The body of Dr Kelly, who was a UN weapons inspector, was found more than six
years ago in woods near his Oxfordshire home after he went out for a walk.
His wrist had been slashed. He also had painkillers in his bloodstream,
although not at a lethal level.

I can remember the first time I heard it and I thought it was real bad. Really, really bad. Like going to hell bad.
Through the years I've used that word a lot to express frustration. Maybe too much, because it kept me from expressing my frustration in a more intelligent and meaningful way. But it felt so good to say it. It released stress in the short term, but until someone came into my life that I really respected I didn't realize how offensive that word could be to others.
I still reserve the right to use it to make a point that I feel cannot be made without it. The incident has heated the annual Krampus debate, with each camp growing increasingly shrill. One side holds that the "Krampus runs," as the random assaults are called, are good clean fun, the sort of local color that makes Salzburg charming and quaint, that Krampuses can be avoided by keeping off the streets between four and eight p.m., and that, in fact, most women enjoy being knocked around a bit by these burly beasts. The other side decries these assaults as blatantly sexist, misogynist exercises that have no place in modern society. "It is the only place in Europe where it is acceptable to beat women in public," a Salzburg women told me.

Clip Source: www.opinionjournal.com

The Krampus is to Salzburg what the bull is to Pamplona, an oversized beast that sends an adrenaline rush of terror through the cobblestone streets of the old town, all in the name of cultural heritage. For a full week during the start of the holiday season, scores of Krampuses stalk the cobbled ways of Salzburg and its surrounding villages.

they stalk young women, fondling them, throwing them over their shoulders and whipping them with wooden switches until their shins and thighs are black and blue. They prowl the streets, wander onto public buses, and storm downtown restaurants where, after assaulting female patrons, they are treated to free schnapps to fuel their further fury. The anonymity provided by the Krampus mask combined with increasing amounts of alcohol consumption is not only feeding the violence but also a debate about this bizarre pagan holdover from a less civilized era.

Tags: krampus, austria, assault, booze

<clipSource>http://www.opinionjournal.com/extra/?id=110006061</clipSource>

"DeepThroat" Emerges in Mike Connell Plane Crash

clipped by: BartendingBear
clipper's remarks: Mike Connell developed websites for George W. Democracy in the workplace allows us to negotiate the conditions of our work.
You may think that we have all of these rights now. We don't. US workers have almost no right to organize. Every 23 minutes in the United States, a worker is either fired or harassed for trying to unionize.
In 1874 unemployed workers were demonstrating in New York City's Tompkins Square Park. Riot police moved in and began beating men, women, and children with billy clubs, leaving hundreds of casualties in their wake. Every year or two, you might go to your boss and ask for a raise or an extra day of vacation, but usually you can't do much about what hours you work, what health benefits you receive or how your retirement benefits are structured. Unions give workers that leverage.

Unions are designed to give workers a voice in decisions that affect their jobs. They allow workers to negotiate with their employers for wages, health benefits, retirement benefits, and good working conditions.
