It wasn't the fury of Thor or an alien portal or the Second Coming of Hey-Zeus. Here you have the explanation of the mysterious giant spiral that happened yesternight in Norway, computer simulation included.

The video shows a rocket running out of fuel and spiraling out of control, which looks exactly like the photos and videos.

Norwegian astronomer Knut Jørgen Røed Ødegaard says it's 99.9% safe to say that it's a rocket out of control, while some newspapers and TV channels are quoting Russian military sources, confirming that this is a failed Bulava missile launched from a nuclear submarine in the White Sea.

The Norwegian defense has confirmed that, even while they have not admitted the failure, the Russian Navy alerted them about the tests prior to the giant spiral appearing in the skies. And if that wasn't enough to convince everyone, here are two images of the missile trails being blown away by the wind, at dawn:

Perhaps the greatest measure of Obama's declining support is that just 50% of voters now say they prefer having him as President to George W. Bush, with 44% saying they'd rather have his predecessor. Given the horrendous approval ratings Bush showed during his final term that's somewhat of a surprise and an indication that voters are increasingly placing the blame on Obama for the country's difficulties instead of giving him space because of the tough situation he inherited. The closeness in the Obama/Bush numbers also has implications for the 2010 elections. Using the Bush card may not be particularly effective for Democrats anymore, which is good news generally for Republicans and especially ones like Rob Portman who are running for office and have close ties to the former President.

Six senior doctors have begun legal action to force a new inquest into the death of Dr David Kelly, the scientist who died days after being exposed as the source of a controversial BBC story on the Iraq war.

The action is being taken because six doctors are convinced that the original verdict of suicide is unsafe and should be overturned.

Some suspect that Dr Kelly, 59, was murdered shortly after it was revealed that he was the source of a BBC story which alleged that evidence against Iraq had been "sexed up" by the Government in order to justify the 2003 invasion.

The body of Dr Kelly, who was a UN weapons inspector, was found more than six years ago in woods near his Oxfordshire home after he went out for a walk. His wrist had been slashed. He also had painkillers in his bloodstream, although not at a lethal level.

In what might be the most ridiculous fooforaw (or argle bargle) since Marge Simpson brought Michelangelo's David to Springfield, an award-winning Texas art teacher has lost her job after a fifth grade field trip to the Dallas Museum of Art ended with parental complaints that kids had seen a nude sculpture. Sydney Mcgee, who has taught art for 28 years, was first reprimanded, and then relieved of her duties at Fisher Elementary School, Friday, after the school board voted not to renew her contract. Given this precedent, maybe local science teachers should avoid taking students to the zoo just in case the animals are... you know?

clipper's remarks: Do we give too much power to that word? I can remember the first time I heard it and I thought it was real bad. Really, really bad. Like going to hell bad.
Through the years I've used that word a lot to express frustration. Maybe too much, because it kept me from expressing my frustration in a more intelligent and meaningful way. But it felt so good to say it. It released stress in the short term, but until someone came into my life that I really respected I didn't realize how offensive that word could be to others.
I still reserve the right to use it to make a point that I feel cannot be made without it. Like the website FML does.

I think it is more acceptable. I’ve heard professors use it while talking to PhD students in a seminar, it’s often every other word in comedy and action movies, and even my mom says it now—although she always smirks after she uses it like she’s gotten away with something.

I recall hearing about an interview with the singer/songwriters on Linkin Park about their first album. It’s notably fuck-free, and it got some attention for it.

Mike Shinoda would then ask Chester to consider what feelings/concepts he was trying to express and together they drew out words with more meaning.

The point of their work wasn’t to eliminate the profanity… but to convey meaning.

An anonymous informant has provided information indicating that an airplane piloted by Republican computer expert Mike Connell was sabotaged before it crashed on December 19, 2008, near Akron, Ohio.

One of Connell's sisters says she believes the family will file a wrongful-death lawsuit against Republican strategist Karl Rove if foul play ever is proven in the plane crash.

Connell, the founder of New Media Communications in Richfield, Ohio, was considered a skilled and experienced pilot. He developed campaign Web sites for a number of Republican clients, including George W. Bush and John McCain.

Connell had been forced to give a deposition in an election-fraud lawsuit on November 3, 2008, the day before the general election. Roughly six weeks later, his plane crashed next to a vacant house in Lake Township, Ohio, as Connell was returning from a business trip to Washington, D.C. The cause of the crash is unknown, and it remains under investigation

Spanish hunter who broke legs in fall into abandoned well shot himself after days of waiting in vain for rescue

Spaniards were today horrified by the death of a hunter from Mallorca who fell 18 metres down an abandoned country well and, after several days enduring the pain of his broken limbs and with no hope of rescue, turned his shotgun on himself.

The corpse of the municipal police officer and keen hunter, who was named as Antonio M, was eventually found after a colleague discovered his car nearby, according to Spanish newspapers.

A search of the area revealed an open, dry well with no wall around it that was hidden by thick vegetation.

Rescuers who went down the well near the town of Calvià said they found the body of the 49-year-old man in a sitting position with a shotgun beside it.

Forensic scientists confirmed that the man had broken his legs in the fall and had sat at the bottom of the well for about three days.

Unions are designed to give workers a voice in decisions that affect their jobs. They allow workers to negotiate with their employers for wages, health benefits, retirement benefits, and good working conditions. In the best circumstances, unions partner with companies - both have an interest in satisfied, happy workers.

Conservatives have slandered unions for more than a hundred years.

Most of us don't think about workplace rights. We assume that because we live in America, we have all the rights we need.

GM May Kill Saab Off If No Buyer Is Found

General Motors Co. said it will phase out its storied Swedish Saab brand if no deal is reached by the end of this month.

GM's board met Tuesday to decide Saab's fate after a group led by Sweden's Koenigsegg Automotive AB dropped out of a deal last week to buy the company. About 4,500 jobs at Saab are at stake.

New potential buyers have emerged, GM said, so the board put off a final decision until the end of December. The automaker said in a statement that no "suitable arrangement" for Saab is found by then, it would "will begin an orderly wind down" of the unit.

The failed Saab sale marks the third time this year that GM couldn't close a deal for an unwanted brand that it is shedding as part of its reorganization.

GM decided to close Saturn after a deal with auto dealer Roger Penske fell through. And the automaker's board decided to keep the European automaker Opel after deciding it was too heavily integrated into the company for GM to let it go.

Yeah, and you guys did such a bang-up job keeping the Taliban out of power, didn't you, Karl?

There's a special stomach-churning quality to watching the people who created one of history's great clusterf--ks telling the people saddled with the job of cleaning it up that they're doing a crummy job.
