Well if these pictures of the world's fattest pets are anything to go by, there must be some obese dogs-lovers out there, as well as cat and guinea pig owners.

Sadly experts say overweight dogs are likely to die two years earlier than lean ones and have a much poorer quality of life, so let's hope the diet commences soon.

Chihuahua owners are twice as likely as keepers of other breeds to fork out on fresh meat, vegetables and gravy for their dog's dinner.

They also have a pronounced weakness for costly jewelled collars for their pets, designer doggie-outfits and bespoke beds.

The total bill, including veterinary costs, food, grooming, kennels and insurance, is said to come to £6,081 a year - or £88,691 over the chihuahua's 13-year average lifespan.

Mike Pickard, head of pet insurance at esure, which commissioned the research, said: "Today's household pets are treated more like members of the family and this new attitude is reflected in the amount owners spend on their pet's lifestyle.

"Despite this, many pets remain uninsured. Vets' fees can be very expensive and owners should bear in mind that, ultimately, their pet's health is more important than the latest dog accessories or expensive treats."

He added that 20 per cent of owners faced an even bigger financial challenge because they had more than one dog.

LONDON (Reuters) - England is an irritating and insular country full of overweight, binge-drinking, reality TV addicts, a new guide warns tourists.

But in the new Rough Guide to England, the English are also hailed as a nation of animal-loving, tea-drinking charity donors who love nothing better than forming an orderly queue.

Gone, it seems, is the image of a genteel country awash with Englishmen politely tipping their bowler hats, groping through the London fog and being kinder to pets than kids.

The writers confess to bafflement over the quirky English, concluding that of the 200 countries the guide reviews there is none "so fascinating, beautiful and culturally diverse yet as insular, self-important and irritating as England."

But there are constant contradictions. In a country priding itself on patriotism, they have a Scottish Prime Minister, an Italian football coach and a Greek married to the Queen.
