Bush To Russia: Stop The "Bullying And Intimidation"

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Friday accused Russia of "bullying and intimidation" in its harsh military treatment of Georgia, saying the people in the former Soviet republic have chosen freedom and "we will not cast them aside."

Bush ratcheted up his rhetoric against Moscow as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pursued a diplomatic solution to the week-old crisis.

"Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century," the president said. "Only Russia can decide whether it will now put itself back on the path of responsible nations or continue to pursue a policy that promises only confrontation and isolation.

Sadr to disarm if U.S. withdraws on timetable

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Influential Iraqi Shi'ite cleric Moqtada al-Sadr would dissolve his Mehdi Army militia if the United States started withdrawing troops according to a set timetable, a spokesman said.

U.S. President George W. Bush has refused to set a firm timetable for withdrawing 144,000 American troops from Iraq, but spoke last month of a general "time horizon" for a pullout.

Iraqi negotiators have proposed that U.S. combat troops leave the country by October 2010, although Washington has not yet agreed to it, a senior Iraqi official said on Friday.

If agreed, the timetable would mean the Bush administration effectively adopting a schedule very close to that proposed by Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, who opposed the 2003 U.S.-led invasion of Iraq.

The Campaign for Secularism

We are chagrined that during the current U.S. presidential campaign, secular Americans cannot point to a single candidate who is willing to maintain a clear distinction between religion and public policy, insisting on the strict separation of church and state.

On the GOP side, this is not altogether surprising, given the way in which many Republicans have sought the support of religious fundamentalists in the past. John McCain says that America is a Christian nation. Mike Huckabee, who quit the race after the March 4 primaries, declared that “My faith doesn’t influence my decisions, it drives them.” Of course, the Bush administration has spent almost eight years injecting faith into politics.

Regrettably, all the presidential candidates now seem to support President Bush’s faith-based initiatives, which enable federal funds to support religious charities.

In their never ending quest to control women and prevent them from obtaining health care, they're running to pass legislation that attempts to make an end run around the law by using the pretext of religion to deny a woman access to contraceptives by conflating them with abortion. Luckily, so far their narrow religious tenets have been held in check by more tolerant voices. But make no mistake, these Religious Right activists will not stop their campaign to impose their views on the rest of the nation.

A Parting Gift to the Religious Right

From the people who brought you the Terri Schiavo spectacle, the stem-cell research stalemate and the atrocious waste of tax money on abstinence-only sex education that has been shown not to work, comes a sequel: a proposal to redefine abortion to include some of the most common forms of birth control, and to potentially penalize with funding cuts hundreds of thousands of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers who expect their employees to give women full reproductive care.

“Women would be totally subject to the luck of the draw when they went to get reproductive health care,” says Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America.

The religious right has only six months left in President Bush’s term to continue its war on science and its war on women. The latest sneak attack has been exposed. Congress has a duty to beat it back.

Bush to lift executive ban on offshore drilling

WASHINGTON — In another push to deal with soaring gas prices, President Bush on Monday will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling that his stood since his father was president. But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts as well.

The president plans to officially lift the ban and then explain his actions in a Rose Garden statement, White House press secretary Dana Perino said.

There are two prohibitions on offshore drilling, one imposed by Congress and another by executive order signed by former President Bush in 1990. The current president, trying to ease market tensions and boost supply, called last month for Congress to lift its prohibition before he did so himself.

But Perino said Bush no longer wants to wait. She pinned blame on the leaders of the Democratic Congress, noting that no action has been taken on this issue.

Pelosi Announces Bush Impeachment Possibility

A month ago, Dennis Kucinich presented a 35 article request of impeachment for the American President Bush to the Congress. Although he explained in detail the reasons which the president should resign from his office, none of his colleagues Congressmen paid too much attention to his request. Kucinich probably thought that 35 articles were maybe too many for the Congressmen, so he decided to revisit his request of impeachment once again, but this time with only one point.

Kucinich marked his gratitude to Nancy Pelosi for her proposal to hold a hearing on the Bush impeachment request at the Congress.

- Like everything else in Washington, never say never - Kucinich commented the possibility for an impeachment action on an measure proposed by Pelosi.

Phil Gramm: Recession Is "Mental," America Is "Nation Of Whiners"

In an interview with the Washington Times, McCain's top economic adviser Phil Gramm tells America to suck it up and stop complaining about the economy:

"We have sort of become a nation of whiners," he said. "You just hear this constant whining, complaining about a loss of competitiveness, America in decline" despite a major export boom that is the primary reason that growth continues in the economy, he said.

Democratic National Committee spokesperson Karen Finney is already out with a statement:

What John McCain, George Bush Phil Gramm just don't understand is that the American people aren't whining about the state of the economy, they are suffering under the weight of it -- the weight of eight years of Bush-enomics that John McCain and Phil Gramm have vowed to continue.

