Named after the powerful Titan deities of Greek mythology, titanium is as strong as steel but nearly half as light. Because it does not react or interfere with the chemistry of the human body, titanium has been used for decades as a "biomaterial," to augment and replace damaged body parts (including bones and joints).

High-profile athletes have brought titanium products international exposure: At the Summer Olympics in Beijing, many athletes sported titanium-infused necklaces, bracelets and sports tape. Major League Baseball players have also given the products high-profile television exposure.

Robot builders seek a little help from sci-fi

Smart thinks those raised expectations were down to the impact of unrealistically human-like robots in movies and books. "People don't really know what they are. C-3PO in Star Wars is very humanlike, intelligent and capable, but real robots are not like that at all."

Instead of just forcing people to alter their expectations, Smart thinks it makes sense to study how people's ideas about robots are influenced by fiction. That knowledge could be used to design robots that make the most of those expectations.

"My real concern is to get people and robots to play together nicely," says Smart.
Engineers might learn from fictional robots in other ways, says Sharkey.

"It's surprising how often people make nervous jokes about robots taking over the world. I don't want to make too much of that, but I think there's something there." So says one roboticist who thinks finding out exactly how fictional robots influence people can help engineers build real ones.

"Most people have never seen a robot before," Smart told New Scientist. "Their experiences – such as they are – all come from movies or literature."

That affects the way people react to real robots, he says.

"People have a theory in their head about how something will behave, and if a robot doesn't fit with that theory, people get nervous," he explains. "It's like standing next to the twitchy guy at the bus stop. He goes against your expectations and you get worried."

For example, not everyone responded well to a robot built by Smart and colleagues that moves around a room composing and then snapping photos of people.

Although archaeologists have used satellite imagery for decades, the technique remained out of reach of most researchers because of the prohibitive costs and specialist skills needed to rectify distortions in raw satellite images caused by the angle of capture. But Google Earth, a free program that can be downloaded from the internet giant’s website, makes high-quality satellite images of much of the world’s surface available to anyone with a broadband connection. Archaeologists are now embracing the technology.

Rival groups of birds behave like football fans, shouting chants at each other and commiserating after a loss, according to a UK researcher.

Green woodhoopoes, a South African bird, live together in gangs of up to 12 and "rival groups often engage in raucous vocal displays, akin to opposing football supporters chanting at one another", says Dr Andy Radford of University of Bristol.

The study appears in Proceedings of the Royal Society, Series B.

Radford found that the birds preen each other (allopreen) after a conflict, particularly when they have just lost or the battle lasted a long time.

Radford suggests birds act like football fans, commiserating with their friends in the pub after their team loses a match.

He believes they do this to reduce stress within the group, a trait more commonly seen in mammals.

"The receipt of allogrooming, the mammalian equivalent of allopreening, is known to decrease an individual's heart rate and tension-related activities," he says.
