Berkeley notices a creationist

Parents in the Berkeley Unified School District are horrified to discover that one of their elementary school teachers is a creationist.

Parents said that Martin had listed Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Harry Potter under fiction on the blackboard, which promptly reduced some of the 8-year-olds to tears, after which she made the comment about God. ["the only thing they should believe in was God"]

They said that Martin then said that she didn't believe in evolution or the Big Bang theory either.

Usually it's us atheists portrayed as the disillusioning bastards who shatter small children's happy consoling beliefs (and it's true: nothing warms the shriveled valves and atrophied muscles of my tiny dark heart than to visit department stores at Christmas time and announce to the waiting lines of tots that Santa is dead).

it's about time the sheltered elite enclaves woke up to the fact that the creationist movement is working its tendrils in everywhere.

North Carolina School Considering Creationism

In Brunswick County, North Carolina, the local school board — and apparently the entire board, not just one or two fringe members — is convinced that public schools need to teach creationism alongside evolution. It's difficult to underestimate not just how bad of an idea this is, but just how poorly this reflects on the school board itself — an institution ostensibly responsible for ensuring the good education of children.

First and most obviously, this demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of basic science on the part of board members. This might not be so bad if it weren't for the fact that instead of admitting ignorance and deferring to scientists, board members want to abuse their power by having schools promote their religion.

Second, this reveals a complete ignorance about or perhaps disregard of the law because every court that has ever ruled on the matter has ruled against teaching creationism, no matter what the circumstances.

Should Atheists Vote for the Republican Party?

Why is there a problem for atheists who might be inclined to support the Republican Party? Although it was not inevitable, today Republicans at all levels of government across the country are the primary force behind legislation which would:

Undermine the teaching of evolution and promote the teaching of creationism

Criminalize abortion in as many cases as possible, if not in all cases

Provide funding to religious groups that discriminate on the basis of religion

Provide funding for religious and theological training, as with ministers or priests

Establish prison rehabilitation programs that emphasize fundamentalist Christianity

Have the government endorse the Ten Commandments

Use government power to give a privileged status to Christianity and Christian beliefs

If we used to be monkies we should be able to talk monkey. its like if a french man becomes american he can still talk french, its called logic. also on tv a scientist says crocodiles havnt changed for million of years. if evolution was true they would be able to fly by now or talk or grow fur or invent things. if evolution happens why didnt it make crocodiles better?

i thing you should watch expelled by ben stein. It shows how science is from the devil and good christians are being fired from jobs because atheists know they have the truth. evolution believers know its evil and from the devil, and thats why they are frighetened of christianities real sciense

Professor Richard Dawkins takes a question from the audience regarding the evolutionary origin of religion and how religion could have been beneficial, Evolutionary speaking.

His answer is an interesting one and uses the moth as an example of another way detrimental actions could result as a byproduct of otherwise beneficial behavior . He says that like how the moth flies into candle flames as a byproduct of it's evolution produced guidance system, religion in humans could also be a byproduct of an otherwise beneficial trait, Like trusting and believing what we are told as children by grownups. There is no evolutionary benefit to moths flying into flames and killing themselves, Just like there is no evolutionary benefit to believing in invisible dictators, But there is an evolutionary benefit to the programing that produces those particular behaviours.

This is precisely why the taboo of not discussing one's religion is wrong. This woman's viewpoint needs to be brought out and examined in the light of day. When running for governor of Alaska in 2006, Sarah Palin made it abundantly clear that she supported teaching religious ideology in public schools where they should be teaching science and fact:

"I pushed her on the earth's creation, whether it was really less than 7,000 years old and whether dinosaurs and humans walked the earth at the same time. And she said yes, she'd seen images somewhere of dinosaur fossils with human footprints in them."

Evolving Creationism in the Classroom

If it's September, it's time for creationism in schools. That's how some would like it, anyway.

In Texas, the state school board is one vote short of approving new educational standards in March that allow a curriculum that highlights the "strengths and weaknesses" of evolution. It's all part of a gradual rhetorical shift away from talking about creationism and intelligent design toward casting doubt on evolution, says Joshua Rosenau, spokesperson for the National Center for Science Education in Oakland, Calif.

"They have this idea," he says, "that it's a zero-sum game, so anything you can do to knock evolution down actually promotes creationism without having to say the word."

clipper's remarks: I was aware of several facets of Palin's controversial life but this one struck me as particularly odd. It does fit in very well with her professed denial of evolution. Remember, this woman could be president, given McCain's age. Should we abandon the 21st Century again. It's been a strategy for the past 8 years that has not helped us very much. I, for one, am not ready to plunge us into the past. She has shown by her actions that she is uninterested in advancing rational thought.

None of my pro-Hillary female friends are falling for this obvious GOP pander. To the contrary, McCain's selection of Sarah Palin as his VP is drawing hoots of derision.

Once they learn that Sarah Palin opposes rape and incest exceptions for women seeking abortion, they completely write her off.

One female friend said: "Sarah Palin is to the movement for women's equality what Clarence Thomas is to civil rights. She's an extremist and an enemy to the cause that has been fought on her behalf.... Someone should stand up and say: 'I know Senator Clinton. Senator Clinton is a friend of mine. And Sarah Palin is no Hillary Rodham Clinton.'"

Then she added, with a laugh, "The only thing he is going to let her do in the White House is teach him how to use the internet."

Another said, "It just seems desperate and calculated."

I don't see them siding with Native American's to teach their particular creation myth.

Intelligent Design and the Alaska Governor's Race

The volatile issue of teaching creation science in public schools popped up in the Alaska governor's race this week when Republican Sarah Palin said she thinks creationism should be taught alongside evolution in the state's public classrooms.
Palin was answering a question from the moderator near the conclusion of Wednesday night's televised debate on KAKM Channel 7 when she said, 'Teach both. You know, don't be afraid of information. Healthy debate is so important, and it's so valuable in our schools. I am a proponent of teaching both.'

Asked for her personal views on evolution, Palin said, "I believe we have a creator."

She would not say whether her belief also allowed her to accept the theory of evolution as fact.

"I'm not going to pretend I know how all this came to be," she said.

A Teacher on the Front Line as Faith and Science Clash

In February, the Florida Department of Education modified its standards to explicitly require, for the first time, the state’s public schools to teach evolution, calling it “the organizing principle of life science.”

Evangelical Scientists Refute Gravity With New 'Intelligent Falling' Theory

Subsidized atheism

I marvel at writers who refer to "evolutionists and their precious little theory." After 150 years, the Theory of Evolution is one of the most broadly accepted theories in all of science. How can any so-called educated person characterize the teaching of biological evolution as taxpayer-subsidized atheism?

This antithesis is absurd because, on the one hand, there are so many scientific proofs in favour of evolution which appears to be a reality we can see and which enriches our knowledge of life and being as such.

Now consider the lack of credibility of anyone who calls evolution atheistic. I doubt any sane person of whatever religious persuasion would call the pope an atheist. Does accepting the scientific theory (fact) that the earth travels around the sun and not the other way around make a person an atheist?
