It's interesting that present day fundamentalists such as Falwell are still using the same arguments that their 14th century counterparts employed. You'd think that after 600+ years they'd have learned something.

Clip Source: www.history.com

Black Death is “created,” allegedly

According to scholars at the University of Paris, the Black Death is created on this day in 1345, from what they call "a triple conjunction of Saturn, Jupiter and Mars in the 40th degree of Aquarius, occurring on the 20th of March 1345".

Despite what these scholars claimed, it is now known that bubonic plague, the most common ailment known as the Black Death, is caused by the yersinia pestis bacterium.

Devastation on this scale brought out the worst in people. Often, it was not the movement of stars that was blamed for the disease, but the minorities in the community. Witches and gypsies were frequent targets. Jewish people were tortured and burned to death by the thousands for supposedly causing the Black Death. Preachers claimed that the disease was God’s punishment for immorality.

Alternatively, some resorted to useless home cures to try to avoid the disease, bathing in urine or menstrual blood in an attempt to deter it.

Tags: religion, medicine, health, superstition

<clipSource>http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history.do?action=tdihArticleCategory&id=378</clipSource>

Science Ignorance Blessed in Oklahoma

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: Although this legislation has not made it through to law the very idea that it was put forth at all is surprising. If a student's religious beliefs were in conflict with scientific theory, and the student chose to express those beliefs rather than explain the theory in response to an exam question, the student's incorrect response would be deemed satisfactory, according to this bill.

Even simple, factual information such as the age of the earth (4.65 billion years) would be subject to the student's belief, and if the student answered 6,000 years based on his or her religious belief, the school would have to credit it as correct.

Tags: christianity, religion, politics, science, laws

<clipSource>http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/03/some_family.php</clipSource>

Spread the Word

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: Here's your FSM toolkit. With much of present day conservatism based on fear manipulation of the population this study indicates what a little sunshine can do to rank prejudice and bigotry.

Clip Source: www.mercurynews.com

Immigrants incarcerated less frequently

Stereotypes about foreign-born residents' role in crime disproven

Countering a widespread belief, a new report shows California's foreign-born population -- including illegal immigrants -- makes up only a sliver of the state's population of inmates.

The report released Monday by the Public Policy Institute of California also suggests that the foreign-born population, which makes up more than a third of the state's adults, plays a disproportionately smaller role in serious crime.

"Crime, Corrections, and California: What Does Immigration Have to Do with It?" gives one of the clearest glimpses yet into the effect of immigrants and immigration on the state's justice system.

Step two: Make sure you give a gloss of politeness to your post.

Step three: Be sure not to actually read anything on the site

Step four: When you get a response, make sure you point out how puzzled you are that they are not yet totally convinced.

Step five: If asked a direct question, ignore it.

Step six: If they are still not convinced, repeat steps four and five.

Step seven: If anyone calls you up on any of our incoherence, poor reasoning, dishonesty or blatant lies; ignore step two.

We'll have to wait and see if they cling to their Bronze Age myths or join the rest of us who live in a reality based world.

Clip Source: www.sptimes.com

On evolution, case closed

Most Pinellas County School Board members say public school students should be taught about intelligent design, a supernatural explanation for the origins of life, alongside the scientifically grounded theory of evolution. It has been 50 years since scientists first created DNA in a test tube, stitching ordinary chemical ingredients together to make life's most extraordinary molecule. Until recently, however, even the most sophisticated laboratories could make only small snippets of DNA -- an extra gene or two to be inserted into corn plants, for example, to help the plants ward off insects or tolerate drought.

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/AtlLiberal/512/5B1DF9BF-3BC7-4DEC-B806-D67308ED3259.jpg" alt="Scientists at LS9 Inc. in San Carlos, Calif., are using artificial DNA to reprogram E. coli bacteria to produce a cheap alternative fuel. Scientists in Maryland have already built the world's first entirely handcrafted chromosome -- a large looping strand of DNA made from scratch in a laboratory, containing all the instructions a microbe needs to live and reproduce.

n the coming year, they hope to transplant it into a cell, where it is expected to "boot itself up," like software downloaded from the Internet, and cajole the waiting cell to do its bidding.

The cobbling together of life from synthetic DNA, scientists and philosophers agree, will be a watershed event,

Tags: christianity, nature, science, social, religion

<clipSource>http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/16/AR2007121601900.html</clipSource>

Get Your Coathangers Ready

clipped by: AtlLiberal
clipper's remarks: Anyone who believes that this has nothing to do with banning abortion is a fool. The other troubling point is that it, as mentioned in the article, could also affect birth control. Welcome to 1950 folks. Once again religious ideology takes precedent over rational thought. Once again, emotional pleading trumps reasoned, rational discourse.

Clip Source: www.huffingtonpost.com

Colo.