Americans Can't Allow McCain to Continue Bush's Failed Policies in the "War on Drugs"

One of the reasons John McCain says he is touring Colombia and Mexico this week is to underscore the importance of the "War on Drugs." Just as McCain wants to continue Bush's failed policies in the "War on Terror," he wants to continue Bush's failed policies in the "War on Drugs" as well.

Of course the central fallacy of the "War on Drugs" is that drug addiction is not essentially a military or law enforcement problem. It is a medical problem.

Today America spends billions of dollars on enforcement, interdiction, eradication and the incarceration of those who sell and use drugs. Yet at the same time there are long waiting lists to get into serious drug rehab programs.

Justice Policy Institute found that investments in drug treatment and education are 10 to 15 times more effective at cutting drug use than the same amount spent on law enforcement aimed at drugs.

Astonishing pusillanimity

This has to be seen to believed. John Conyers asks John Yoo a simple question: "Is there anything the president could not order be done to a suspect?" He can't give a straight answer. So Conyers reduces it to a simple hypothetical: "Could the president order a suspect to be buried alive?" He still can't answer! It's a yes or no question!

Gary Farber has invented a game, "Stump the Yoo". Go ahead, think of some outrage you would propose as a hypothetical to John You, just to see him squirm.

Gary suggests, "Can the president order the arms of a suspect eaten by wolves while still attached?"

How about, "Can the president order a suspect to be impaled for his lunchtime entertainment?"

Or perhaps, "Can the president order a suspect to be repeatedly drowned to the point of suffocation?"

Bush couldn't resist beginning the sober meeting with a quip about a Filipino member of his kitchen staff.

First, I want to tell you how proud I am to be the President of a nation that -- in which there's a lot of Philippine-Americans. They love America and they love their heritage. McCain blasts Obama's support of detainee ruling

PEMBERTON, N.J. - Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain on Friday denounced the U.S. Supreme Court decision granting broader legal rights to the detainees at Guantánamo Bay as "one of the worst ... in history" and blasted Democrat Barack Obama for endorsing it.

White House Reacts Negatively to Ex-Aide’s Book

The White House reacted negatively today to scathing criticisms of President Bush and members of his inner circle that appear in a new memoir written by Scott McClellan, the former White House press secretary who was forced out in 2006 after three tumultuous years.

In excerpts from the book, set to be published next week, Mr. McClellan writes that President Bush “convinces himself to believe what suits his needs at the moment,” and has engaged in “self-deception” to justify his political ends. He calls the decision to invade Iraq a “serious strategic blunder,” and says that the biggest mistake the Bush White House made was “a decision to turn away from candor and honesty when those qualities were most needed.”

But Dana Perino, the current White House press secretary, had harsh words for Mr. McClellan

“Scott, we now know, is disgruntled about his experience at the White House,”

Bush takes veiled jab at Obama during speech in Israel

JERUSALEM — President Bush took the occasion of Israel's 60th anniversary on Thursday to compare his American political opponents to Nazi appeasers and brand them as too willing to negotiate with terrorists, remarks that Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Barack Obama reacted to instantly as an attack upon him.

"We have an obligation to call this what it is — the false comfort of appeasement, which has been repeatedly discredited by history," Bush said in his 23-minute speech to Israel's parliament.

Bush has tried to stay out of the 2008 presidential race, and White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said Thursday that he didn't mean to directly criticize Obama.

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas met on Monday to try to accelerate peace talks that have shown little sign of progress ahead of a visit by U.S. President George W. Bush.

Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said Monday's talks would focus on negotiations on core issues, launched at a U.S.-hosted international conference in Annapolis, Maryland in November, and on an Israeli obligation to halt Jewish settlement expansion.

Rice said she still hoped to seal a statehood deal by the end of this year. Washington wants to see more progress before Bush visits Israel later this month to take part in ceremonies marking its 60th anniversary.

But Israeli-Palestinian talks have been clouded by violence, primarily along the border of the Gaza Strip, and by Israel's expansion of settlements in the West Bank, which Palestinians fear will deny them a viable state.

Building Ties With Catholics A Bush Priority

During a private meeting in the White House living quarters last year with the Roman Catholic bishop of Hong Kong, President Bush expressed passionate appreciation for the church's defense of human life on abortion and other issues.

As recounted by former speechwriter Bill McGurn, who was at the meeting, Bush told Cardinal Joseph Zen Ze-Kiun that "the church is the rock -- it is the only thing that can withstand the wave of secularization, which says you can kill someone else to make your own life more convenient. He said the Catholic Church must never give in on this."
