Alaskan Independence Party: The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel

Palin, it could be argued, following her own logic, thinks so little of America's perfection that she continues to "pal around" with a man--her husband, actually--who only recently terminated his seven-year membership in the Alaskan Independence Party.

AIP's creation was inspired by the rabidly violent anti-Americanism of its founding father Joe Vogler, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American," reads a favorite Vogler quote on AIP's current website, "I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." According to Vogler AIP's central purpose was to drive Alaska's secession from the United States. Alaska, says current Chairwoman Lynette Clark, "should be an independent nation."

Palin's husband Todd remained an AIP party member from 1995 to 2002.

While retaining her Republican registration, she attended the AIP's 1994 convention

she also attended AIP's 2000 Convention

she recorded a video greeting for this year's 2008 convention

My friends, during last night's presidential debate, McCain took That One to task for approving funding for an "overhead projector." Howard Covitz, who used to work at Chicago's Adler Planetarium, prepared this helpful graphic for McCain to show the difference between an overhead projector and a planetarium projector.

Michelle Obama Dismisses Criticisms

Michelle Obama is turning the other cheek to the sharp attacks on her husband, Senator Barack Obama, from Senator John McCain, his wife, Cindy, and his running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin.

In two televised interviews Wednesday night, Mrs. Obama expressed nothing but kindness toward the Republican ticket. She even offered praise for Ms. Palin, saying she provided “an excellent example” of how women can juggle work and family.

“You know, I’m a mother with kids and I’ve had a career and I’ve had to juggle,” Mrs. Obama said on CNN’s “Larry King Live.”

“She’s doing publicly what so many women are doing on their own privately,” she added. “What we’re fighting for is to make sure that all women have the choices that Sarah Palin and I have.”

Instead, she took a decidedly non-partisan approach as she offered reassurances about her husband — and herself — and sought to court voters, especially working-class women and independents, who may be attracted to Ms. Palin.

Why You Shouldn't Vote for Barack Obama

I decided go out, among the flock, to talk to some of my neighbors, co-workers and people in the local Wal-mart and grocery stores, to get some reasons why I shouldn’t vote for this new shiny coin they call Barack Obama.

I found a co-worker of mine who carries the opinion that he is a Muslim pretending to be a Christian. That he hates white people and was sent here by Al Qaeda to infiltrate the terrorist’s agenda into USA soil. They know this because he received an email from a friend from church, or a co-worker who received this information from a reliable source.

I also spoke to an older friend of mine

She said, “He is a Chicago “slickster” who has a big “MTV Cribs” style house.

I did find a lady at the grocery store who told me that “McCain was a prisoner of war and therefore could be trusted with the country”.

'Voodoo priestess' of Blythewood being linked to Georgia political scandal

A "high priestess of voodoo" from Blythewood is being linked to an Atlanta area political scandal, Georgia media outlets are reporting.

Media accounts say that police reports indicate a George Ann Mills of Blythewood was solicited by Cobb Commissioner Annette Kesting to cause her political rival, Woody Thompson, to “catch cancer” or “have a car accident.”

Kesting ran successfully for the post in 2004 against the two-term incumbent. However, Thompson defeated Kesting in a runoff election earlier this year, according to newspaper accounts.

The scandal became public recently because of a police report filed by Mills related to a bounced check.

According to the newspaper, both Georgia and South Carolina authorities are investigating.

North Carolina School Considering Creationism

In Brunswick County, North Carolina, the local school board — and apparently the entire board, not just one or two fringe members — is convinced that public schools need to teach creationism alongside evolution. It's difficult to underestimate not just how bad of an idea this is, but just how poorly this reflects on the school board itself — an institution ostensibly responsible for ensuring the good education of children.

First and most obviously, this demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of basic science on the part of board members. This might not be so bad if it weren't for the fact that instead of admitting ignorance and deferring to scientists, board members want to abuse their power by having schools promote their religion.

Second, this reveals a complete ignorance about or perhaps disregard of the law because every court that has ever ruled on the matter has ruled against teaching creationism, no matter what the circumstances.

Berkeley notices a creationist

Parents in the Berkeley Unified School District are horrified to discover that one of their elementary school teachers is a creationist.

Parents said that Martin had listed Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny and Harry Potter under fiction on the blackboard, which promptly reduced some of the 8-year-olds to tears, after which she made the comment about God. ["the only thing they should believe in was God"]

They said that Martin then said that she didn't believe in evolution or the Big Bang theory either.

Usually it's us atheists portrayed as the disillusioning bastards who shatter small children's happy consoling beliefs (and it's true: nothing warms the shriveled valves and atrophied muscles of my tiny dark heart than to visit department stores at Christmas time and announce to the waiting lines of tots that Santa is dead).

it's about time the sheltered elite enclaves woke up to the fact that the creationist movement is working its tendrils in everywhere.

McCain's Economic Plan

There are several reasons why Senator Obama is enjoying a double-digit lead in the "honest and trustworthy" category (47 percent to 36 percent according the new ABC News/Washington Post poll). First, Senator Obama doesn't, you know, lie to the American people every damn day. Second, Senator Obama didn't vote with the dishonest, corrupt Bush administration 90 percent of the time.

But one of the main reasons why the nation appears to be lining up against Senator McCain's insanely obvious lack of integrity could be because his very serious and mavericky campaign strategy can be described in four simple words:

Blurt Out Random Crap.

"Crap," in this context, is defined as everything from lies to weasel-words to inexplicably weird nonsense. And it seems like Senator McCain does this a lot. So much so that we can only conclude that it's intentional.

California Forcing Atheists to Attend Religious Programs

In Shasta County, California, atheist Barry A. Hazle is suing the state department of corrections because he was given a blatantly unconstitutional choice: go to jail or attend a religious 12-step program as a condition of his parole after a drug possession conviction. Hazle didn't object to participating in some program to deal with addiction, but he wanted a secular program rather than a religious one. Government officials refused and sent him back to jail for what amounts to refusing to go to religious services.

The 12-step program required "acknowledgment of the existence of a supernatural God,....deference to a monotheistic 'higher power,' and participation in prayer," the suit alleges. He was subsequently arrested for violating parole and sent back to prison for four months, the suit alleges.

Courts across the nation have recognized that the 12-step method is religious in nature

Congressional inquiry indicates Charles B. Nemeroff didn’t report income, violated federal research rules

An Emory University psychiatrist who is among the nation’s most influential earned more than $2.8 million in consulting arrangements with drug makers from 2000 to 2007, failed to report at least $1.2 million of that income to his university and violated federal research rules, according to documents provided to congressional investigators.

In one telling example, Nemeroff signed a letter dated July 15, 2004, promising Emory administrators that he would earn less than $10,000 a year from GlaxoSmithKline to comply with federal rules. But on that day, he was at the Four Seasons Resort in Jackson Hole, Wyo., earning $3,000 of what would become $170,000 in income that year from that company — 17 times the figure he had agreed on.

Poll: Obama has 15-point lead over McCain in Pennsylvania

A new Quinnipiac University poll finds Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has opened up a 15-point lead in Pennsylvania over Republican nominee John McCain.

Prior to the debate, Obama was ahead of McCain 49 percent to 43 percent. But the post debate numbers show Obama ahead 54 percent to 39 percent.

“It is difficult to find a modern competitive presidential race that has swing so dramatically, so quickly and so sharply this late in the campaign,” said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “In the last 20 days, Sen. Barack Obama has gone from seven points down to eight points up in Florida, while widening his leads to eight points in Ohio and 15 points in Pennsylvania.”
