Women need secularism

These proverbs from Slovakia show the other side of "family values". This is the name of a whole system of control which can prevent a woman from leaving an abusive marriage and further cement her in place by burdening her with unplanned children. The control imposed by the Vatican disproportionately affects women. That's because the hierarchy of obedience which goes from the pope to the parish priest doesn't stop there: it continues on, from the head of the household down to his wife.

Women must be kept at home and bearing children for the Church. Ordaining them as priests would give them dangerous authority. On 29 May 2008 the Vatican issued a decree "Regarding the crime of attempting sacred ordination of a woman". This is such a grave offence that it incurs automatic excommunication, on a par with heresy, schism, and laying violent hands on the Pope.

clipper's remarks: Christians who cling to the outdated belief that being gay is a sin are following the pre-scientific notions and social customs that were relevant 2000 years ago but are outdated and wrong today. Partly they adhere to these archaic beliefs because it gives them biblical authority to feel superior (if they are straight) and backs up their notion of persecution when others speak out against their homophobia.

Christians should speak out freely against homosexuality

Speaking out against same-sex unions can result in a variety of consequences for anyone who dares to do so in the workplace, consequences which can include being required to attend special re-education workshops on “diversity” that teach that people must put values or religious beliefs aside to observe a “higher” value of tolerance.

So conservatives find themselves in a very precarious position regarding the issue of same-sex relationships. The issue is no longer just a political or a social issue; it’s a very personal one.

How do we tell them what we believe the Bible has to say about homosexuality? The same Bible that lumps homosexuality in with a variety of other sins is the same Bible that provides the answer to that question.

As Christians, we have an obligation to others, and that is to be mirrors, mirrors that reflect Christ’s love and also his truth.

Bush To Russia: Stop The "Bullying And Intimidation"

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Friday accused Russia of "bullying and intimidation" in its harsh military treatment of Georgia, saying the people in the former Soviet republic have chosen freedom and "we will not cast them aside."

Bush ratcheted up his rhetoric against Moscow as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice pursued a diplomatic solution to the week-old crisis.

"Bullying and intimidation are not acceptable ways to conduct foreign policy in the 21st century," the president said. "Only Russia can decide whether it will now put itself back on the path of responsible nations or continue to pursue a policy that promises only confrontation and isolation.

In “Atheism Remix: A Christian Confronts the New Atheism” (Crossway), Mohler engages the central arguments of four contemporary atheists, whom he calls “The Four Horseman of the Atheist Apocalypse:” Oxford University scientist Richard Dawkins, Tufts University philosopher Daniel Dennett, author Sam Harris and pundit Christopher Hitchens.

Mohler, who serves as president of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, chose Dawkins, Dennett, Harris and Hitchens because “they are four figures who have especially come to embody the New Atheist movement.”

The new atheism is marked by:
· An unprecedented new boldness.
· A clear and specific rejection of the Christian God of the Bible.
· An explicit rejection of Jesus Christ.
· Arguments grounded in science.
· A refusal to tolerate even moderate and liberal forms of theism.
· An attack on the toleration of any form of religion.
· A questioning of the right of parents to instill religious beliefs in their children.

The point that Benedict makes of refuting the claim that evolution promotes atheism is of course correct. Although many, particularly in the States, believe otherwise. Unfortunately, the persons that fall into this category are also people that are the least informed on the subject.

Subsidized atheism

I marvel at writers who refer to "evolutionists and their precious little theory." After 150 years, the Theory of Evolution is one of the most broadly accepted theories in all of science. How can any so-called educated person characterize the teaching of biological evolution as taxpayer-subsidized atheism?

This antithesis is absurd because, on the one hand, there are so many scientific proofs in favour of evolution which appears to be a reality we can see and which enriches our knowledge of life and being as such.

Now consider the lack of credibility of anyone who calls evolution atheistic. I doubt any sane person of whatever religious persuasion would call the pope an atheist. Does accepting the scientific theory (fact) that the earth travels around the sun and not the other way around make a person an atheist?

Life of Brian Still Banned

Faith-based censorship is an effective means of social control when a religion dominates a society, but in the West where religions have lost their political status it's just a waste of time. Apparently, though, it's a waste of time that makes at least some believers feel more important and respected because they won't stop. They still want to control the expression of ideas they disapprove of.

Case in point is the town of Aberystwyth where Monty Python's 1979 film Life of Brian is still banned. They weren't the only place to ban the film in a fit of Christian censorship, but they may be the last one left — and the local vicar thinks that's just grand. He seems to believe strongly in censoring material he personally finds blasphemous and offensive.

It's worth noting that Stuart Bell never actually gives an explanation for why the film should be banned. He sort of explains why it offends him, though that explanation is weak since he hasn't seen it.

Theocracy in action---HHS proposes to limit birth control

I'm so angry I can barely type coherently. I have very strong feelings about abortion, but I believe it is possible to respectfully disagree about the ethical issues involved. I have an obstetrics colleague who does not perform abortions, but refers patients needing this service to others. That's the ethical way for a doctor to oppose abortion---don't do it, don't prosteletize, refer out.

All that being said, if you chose a profession that will, by its very nature create an insoluble ethical conundrum, you need to get a new job.

The Religious Right is trying to protect these types of "acts of conscience." Traditional passive resistance in the model of Thoreau and King emphasized the breaking of unjust laws and the acceptance of any punishment that goes with it. The religious right in this country is not content with this model---they would prefer to allow for acts of conscience without consequences.

The Confraternity of Catholic Clergy doesn't like me

An organization of the Catholic leadership has now condemned my actions. This is sad news: it's clear that at least this tier of the Catholic hierarchy is as deranged as the wackaloons flooding my mailbox.

We find the actions of University of Minnesota (Morris) Professor Paul Myers reprehensible, inexcusable, and unconstitutional. His flagrant display of irreverence by profaning a consecrated Host from a Catholic church goes beyond the limit of academic freedom and free speech.

Hmmm. Who is the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy to decide the limits of freedom? Flagrant irreverence towards a cracker ought to be fair game, I should think…and that's all this action was: irreverence. You cannot demand that all members of a pluralist society be reverent towards any random humdrum article that a guy in a dress declares holy.
