In Today's Traffic Report: Mini Cooper Fells A Chevy SUV

These pictures were taken by one of the firemen who were called to the scene, with his camera phone. The officials who responded to the accident could not believe that the Mini (and I) sustained so little damage. The other vehicle involved is a Chevy Tahoe. I was driving south on a one-way street and the other driver was driving west, also on a one-way street. The other driver ran a red light (that had been red for a long time) and appeared in the intersection just in front of me as I came through. I didn't even see them. I hit the passenger's side of Tahoe head-on, and the Tahoe rolled. In one of the pictures, you can see the Mini-shaped dent in the vehicle that is on its side. The driver of the Tahoe was unhurt and did get a ticket. She was also insured.

a police car in Austin, Texas, recording a traffic bust. We see the back of Cpl. Thomas O’Connor as he strides forward on the driver side of the sedan he just stopped on South Mopac Expressway. O’Connor speaks hurriedly. He sounds angry as he identifies himself by name and department and finishes the sentence with a demand for a driver’s license and proof of insurance. Five seconds have elapsed since he left the patrol car.

In the next nine seconds he tells the driver,

that he was stopped for 70 in a 65 zone and for having no license plate on the rear of his car. In the next five seconds, O’Connor demands “driver’s license and proof of insurance” two more times.

At 29 seconds, the policeman yanks open the driver’s door and orders, “Step out of the vehicle.”

At 41 seconds, the driver’s feet touch the pavement, and he stands up.

“Get to the back of the vehicle, put your hands on the vehicle.”

Zero to TASER: 48 seconds from the time the officer stepped out of his patrol car.

Looks like Toyota is bringing the 56-mpg iQ microcar to America after all, but it's slapping a Scion badge on it first.

Car magazine called the iQ the best concept of 2007 (.pdf) and "the most significant small car since the original Smart City Coupe back in 1997." Everything about it, from the shape of the dashboard to the placement of the gas tank, was designed to maximize interior room, and the iQ, like the Fiat 500 seems much bigger than it is.

The iQ also would give Toyota/Scion a strong competitor against the Smart ForTwo, which despite mixed reviews has been a hit. More than 18,000 have sold since the car was introduced to America eight months ago. The iQ also would help Toyota/Scion meet tightening fuel economy standards.

no word on what we'd see under the hood of an American iQ, but it's a safe bet it won't be the 55.9-mpg 1.0-liter three-cylinder gas or the 1.4-liter turbodiesel engines available in Europe. More likely is the 1.5-liter gasoline four-banger found in the Yaris.

Though Chrysler executive Lee Iacocca and his designers generally are credited with inventing the minivan in the early 1980s, Earl came up with a remarkably similar concept a quarter-century before them. The L’Universelle, a front-wheel-drive car/truck hybrid with the driver’s compartment in front of the engine, was nearly a foot lower than conventional panel trucks, yet had as much space inside as much larger vehicles.

Unfortunately, the guy on this thing was in a hurry to get on his way, so we only got a little info, but the pictures here speak for themselves. This home-built thingamajig named "The Devil's Joke" was built as a tribute to Vietnam vets and apparently, total insanity. The power train here is a 2.8 liter Ford V6 sporting an Offenhauser intake and a four-barrel carb.

Caterham Superlight R500 is a beautiful car that costs around £37,000. The car is built on the Series 3 chassis. Into this has gone a revised version of the 2.0 liter Duratec engine which has 263 bhp and revs to 8,500 rpm.
Cosmetically, the car gains the aero-wishbones and nose of the CSR, and the rear lights and indicators are freshened with the addition of clear lenses.
As standard the car comes with an H-pattern 6 speeder, but a 6-cog Quaife sequential box is an option, as is launch control. With both the latter fitted, the car can spin its 13-inch anthracites to 60 in under 3 seconds.

When three motorists encountered a driver traveling recklessly on an Ozaukee County highway this week, they all had the same thought: This guy needs to be stopped.

And stop him is exactly what they did, using their vehicles to box him in at a stoplight.

Police say the driver they boxed in was heavily intoxicated, with a blood-alcohol content four times what the state considers evidence of intoxication.

Podewils said Gil-Flores failed two field sobriety tests - a finger-to-nose test and a heel-to-toe walking test - and that a Breathalyzer test found Gil-Flores had a 0.32 blood-alcohol content.
