The Holier than Anyone Right has used this to showcase how "special" their darling VP hopeful really is and the point has driven home at the RNC yesterday. That and the supposed non-political issue of McCain's POW status.

Have the voters become so inured to the Republican machine that they are incapable of seeing through their deceptions and lies?

Clip Source: www.opednews.com

Palin and the Christian Persecution Syndrome

The McCain camp explains that the pregnancy does not disqualify an otherwise highly qualified person. But Palin’s utter lack of qualifications and questionable record in office call this explanation into question.

I have been wondering amid all the evidence on Sarah Palin’s lack of qualifications, questionable dealings as governor, and her big-spending, sales-tax raising and debt-ridden mayoral tenure, why in the world the Rovian Republican machine picked her. Yes, I know she was selected to appeal to the hard core Christian dominionists and their somewhat less fanatical ilk.

That, however, does not explain signing off on a pregnant minor daughter in a candidate being sold on family values, abstinence only education and the principle of much of modern right-wing Christianity that parents are absolutely responsible for their children’s walks as Christians.

Tags: republican, hypocrite, abortion

<clipSource>http://www.opednews.com/articles/Palin-and-the-Christian-Pe-by-Bruce-Allen-Morris-080902-253.html</clipSource>

Over the Top

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: When I first saw this piece I was sure it was a parody, possibly from The Onion. And in light of McCain's recent endorsement of Petraeus as one of three influential people in his life, this adds controversy for McCain that he certainly doesn't need. After all, he's perfectly capable of coming up with enough controversy all by himself.

Clip Source: blogs.usatoday.com

Controversy over Petraeus blurb on chaplain's book about Christianity

Gen. Partly they adhere to these archaic beliefs because it gives them biblical authority to feel superior (if they are straight) and backs up their notion of persecution when others speak out against their homophobia.

Clip Source: www.rrstar.com

Christians should speak out freely against homosexuality

Speaking out against same-sex unions can result in a variety of consequences for anyone who dares to do so in the workplace, consequences which can include being required to attend special re-education workshops on “diversity” that teach that people must put values or religious beliefs aside to observe a “higher” value of tolerance.

So conservatives find themselves in a very precarious position regarding the issue of same-sex relationships. The issue is no longer just a political or a social issue; it’s a very personal one.

How do we tell them what we believe the Bible has to say about homosexuality? The same Bible that lumps homosexuality in with a variety of other sins is the same Bible that provides the answer to that question.

As Christians, we have an obligation to others, and that is to be mirrors, mirrors that reflect Christ’s love and also his truth.

Tags: religion, christianity, homosexuality

<clipSource>http://www.rrstar.com/opinions/columnists/x1822517617/Christians-should-speak-out-freely-against-homosexuality</clipSource>

Hands Off Mohammed!!!

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: Fear seems to have censored the publishing of a book about Mohammed. As the author of the piece points out:

"It is condescending to treat Muslims like excitable children who cannot cope with the probing, mocking treatment we hand out to Christianity, Judaism and Buddhism. It is perfectly consistent to protect Muslims from bigotry while challenging the bigotries and absurdities within their holy texts."

Doesn't seem like too much to ask.

Clip Source: scienceblogs.com

An author named Sherry Jones has written a book, called The Jewel of Medina, that will never see the light of day because it novelizes the life and times, with particular focus on the marital details, of the prophet Mohammed.

The Jewel of Medina was bought by Random House and primed to be a best-seller - before a University of Texas teacher saw proofs and declared it "a national security issue".

In a sense, chastity could be treated as an indicator of just how obsessed a religion is with sex. The more a religion emphasizes chastity, the more they are effectively talking about and referencing sexuality. It's not just the religion that's obsessed with sex, but the adherents as well. After all, if the people themselves weren't constantly going "too far" in sexual behavior, religious leaders wouldn't have to constantly keep telling them to stop. You can't have chastity without sex.

We can see similar dynamics in other aspects of Christianity, though they tend to be connected to sex. Christians who are most vociferous in their denunciations of homosexuality seem to be obsessed with gay sex — and too often, it turns out they happen to be gay as well, but just in denial.

Tags: religion, sex, abstinence

<clipSource>http://atheism.about.com/od/liberationatheology/ig/Unapologetics-Posters/Unapologetics--Chastity.htm</clipSource>

Post Rapture Pet Care

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: Brilliant! I am here to offer you pet care service for after the rapture. As an atheist, I will surely still be here on this earth post rapture and would love to look after your pets for a small fee and make sure they are still well taken care of after you and your family have been raptured. You will be able to look down on them from heaven and see them being well cared for by me and living happy, healthy lives. Do not let my atheism scare you! I am a moral and loving pet owner and would never do harm to any animal.

Does Christian Fundamentalism Endanger Our Republic?

The sentence “The most important single element in the history of Western civilization was Christianity” opens the second chapter of Robert Hoyt’s classic textbook Europe in the Middle Ages. Despite its origins as “a religious system hostile to many of the values and entrenched interests of antiquity,” the paragraph continues, Christianity absorbed and transmitted “the best elements of antique civilization” to the medieval period. After such a laudatory opening, a reader would not expect any startling exposés. But this reader, an undergraduate history student, was startled by the content of the very next page.

Tags: religion, fundamentalism

<clipSource>http://hnn.us/articles/52479.html</clipSource>

Care for Another Glass of Kool-Aid?

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: An informative article about the pervasive methods of indoctrination used by the Christian majority.

Clip Source: atheism.about.com

Diversity as a Defense for Christian Supremacism

I've written a number of times about how Christianity is being pushed not just in the Naval Academy, but in fact all the service academies. The most recent point of conflict is the requirement that all midshipmen sit through Christian prayers before their mid-day meal. Because they can't talk or start eating, they are in effect being forced to tacitly participate in a Christian religious ritual.

As might be expected, many Christians simply don't understand why non-Christians (never mind some Christians themselves) are unhappy about this situation. It's as if everyone should be able and willing to appreciate sitting through Christian rituals. There are various attempts to defend the practice, but the worst may be the argument that forcing people to sit through the rituals of the dominant religion is somehow necessary to teach "tolerance" for "diversity."

I am just pointing out the obvious fact that Stein epically fails when he claims that 'Darwinism' is a root cause of Nazism and that Hitler used 'Darwinist' theories as a justification for exterminating millions of people.

Now, let's all sit back and wait for the trolls to start screaming about how I am a Nazi in 3, 2, 1...

Tags: evolution, creationism, religion

<clipSource>http://www.evolvedrational.com/2008/05/darwinism-atheism-hitler-fail.html</clipSource>

Birmingham Builds Bridge to 12th Century

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: In keeping with the image of the regressive South the Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama decided that the best way to fight a rising crime rate was to don biblical costumes and ask his invisible friend for help. Is it any wonder the rest of the nation views the South with scorn and ridicule? I live in the South and I hold that sad view too. But I do like the climate!

Clip Source: bhamweekly.com

Langford sports sackcloth, ashes, Rolex

Friday night more than 1,000 people gathered at Boutwell Auditorium for a prayer rally hosted by Birmingham Mayor Larry Langford.

At the arena entrance, ministers greeted visitors with sackcloths and ashes. The voice of James Earl Jones reading from Revelation boomed through the auditorium speakers. Above the crowd, two wide white banners hung from the ceiling. Each read, “A world without Jesus is a mess waiting to happen - Mayor Larry P. Langford.”

On either side of the stage, two projector screens displayed the Birmingham skyline with the message “A city not forsaken.” On those screens, the event began with an animated film of the last supper, crucifixion and resurrection.

Mayor Langford called the event because of rising crime in Birmingham.
