In America, the Fourth of July is the day we celebrate the announcement, to the world, that a new kind of governing ideal had come to stay. It celebrates a letter, written primarily by Thomas Jefferson, sent to King George III and the rest of the world telling them a new way of life has proven itself in America, and Americans want to retain that way.

Today, Americans are on the verge of cancelling that letter. Too many today prefer to be managed riff-raff and no longer responsible for themselves. The task of living free is too difficult. We have arrived at a time when Americans are rejecting the contents of that letter, the Declaration of Independence, and want to return to the Old World ways, where the few elite rule the many. In the coming election, we are looking for the return of the elite few who will shape and manage our lives as they see fit.

While other five-year-olds are learning to spell their names and tie up shoelaces, infants at one school are debating life's great mysteries - in philosophy lessons.

Staff say that instead of "thumping each other" in the playground, pupils now challenge each other's ideas when they disagree.

The Philosophy for Children course encourages pupils to grapple with conundrums such as free will, religion and the nature of luck.

"Virtually everyone that came here had some kind of emotional or behavioural difficulty."

Formal lessons in philosophy begin at five

Three-year-olds are introduced to the concept of justification through simple exercises, such as getting them to sit on a "magic carpet" and then asking where they plan to travel on it and why.

Five-year-olds are challenged to consider why music sounds harmonious and people are more likely to shout outside.

You build up all these defenses. You build up a whole armor, for years, so nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life... You give them a piece of you. They didn't ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn't your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like 'maybe we should be just friends' or 'how very perceptive' turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart.
